You can see the GFS ensembles (these are for Geneva) are strongly indicating a wedge of snow for the Northern Alps at least from the 17th...

They were originally showing that starting first week December but keep pushing it back...
Got 15 minutes? Watch and file under "making the most of what you've got (locally)"...

Recently aired on Sky TV, here's the "online re-edit" of Forged In Steel, featuring Jamie Nicholls. The run through the Hemel Snow Centre is a bit of a giggle...

You can find out more about Jamie here - http://www.jamienichollsuk.com/ and Whitelines have a behind-the-scenes story here.
Will the snow come?

Assuming your children are either young and/or early skiers... they don't want or need large volumes of snow to have fun. Trying to keep young'uns warm and happy when it's -15C and bucketing snow is "challenging" (been there, done that).

As of right now, Niederau's slopes are white and cold (it's not deep but it doesn't need to be) and there are 10 days to go... there's no snow in the current forecast but the weather systems are in flux so that may well change. It is cold enough for them to run the cannons.

No point in getting desperate! You can be sure the locals (tourist office and hoteliers) will help with contingency plans, but they won't be doing that until they're needed.

Worst case scenario, you'll still be in a pretty village with friendly locals near Xmas! 8)
Hi, we have a good number of French-speaking visitors but the majority of our forum users are English-speaking - so you'll get a better response if you can post an English version of your survey?
This note from the Utah Avalanche Center is to the point so we quote it in full...

Utah Avalanche Center wrote:Do Cell Phones Interfere with Beacons?

Yes! Especially in SEARCH mode. Several reports from failed or severely disturbed and delayed rescue action in the last years have shown that electronic equipment can have a very unpredictable and severe influence on avalanche rescue transceivers.

Basic recommendations:

In SEND (transmit) mode keep items like cell phones, radios, iPods, and cameras with wireless capability at least 20cm away from your transceiver. Further is better. If your cell phone is on, it should be in Airplane Mode to minimize interference. Better yet, turn off all electronics and put them in your backpack (except your transceiver, obviously).

In SEARCH mode, all electronics should be at least 50cm away from your transceiver, including electrically heated gloves. Turn off all cell phones.

Also clearly demonstrated in this video (linked from the above article)...
This quick video, courtesy of the Tirol, shows conditions in Ischgl last week before it got cold...

Where's the snow??? Look, there it is... ^^^ 8)
To include a video in your posts, you can now use the Photo/Video button in the post editor.

This is much easier to use, and replaces and combines the old Img and Youtube tags - that sometimes broke when Youtube changed things. It will automagically embed and resize videos hosted on Youtube and Vimeo.

Including Videos from Youtube

Get the address of the Youtube page containing the video you want...
e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DpKexdpFCY
...and paste that straight into your J2Ski post.

Select that text and click the Photo/Video button, which will give you this :-

[i mg]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DpKexdpFCY[/i mg]

You're done. Preview and then Save your Post to and the video will display.

Including Videos from Vimeo

Get the address of the Vimeo page containing the video you want...
e.g. http://vimeo.com/112203158
...and paste that straight into your J2Ski post.

Select that text and click the Photo/Video button, which will give you this :-

[i mg]http://vimeo.com/112203158[/i mg]

You're done.

For the moment, we only support including videos from Youtube and Vimeo but we will add support for other video hosts if there's enough demand.

Here's one we prepared earlier...

Perspective is a UK freeski film, created by Ross Welch. Ross, a semi-professional freestyle skier from the UK was spending the season in Mayrhofen, Austria where he would train and compete in surrounding countries. The season was shaping up to be a good one for Ross with some great competition results and coverage. Unfortunately in the lead up to a major competition, Ross took a fall which would bring the season to an end.

Unsure of when his injury would allow him to ski again, Ross decided to dedicate his time off skis to editing footage filmed by various friends...
