Arrgghh Rain!

I'm going to Soll in 6 sleeps and the forecast says heavy rain next week!

Their website indicates snow tomorrow with a temp at -3. At the present time they have 60 cms uptop and 30cms on the lower slopes. I think you should be alright unless there is a drastic change in the weather front. :wink:

Buy some warm temp wax, and have very sharp edges for the ice in the mornings. :cry:

Just returned from skiing in the pouring rain.. and also a couple of days ago.. a strange experience never done it before but strangely enjoyable...better than skiing on ice, not as good as proper snow of course..Snowb4ndit was having trouble the other day on her fat skis as the slush is heavy and her skis were like shovels, my skinny piste skis were fine and didnt collect much slush, very sticky and used wax for wet snow although a guy in a ski shop said sometimes its best NOT to wax when its that wet, though he didnt say why, main problems are with goggles steaming up and hitting puddles at speed!!
(not recommended.. instant ejection from bindings!) if it freezes hard tonight I will need skates tomorrow!!
Basically we still had a good ski and other extreme conditions can be a lot worse ie. high wind,fog,blizzard etc.

It was raining on the lower slopes in Selva & Corvara yesterday - I think my Jacket's almost dried out.

Just as well looking a the forecast for our next stop - Zell am See

I like skiing on rained-on snow, it is almost like fresh, very grippable, and when the temp falls, it forms a great natural base for fresh snow.
Re wax, I am still using my old stock, and so silver wax was the one. The key thing is to apply the wax randomly, ~ scrub the skis base. Reason? the main issue with skiing on wet snow isn't friction, rather it is suction. By breaking up the base wax, you reduce the suction effect. The bad news is that wax for wet conditions is very soft, and you need to apply every run!

I'm not flashy enough to have my own skis yet (maybe in a couple of years) so wax won't be an issue for me. My main worry was the rain would wash all the snow away. Doesn't sound like this will happen.

We had two days of rain last week in Megeve (horrible!)
and apparently Geneva had more snow over Xmas than Megeve, so the local taxi driver told us on the way back to the airport !

Had a text from my sister this morning, she's in Les Arcs - said they had 6 inches of new snow last night.

....and the moral of this thread is....

book a high resort to be safe, or at least somewhere with high altitude skiing.

My mates in Saalback, he says the snow is terrible out there, but it beats being in the office. And Saalbach is higher than the likes of Niederau so it must be dreadful down there.

Sounds like anything above about 1800m is getting snow. I had a lot of rain in Verbier 2 years ago but once you got up above 1600 it turned to deep deep snow.

Go high up if you want to avoid the rain.

Rain is not so bad....although fresh snow is always better.

If you are going to a high resort then you are not always save of rain. I can remember a number of times with rain up to 3000 meters!! The fohn is the problem!!

And for those of you who are going next week, don't worry enough snow on the ground and will not wash away from one day to the other!

I have lost more ski days through wind in high resorts than lack of decent snow in lower resorts.

Tony some folk have no staying power! As a mature group of competent skiers we probably burnt the candle at both ends to much last year in Soll but what fun we had hence us going back this year!

18mm of rain in Niederau today but will be in the minus degrees by saturday night so hopefully, it should not to do much to getting rid of the snow...

Bucketing with rain in Saalbach according to my mate whos out there. Slopes are knackered by mid morning. How disappointing is that for early Jan?

Not good in Morzine...All's looking very green!

Skiing in Avoriaz today was ok higher up, but seeing a boarder on the lower slopes on his tummy, face down the mountain doing breast stroke, sums it up really :-(

Oh no, thats not good at all. Mind you, its not as if you haven't had any fun yet luckily. Things will change again soon.

Hmmm I arrive in Les Gets tomorrow so if you could get busy and start barrowing in some snow for me that would be awesome - nothing forecast for next 7 days and temps are double figures.

Avoriaz here we come.

Okay....got back yesterday after a week in Les Gets. Hard Packed and lots of ice but perfectly skiable even for a comparative beginner like myself.....not saying it was the best skiing ever but actually not as bad as other reports had suggested. Thursday was spent in Avotiaz which was much better and had some great snow - okay so a white out which was tricky but cleared up after lunch for a great afternoons skiing. gonna get a long weekend sorted for early March - not going to book until late though do we get guaranteed snow.
