Flumserberg is one hour from Zurich by train. Engelberg is two. Engelberg also has a little bit of a walk to the lift from the train station (There is more then one dialect of English and where I am from we call them train stations!). Also Engelberg tends to be steeper and is not as well connected as Flumserberg. Both should be avoided at all costs on a sunny weekend.

For example, instead of avoiding using cable cars or coming down on them, do it over and over again so that you get used to going on it and actually realising that nothing is going to happen to you. I know what a fear is like, its irrational and you know that you are probably going to be ok, but something makes you panic and tense up and feel sick, and your head tells you that you simply cant do it.
But it is quite simply mind over matter.
To get over my fear of flying, I booked a flight, got on the plane and dealt with it. I have not looked back since. Thats not to say I never felt scared or had bad thoughts on subsequent flights, but I told myself it was all irrational and proved it by getting on (and off the other end) of a plane.
Getting on a chairlift should be a whole lot easier than a plane if you have the fear because if something DID go wrong, the consequences are likely to be far less serious.

Anyway, moving on, and sorry to hijack the thread......

To a certain extent, but If your fear is too high then pushing it too far at the start has the potential to be counter-productive. Tackle it in bite sized chunks.
What to take up the mountain?

Absolutely. Last year I had to come down the Solaise Express chair lift into Val D'Isere and couldn't use my usual look-up-the-mountain technique. It's an extremely long, steep drop into the village and it didn't help that I was alone. I calmed myself down and looked to the clouds, I was petrified but got through it. Mind over matter.

If at all possible avoid going up on a cablecar that you will have to come down on. I think its much scarier to come down on the cablecar/gondola/seatlift as you are looking down into the valley and it makes it appear a lot higher then it actually is.

In practice this might be a bit difficult, but with some forward planning it should be possible. Most resorts that use cable cars to go up will have a not so steep route back down to the valley. This is not the case everywhere, I know some resorts where it will be a toss up as to which is scarier, but I know others where skiing down would be very enjoyable where the gondola could be a little bit sketchy if you are nervous of heights.
Tony_H wrote:Hypnotism is all about you regaining control and slowing your breathing down. All of which you can do yourself. I overcame my fear of flying by telling myself to stop being such a big girls blouse, dealing with slowing the breathing down, and accepting that nothing is likely to actually kill me.

Bang on, I once paid a hypnotist to help me get over a problem I was having with fear of something in a particular sport. It wasn't so much the hypnotism itself that helped, but more the ability to calm down while scared. A few years later I went back to Uni and one of our sports Psychology courses dealt with Hypnosis to control anxiety when trying to do a sport. In essence all Hypnotism is is creating a cue to calm you down when you are feeling anxious. Reasoning with yourself and thinking successful thoughts can go a long way to achieving this.

Also as someone has already said, only push yourself out of your comfort zone in small steps. This will allow you to progress and get used to steeper/higher sections over a period of time without ever freaking yourself out.
