Snow socks for tyres

Does anybody have any experiences of using snowsocks instead of snowchains? I know that certain car insurances dont recognise them - how have you got on with them? I gather they are easier to fit than snowchains - but do they do the job? :D

Re:Snow socks for tyres

They are the only option for some cars where there is insufficient clearance to use chains without fouling the body.

Apparently they work quite well but don't break the compacted snow up as well as chains do.

Re:Snow socks for tyres

I've used them on various BMWs where chains are not possible. They are very easy to fit and remove and I can honestly say that I wouldn't bother with chains again.

Re:Snow socks for tyres

During the recent bout of snow in Dublin, I spotted a Council van with snow socks on. The driver was extremely happy with their capacity to keep him moving around the city on icy compacted snow. The impression I get is that they are really quite suitable for the occasional compacted snow conditions that we get on these islands. However, I suspect they would not cope very well with a heavy dump in the alps.

Re:Snow socks for tyres

Hi

Yes I have them and think they are fantastic. Got them for heading to Meribel over Christmas and gave them a test last week in the snow. I took our car into all sorts of situations that I would not have dreamt of before. Up steep hills, stop/starting on them and doing three point hill turns, well perhaps maybe five point turns, it was a rather narrow lane, took them onto very deep snow stopped/started/turned with absolutely no spin of the wheels. There is no way I could have done what I did without them, I would have been stuck within two seconds. Hope this helps.

S

Re:Snow socks for tyres

Sorry for the cross threading, but are snow socks a good alternative to winter tyres? It sounds like they achieve the same thing, but with more flexibility.
