Skiing with a 1-year old

I'm looking for some tips really. We've been skiing many times but not for a couple of years. We're off to Valloire in Feb with our one year old daughter (obviously she's coming for the first time)

I wondered if anyone had done this and had any tips for us or pitfalls to avoid. We are part of a large group of both skiers and non skiers and people have said they will help with looking after her so we can both have a chance to ski.
Kitty (our daughter) is walking if that makes any difference

Skiing with a 1-year old

Take as many nappies as you can as they are very expensive in France, when we first took our daughter she was fourteen months and spent about three hours a day in a creche which I have always found very good in France.
You might want to check out with the TO re the safety of your accommodation re steep stairs etc, baby food in France seems full of sugar and "E" numbers but as you can imagine the kids woof it down, trying to keep sun glasses on was a problem as I remember. Apart from that no real problems.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

I haven't been to Valloire for about 15 years, but I seem to remember that it is a proper working town as opposed to just being a ski resort, so it has plenty of shops, market, church, etc. for anyone to walk round with little one. There is a restaurant at the top of the gondola where you could meet for lunch.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

Got back from the 3 vallees 3 days ago ,there were 2 babies on the trip and one of them ,Sam was his name , a screaming 18 month old baby all the way on the flight and all the way on the 3 hour bus drive to la tania and then all the way back and then all the way back on the flight. It was our worst trip ever! The other baby didn't make a sound ,so good luck. :)

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

I have no kids but one suggestion, linked to ATOO's point - take a small bottle on the flights with you for the little 'un to drink on take off and landing. If she'll take it and keep swallowing it should help reduce any pain in her ears from the sudden altitude.

Check out customs rules on liquids. For adults, no single item over 100ml, but there may be special rules for small babies bottles.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

Sucking on a dummy or even a bottle with water always helped when our child was a baby. Don't want to inconvenience other travelers such as ATOO with your child screaming in pain do you, tut tut... Also agree with Ian, keeping their eyes shielded from the Sun is important. Anyway, good luck, hope you have a great trip.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

yeah i did feel sorry for the baby for the first hour but then couldn't think why would you even bother taking such a small thing to the alps with you, every where is covered in snow and ice ,every one one fell over at least once when not on the slopes ,it was -13 on 2 of the days and the worst thing was it was freezing the head on the murphy's with in 5 minutes. :D

I wouldn't normally comment, and I apologise for not really answering to OP's question; but this is a missive bugbear of mine, and the above comment is typical of some people's attitude.

If the child is in pain as you suggest, don't take it on the plane in the first place!

It's funny how many parents are completely oblivious/ignorant to just how selfish it is to make everyone else sit through an entire flight they've paid good money for, listing to a screaming child.

I personally think there should be an age restriction on travelling infants.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

Sorry, that is total rubbish, What is that age cap, 2,3,4 ??? All children develop at a different age. Maybe they should teach Mothers in antenatal classes to understand they cant have a holiday abroad for until there child is 4, if you then have another child you have to wait even longer. I have always been fortunate, our children have never suffered, but if i listened to people like you we wouldn't have had some great holidays over the past 8 years.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

I am childless and have little patience with people who wish to inflict their children on me.

However in the case of a baby on a plane I have sympathy. I don't think people should be banned from crying because babies cry. We've all been babies and all been given allowances.

My bugbear is with children who misbehave to the amusement of their parents who seem to think I should find it as 'cute' as they do. The word parent is a verb as well as a noun. Babies are a minor irritation compared to the children who don't understand the word no and that not everywhere they are taken is their personal kingdom.

Having said this there are also plenty of well behaved children on flights. It's just that you don't notice them and the annoying families stand out so much more.

I would pay more to be guaranteed a child free cabin. But not because of crying. Because of brats.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

Now Mekka I can agree with that. I am not saying ours are Angels but I am all for them behaving themselves, especially when there are other people around. In fact I find it embarrassing when ours make a noise or disturb others.

Re:Skiing with a 1-year old

It's amazing how many people believe they can live their lives segregated from babies, children, teenagers and the elderly. Ha, ha.

Have a good trip. Our youngest is two, I would say the only thing to bear in mind is how much extra effort on top of normal parenting the cold brings - getting them in and out of clothing all the time - and getting them to bed a lot earlier than normal.

Make sure you have spare mitts, and fit them well.
