We only had about 2 inches of snow, but our steep, narrow lane is untreated and had a base layer of ice and we did not see how we could get out.
Brainwave. Chains.
We've driven to the Alps 5 times and never used them - and of course never practised either.
But, we got there and once you've done the 1st one the 2nd is easy.
Top tip.
They are not easy to put on. Don't do what we did and learn how to do it when you need them.
It wasn't fun working it out at home. don't fancy it on a freezing mountain road.
Merry Christmas.

We used our snow chains today - in Gloucestershire!

Well done Dids, for managing to get the snow chains on.
A few years ago we were on a minibus heading for Moutiers and there was masses of snow, and the driver couldn't get the snow chains on and one of the other passengers and I had to help her. They are very difficult to get on. I think it might be easier to lay them on the snow and then drive on to them.
Where were you going in such a hurry?

:DNice one
Another little tip i have found very worthwhile, when taking them off remember to make sure all the connections are at the top of the wheel so when unclipped the chains don't drop down and get all caught up in the axlesagain as Ally says laying them out and then driving onto them can be better than fiddling about behind the wheel itself.
Just amazing that the first time you have had to use them was in Blighty and not the Alps.
Marry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all.
P.s I read on the long range forecasts that the end of Jan and most of Feb will be very cold and snowy here in the UK so lots more excuses to put the chains on :D
