1: St Moritz

That's an interesting one. Went to St. Moritz on the 'peasants'' day-trip from Livigno, and while it was very nice for a day, i never got the feeling that I would want to spend a week there. However (and this may interest you, Tony), I have read recently that it's a bit of a hidden gem as far as off-piste opportunities go. Apparently the 'toffs' don't go in for the old off-piste in a big way, so fresh snow can remain un-tracked for 'yonks', while in the more obvious off-piste 'Meccas' it can be tracked out the same day.

so.

Gaz, I always thought st Moritz was out of my league, but we found a cost effective way to do it and everyone who went on the trip would agree it was fantastic skiing.
The slopes were empty as the toffs all want to shop or eat during the day. Grooming is outstandingly good. And there's a great choice of slopes on 2 mountains. I have not idea why you'd think it wouldn't be good for a week when you went on a day trip, especially coming from livigno which I've always thought wouldn't be enough for a week.

I can honestly say the skiing here was top notch, and yes there's plenty of off piste to go at as well although we didn't actually do much. Definitely more off piste over on corvatsch. It's a wonderful place to ski, iconic scenery with the frozen lake down below, and high altitude so guaranteed snow.

I'd go back at the drop of a hat, for the right price of course

You were right about Livigno. We skied it out by the end of the week and the day trip to St. Moritz helped keep it interesting. We spent our day on the Corviglia; the standard of piste-grooming was second to none and seemed to make everyone (including ourselves :D ) look like good skiers.

While the skiing there was excellent, it was the general ambience of St. Moritz that made me feel like I wouldn't want to spend more than a day there.I tried to leave the 'chip on my shoulder' behind in Livigno but still found a pervading air of middle-aged stuffiness. I suppose I was happier among my own kind; The 'peasants'

Nice one!
OK. Just to set the ball rolling, here's my 'two- pennorth' on your List 2.

Saalbach: interests me, but never managed to find it for the 'right' money.

Tignes: Do it!

Meribel: can't put my finger on why 3V has never appealed. Might have a better idea when I return from VT in April.

Morzine: been to PdS once. Spent most of the time in Chatel, Avoriaz and over the Swiss border. A brilliant ski-area Night-life can be a bit erm... 'French' though  .

Zermatt: Would love to!

Wengen: as above (but not as much as Zermatt.)

Soll/Skiwelt: Big area, nothing too challenging. Would go back with family like a shot. Great value, so would also do it as a cheaper, second trip.

Ski Amade: would do it as a DIY job. Cheap flights to Salzburg and hire a car, which I think would be needed to get around. Otherwise, stay in Gastein, which I think is part of the area.

Obergurgl: would rather go to Solden (next door) or Serfaus.

I'll be the first to admit that my negative thoughts on Meribel and Obergurgl are, to some extent, pre-conceived. I look forward to people who have had great times there 'putting me right'.

Wow! Big response to this one. Not exactly set the ball rolling, Have I?

1=: St. Anton. Loved the drunken carnage in 'Happy Valley!'

1=: Gressoney-la- Trinite. In many ways the 'polar opposite' to St. Anton, but no less enjoyable.

3: Tignes. Epic ski area. Only scratched the surface in December. Can't wait to go back.
A quick heads-up.

Some of you may already be aware of this site:

http://www.sportpursuit.com/sales

Looks like they have some decent gear at reasonable prices. I'm already sorted but the Bolle goggles and helmets look good value. You have to register your e-mail address and create a password, (I already have) to gain access to the site. They then send you e-mails ( I get about 2 a week) as and when the new offers come along. Don't 'flame' me if you object to receiving the odd promotional e-mail: just don't bother looking on the site. -)
