Where to go skiing in January?

So I'm looking to go skiing in January but I drive myself mad looking for a place with the best snow and not too expensive. So far we went skiing to La Plagne in France. It was 2 years ago in February and was very busy because of French holidays (I've been there once before in January, my first time skiing, loved it). We went to Sauze d'Oulx 3 years ago and it was great. We had great snow but I can't remember when did we go there.
This year I thought about going to Austria but their resorts are pretty low above the sea level and i am worried if there will be enough snow. :?: I know there are places higher with more snow but the price goes quite a bit up.
Places I was looking at was Kitzbuhel, Mayrhofen, Finkenberg. We stayed previously close to ski lifts. the gondole in Mayrhofen doesn't look too appealing to me.
So, can someone please help me and give me some ideas, where to go skiing in January where I won't have to worrie if there will be enough snow or not. Thanks in advance. :D

Re:Where to go skiing in January?

Hi, Villars Switzerland. Not too lively, not too quiet. And is a huge playground with lots to do. I went there 1st week in Jan 2010. Just trying to work out where to go next myself.

But have a look, we got a right bargain on accommodation as well.

Hope this helps

Marc

Hello Marc_uk. I haven't even checked Switzerland as I thought it would be more expensive. I'll have to have a look. Thanks

Switzerland is more expensive than Austria, but not as expensive as France. Already there is more than a metre of snow at mountain level, across most of Austria, and !

Re:Where to go skiing in January?

There will be more than enough snow in Mayrhofen, its not low altitude skiing although the village is at 690m.
If you like the look of the place, go for it.
The gondola out of town is about 12 minutes or so, high and scenic (or in other words for pussy cats - scary!) but the skiing is mixed and varied and over 600km on the whole lift pass.
Finkenburg has quieter access to the slopes, but is a sleepy little village and if you want the good bars and eating places, you'll rely on taxis so I'd suggest stopping in The Hof itself.
Up to you, but recommended by me.

Re:Where to go skiing in January?

Why not go further up the Zillertal valley & stay in Lanersbach great access to the Zillertal 3000 range, no worries there about snow! Lanersbach has enough pubs to make apres ski interesting without being a wrestling match. We are planning a two centre ski trip for January 2012 & Lanersbach is going to be one of the resorts.

Good link:
http://www.bergfex.com/tux/
Re:Where to go skiing in January?

Checked Villars Switzerland and it is definitely too expensive for me this year and more expensive than La Plagne 2 years ago. I'm on a bit short budget this year and it makes it harder to find something good. Anyone skied around Mayrhofen mid January?

Check the Vorarlberg resorts: http://www.skiresorts-test.com/ski-resorts/vorarlberg
The Montafon valley is vast, great skiing at the Silvretta Nova area.

Re:Where to go skiing in January?

Mayrhofen is great, i'd highly recommend it. Got a couple of mates going there over New Year and they tell me the snow conditions are looking brilliant already.

Another option might be somewhere like Cervinia in Italy? Just an idea! Its high altitude, guaranteed snow, and is on the other side of the Matterhorn from Zermatt (the area lift pass covers both areas). Massive area, guaranteed good snow, and one of the best on - mountain restaurants i've ever been to!!

If you want any more info about Cervinia, let me know.

Re:Where to go skiing in January?

Tony_H how was the snow mid Jan? We have always gone half board until now. Is it better to go B&B and find somewhere to eat in the evening? Is eating out much more expensive? Can you advise any websites with good deals in Mayrhofen? The best deals I found were with Crystal ski.
Thanks in advance.

So many questions.....

Ok, first things first. January snow is never ever a problem. Its often sunny and cold, but the base this season is as good already as it has been for years, so dont worry a thing about the snow.

I've gone B&B, Half Board, and this season we are going catered chalet. Eating out is well priced and theres lots of choice. Its no more than here, and sometimes less, although the exchange rate has put paid to many of the good deals I have had. Italian, Austrian, courden bleu, traditional - theres loads of places to try.
I'd recommend Mo's - tex mex on the cross roads in town; Krammerwirt for traditional Austrian but pricey; Hotel Neue Post for an extensive and cheap menu; Mannis for a really good vibe and good food too. Theres a couple of decent Italians too but I forget their names now.

As for good deals - we've booked this season with Crystal, and I've never used them before. I've been with Inghams several times, Nielsen once, and also booked direct through www.mayrhofen.at and taken my own flights and hired a car.
I've had a week HB for GBP229, and week B&B for GBP150, and also been Xmas week for GBP650 HB but stopping at the Landhaus Roscher with dinner at the Strass.

Expect to pay around GBP400 HB this season on average, but you will get good deals if you wait and can be flexible.

Try skideals website, teletext holidays and also bookableski.com

Now, hurry up and book!!!!!!!
