Filthy dog owners

Ok, so here i am in belle Plagne right now and i am disgusted by the locals that bring there dogs to resort.

We have accomadation right on the piste and each morning sit and watch them walk and allow their animals to s**t on the piste. They make no effort to clear up as we all now see as normal in the uk.

all along the edges and sometimes in the middle there are patches of yellow snow and lumps of brown. Surely they should be given a designated area or simply not bring their filthy beasts!!!!

Ooh that's not nice.

Apart from the fact that it's unpleasant, it's a health hazard. Imagine falling in the 'wrong' place and getting a nice fresh one all over your snazzy sallos and jacket. You can go blind after coming into contact with dog do doos y'know

Neither do I, but I know what that means, because I've heard it before, here in Wales, especially with adults talking to kids. I don't know what the official translation is, but it means something like 'that's disgusting/dirty!'.

And, back on topic, I like seeing dogs in French ski resorts - but I haven't seen any on the piste. In fact, I'd sort of assumed they weren't allowed, both because of the hygiene aspect and for safety reasons (I find it hard enough to ski at the best of times without trying to dodge a dog running about at top speed!).

Ally

I agree, we have just been on our usual ski trip to Megeve and the dogs poop everywhere. Plus, a dog stood on the bench i was sitting on in a Creparie restaurant when my pancake came and the owner made no attempt to pull the dog off. . .so i gently pushed the dog away. . . A dog in a restaurant ????? . . ..Begging, , ,dam cheek !

Re:Filthy french dog owners

I saw a lot of dog owners taking their dogs for a sh1t on the ski slope at Place Caron in Val Thorens. There were small children sledging and playing in the snow in this area, which runs through the centre of the resort. Other highlights of my stay were the sight of condoms left to dry on balconies, and piles of human excrement and vomit outside the doors to apartment blocks. This was in 2005, perhaps the resort attracts a better class of tourist these days, you have to hope so.

Other highlights of my stay were the sight of condoms left to dry on balconies, and piles of human excrement and vomit outside the doors to apartment blocks. Quote from Bandit>

This sounds like a typical Geordie night out! Recently I saw so much vomit int the town, but diarrhoa cascading down the steps really turned my stomach. I must be getting old!

On the plus side the pistes in Austria have always been clean and very rarely do I see any dogs on them. I totally agree that the dogs should not be allowed up there from both a hygiene and safety point of view. It would put me off any resort if dogs were a problem.

Re:Filthy french dog owners

At least during the season, the cr*p will freeze and be buried under new snowfalls. However, I have often wondered what the slopes around the villages must be like when the snow melts and all the detritus is left behind - it doesn't really bear thinking about it too long!!!

Re:Filthy french dog owners

Reading this you'd wonder why anyone ever goes skiing in France and why this has never been raised before.

I know that they don't care about cleaning up after their dogs like we allegedly do (there's some pretty irresponsible people over here too) but it's not a case of dodging-the-do really.

I personally have been lucky and haven't seen it on the slopes. It might be because I've not stayed slopeside except in Les Saisies where the other people were mostly Belgian, so presumably didn't bring dogs because of the distance.
Don't let it put you off altogether Emma.

I can't believe you can get accommodation that allows dogs to be honest.... Perhaps if it belongs to you you can do what you like.

From what I have observed, the French are pretty careful with their money, so I suppose they see it as free fertiliser for the summer grass, and at least it's biodegradable - unlike the plastic bags, gloves, ski poles etc. that skiers drop all over the place

Ally

Dog Faeces carry a risk, particularly to children.

Toxocariasis

Toxocariasis is an infection of the round worm Toxocara canis5. It is a zoonotic6 disease that is spread via unwashed vegetables and dog faeces. Young children in particular are at risk due to their weaker immune systems and because they are more likely to expose themselves by ingesting the eggs. A puppy can pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, and they are a major source of environmental contamination.

Each T. canis female can lay up to 700 eggs a day. These are passed out when the dog defecates and can survive for up to three years in soil. After two to three weeks of warm weather the eggs develop into an embryo state, containing larva - this is when they become infective to dogs and people.

The larvae try to migrate through the human body as they would in a dog's, but the human body treats them as foreign material, which causes a reaction and tissue damage.

There are two types of toxocariasis: visceral larva migrans (VLM) and ocular larva migrans (OLM).

In VLM, the larvae reach the liver, causing inflammation and symptoms such as abdominal pain and pyrexia. Most people recover spontaneously.

OLM occurs when a migrating larva reaches the eye. It causes a granuloma to form on the retina, causing significant visual impairment and in severe cases even blindness.

Re:Filthy french dog owners

Just got back from La Thuile - on Saturday, I saw some guy coming down a black run, being dragged along by a sprinting Golden Retriever on a lead. They both then got straight onto the chairlift, the dog sat there quite happily, and did the same thing again.

Didn't see the dog sh1t anywhere, although I guess it probably will have had to at some point...

Normally if you see a dog on the mountain, it's a search, and rescue dog. Not all the handlers may wear uniform.

Do you know that didn't even occur to me. I've seen a number of dogs pulling skiers down the mountains in Austria. They seem really well behaved, surprisingly focused and their owners are clearly very competent skiers. That makes a lot of sense.

Re:Filthy french dog owners

There used to be a very large black hairy dog in Les Arcs that had a wonderful time! It's human was a lifty and it would go up the chair with him and spend all day fooling around in the snow before thundering down the piste when it's human finished work.
When bored it would bark at skiers hoping to have snowballs thrown to chase.

Trencher, it is now an alternative sport. Not too many, but in general, they aren't rescue dogs, just dogs and ski-owners having fun. There is a regular in Niederau. Mostly flats and downhills, but I have seen the dog pul the ski-owner up the length of the draglift. My OH and I are dog trainers, and we don't see an issue.
The search and rescue dogs are terrific to see in action.
