Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

Hi all as this is the first time i have booked my ski holiday so early i have really started watching the snow conditions. But for some reason none of the bulgarian resorts are reporting any snow at all yet surrounding countries have several inches .

As i said normally i wait till early in the year see wheres best and off we go . Have been to bansko in late feb and was no problem . We go on jan 29th to borovets and now really starting to wonder if i have made a mistake booking so early without any snow reports to go on.

Can anyone offer any insight ? previous experience ? is it normal for this time of year and does it tend to just dump throughout the whole of jan .... my god i hope so ......

Thanks matt

Re:Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

Hi Matt23 i have never been to Bulgaria skiing for this exact reason. I watch the reports quite frequently and the same seems to happen every year with Bulgaria. Last year it was very late before they reported any snow, and when i say late i mean compared to french/austrian resorts etc.

When are you going? Does your tour op offer protection for your holiday against no snow, if not insurance?

On a more positive note i have a friend who went a couple of yrs ago and he told me there was tons of the stuff. Sit tight and it will come. :D

Christian

For fear of repeating myself, this and the dreadful infrastructure of the country are 2 good enough reasons not to go, and are why I never have and never will consider a ski holiday to Bulgaria.

We fly on 29th jan . as for not going to bulgaria . I would love to have gone to any of the main European resorts but as this was as a present for my partners birthday and im not exactly filthy rich is was a good compromise on the budget i have. have been to bansko and whilst we hit some freak weather fully enjoyed it. also have friends with an apartment in bansko and they go each year for the half term ( believe its second week in feb and have never had problems ). Was also told late jan early feb was about the best time to go. As i said budget kinda dictated the location and just really hope it hasn't cost me more in the long run.

Im sure you wont have any problems but if in doubt then make sure you have good insurance incase pistes are closed. At least then you might be able to get something back.

Failing this as the tour op for your money back and book a last min to france.

Matt23 check this link... http://www.igluski.com/bulgaria/bansko-snow-history_23498

Looks like your timing is perfect to me. And it doesn't look unusual for December to be on the sparse side for snow so it really is too early to be fretting.

P.S. Good on yer for giving your partner such a fab present. I was taken skiing for my birthday last year and it was probably the best b'day I've ever had.

Re:Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

Hi,
We went to Borovets last year and struggled majorly with the snow. flew out for a week on the 9th Jan. I believe the rest of the season was a bit better but we also went to Andorra at the end of the season and that was awesome!
There seemed to be far less snow making facilities in Borovets and weather was random! 15c displayed on the rila on our first day!
Saying that snow looks good there at the moment
http://www.borovets-pms.com/video.php
snow making around the clock and some snow in the air.
Borovets was great overall and I would go back tomorrow. Make sure you pay a visit to white magic and have a drink with Christov. Great guy, ex olympic skier. spent an hour with him and didnt stop laughing.
Have a great time,
Matt

Re:Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

Lots of snow right now in Bulgaria but not sure about end of January. Depends what temp would be. If it is 20 degrees as it was in the beginning of December ...
They have some snow cannons in Borovec. Look at the maps. They are in Bulgarian but the snowflakes are for snow cannons :)
http://www.borovets-bg.com/main/runs_and_lifts.php?cell=16&lang=bg

My favourite runs there are Yastrebec and Popangelov.

Re:Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

I'm not entirely sure how you can have an opinion of a resort without going there...

I have however been to Borovets a couple of times, and thoroughly enjoyed it on both occasions; we went early Feb both times. Granted, 2008 conditions were better as it had snowed most of the day and night before we got there, but the following year was fine. Some of the lower slopes were iffy, but on the whole, it was very good.

There is one run in particular (blue, I can't remember the name) that takes you through the woods, and twists and turns all the way down to the resort, it was fantastic…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtube_gdata_player&v=vn2fZrG6Fzg

There are very few snow sure resorts in Europe, and if a budget trip is what you're after, Bulgaria has to be top of the list.
Re:Booked for bulgaria and no snow reported at all and none forecast anytime soon

matt dont worry you will have plenty of snow when you get there.
ive been to borovets loads of times, but usually late feb/early march as a last trip of the season with all the lads and when the snow is at its best but historically late jan is okay. the resort itself is pretty basic but theres plenty of lively bars and places to eat...and its cheap, no way as cheap as it used to be though. the ski area aint massive but enough to keep you busy, unless youre one of those that refuse to ski the same piste twice.

for future ref, check out resorts on the milky way as you'll find some cheap deals if you dont mind roughing it a bit.
