3 year old skis the Mountain backwards!

Ian, agreed, We think their brill, Mrs S and myself watch them in the resort they have no fear and it just comes so natural to them. Both our kids are now 24 and 21 and pretty good skiers now but they did'nt start until their teens.

We started our little one at three y.o she is now nine so you can imagine what she is now like, give her a couple more years and I'll be struggling to keep up.

Thats great Ian, i bet your Daughters skiing is the muts. It is our regret that we did not start skiing many, many years ago. We would have loved to have started our boys off skiing at that age. For our benefit, it would have been nice to ski without the aches and pains that age brings. Those were the days - when your legs worked :lol:

Is it really as expensive as I believe it is to take a kid skiing though? Their lessons are no cheaper are they? Lift passes free until age 5 in Austria though so I guess that makes up a bit. They grow out of clothes really fast too. New outfit every year...

This year taking a "Dustbin lid " skiing ...... Lift pass Euro158, Lessons Euro103, Ski & boot hire Euro37 and a snowboard lesson and board hire Euro55 Total ....Euro353

And thats with out new ski suit, new snow boots and the chalet costs .... Anybody wanna a kid :wink:

and it gets worse as they get older....
Lift pass prices increase as they don't get child prices, they eat more & drink more!

On the plus side, taking your kids skiing is great fun and mine have always appreciated going.

If you're lucky you can get good deals.
For instance - Samoens Christmas and Easter- normally do a kids under 12 free everything, hire, accommodation, passes & lessonswith an adult buying same product. So that's a great saving.

My two at 10 and 8 are not quite up to skiing the mountain backwards but having started young, they had no problem with the demanding reds and some blacks in St Anton this year. They are not too far below my level already and I probably have only 1 or 2 more years before they consider it boring to ski with their "auld fella".

However, it does seem to me that kids will go on ski trips with you regardless of age (especially if you are paying) unlike sun holidays where they lose interest at about 16.

As regards clothes, the secret is to get to know lots of other parents who ski and pass around the ski gear as the kids get older - we have been really lucky in having gear passed on to us and are happy to pass it on again when ours grow out of it. This, and Lidl/Aldi, help make the whole thing affordable. Also you have to look carefully at the various deals available from Tour Operators and in resort. Many offer free places for kids and free kit in resort if parents renting, etc. These deals vary enormously from resort to resort but it is important to check these things out. Even the Swiss railways give free travel to U16s travelling with parents!

Bottom line is that it absolutely lovely to bring your kids skiing and a joy to pass on your love of the sport.

She will end up an expert in both skiing and Boarding at this rate. I have never had the urge to board, yet both my boys have snowboarded, although they are self taught.
