When you have your new ski kit at home, just tell your regular household insurer. Most will just add your stuff to the existing policy. When you are away skiing, you'll need a travel insurance package that will cover you and your kit.

briangreen, in your situation I think I would shop around for a new contents insurer. I've insured 5 specified pairs of skis on a household contents policy for no excess. As for burglars, I expect most will know that each pair of skis has a unique number. Quite hard to move on, so not very worthwhile once word gets around )
