Where to ski in march?

I have just fractured my hand so cant go skiing tomorrow:( good news is I may be able to go mid march. Anyone know the best place for snow in march?

Don't know about the best, but can definitely recommend Verbier, as long as it does not have to be ski-in ski-out resort. Some good apres-ski too :)

I'm really sorry to hear about your hand :cry:

How disappointing for you. It might be a good idea to wait until March, see where the best snow is, and book a last minute cheap deal. Other than than that, I suppose any high, possibly glacial resort would do - like Val Thorens, Saas Fee, Tignes etc.

I went ski-ing at the end of March once, at Easter, in La Rosiere, and there was masses of snow (more like late January the ski instructors said). I'd say it's impossible to predict which resort will have the best snow late in the season.

Best of luck with your hand - I hope it heals well and you get a substitute holiday in March :D

Hi Ally: You mention La Rosiere; I've been thinking of that resort for a second trip this season (went to Niederau early Jan). Is that the place where you can ski across from France to Italy (or the other way round..)? What was your experience of it ? Thanks for any info.

Paulaski: re your original question, I ski'd in Niederau late March last year and although the lower slopes in the village were all gone, those at the top of the gondola were pretty decent, and we had snow overnight for a few nights too. Hope your hand improves in time.

Late March, if you want to play it safe and sensible, means going high up. Pick somewhere with slopes above at least 1500m, better still 1800m, and with slopes going high above 2000m to go at.
If you pick somewhere with a glacier, you'll defo get some skiing even if its tropical temps.
Do some research and pick a resort with high altitude slopes, then you won't be disappointed.
If you're a good skier, look at Verbier or St Anton or Zermatt for example. If your intermediate and like to cruise, how about Cervinia.
I'd also suggest Serre Chevalier as I've been there late season with excellent snow. Obergurgl is also high and gets lots of good snow all season long usually.
Maybe Val d'Isere and Tignes float your boat if you're a Francofile.
I would also suggest the highly recommended Aosta Valley and in particular Champoluc and Gressoney as they are getting lots of really good reviews, and a little off the beaten track with a good sized area to go at.

One of my friends is off to Borovets for a quick week at the beginning of march and although the snowfall is looking doubtful at the minute, its supposed to bucket down at the beginning of March so I will let you know how it is when he gets back (y)

Hi Billip,
I'll send you a pm regarding La Rosiere. I wouldn't really consider it suitable for late season ski-ing because it gets a lot of sun and the lower slopes go slushy, which is fine if you can get out of the sun and over to La Thuile in Italy, but not so good if you can't. We were just very lucky with the Easter snowfall that year.

So sorry about your hand, hope it's better soon.
I went to Montgenevre last year late March/early April, at 1860m its one of the highest resorts so good for late season snow. We arrived in a snowstorm and had good snow all week although it did get a little slushy on the south facing slopes in the afternoons - but it was warm and sunny. Its meant to be good for intermediate skiiers but a bit limited for advanced skiiers although you can get to the more extensive slopes of the Milky Way (Sestriere,Sauze d'Oulx and Sansicario) just down the road.

Head a few miles down the road to Serre Che. Its a lot better and bigger than Montg.

Hold your nerve, keep an eye on the cams, snow reports and forecasts and pick from there; late March is a wonderful time to go skiing, longer days and reasonably quiet in most places.

As for Serre Che, Tony, good choice BUT the ancient lift system is in desperate need of some investment. Too many old boneshaker chairs that are slow and frequently stop altogether.

I've never had a problem getting about the area. In fact, the worst old 3 man chair from Villeneuve mid station can now be avoided by the shiny new high speed chair which whisks you up to the top of Cucumelle, not that I've tried it this season yet.
But it does have older lifts compared to the likes of Mayrhofen, Verbier, St Moritz et al
