Anywhere to ski last week in April?

I know it's too early to tell how much snow will fall this year, but I was wondering whether there would normally be any resorts still open at the end of April, either Europe, Canada or USA? Also, with Easter falling in late April 2011 would that make any resorts that are open very busy?

Norway - Hemsedal is usually open through to the May day holiday. I presume the others do too.

Tignes or val thoren but you might have too do it independent as tour operators have stopped by then due to lack of punters

Hi,

Les Arcs last skiable day is the 30th April from memory , and Val D'isere/Tignes is about the 6th May or there abouts...you could also look at Val thorens , Serre Chevaliere , Chamonix.

I think if the weather goes to plan , more or less anywhere above 1800m should be good anywhere, with mainly North , North,North East slopes and a glacier.

Iv heard you can ski in saas fee - switzerland pretty much all year round, iv also heard warren smith does a instructor course from July to September so the snow must be good in April surely.

Thanks everyone. I was just looking at the calendar and realised that because of the public holiday for The Wedding on Friday 29th April and our school being closed until Wed 27th April, we could go away that week and only miss 2 working days. :D

Dave, Obergurgl is a very high resort at 1930m, and I know people who ski there late April and often into May, and they have more fresh snow than in the height of winter.
I suggested it on the basis of knowing people who regularly go there year in year out very late in the season BECAUSE the snow is not a problem.

Have a look at Engelberg above Lucerne, ski at the Titlis glacier. Central Switzerland always get good snow. Its easy accessible from Zurich, the train goes all the way to the village centre.

Yes yes but thats common across Europe this season. In fact, I'd wager Obergurgl has held up better than the vast majority of other alpine ski stations this season.
We need to remember this season has been shocking in terms of conditions, so Obergurgl in hindsight was a good choice for Ally. I suggested it as I would think its as good as anywhere at this time of year. On reflection, I wouldn't bother going end of April this year and pay for a trip for next season.
Hows Niederau at the end of April.......closed?

No Tony, of course Niederau is not open at the end of April.

My point was that you dismissed my original suggestion that Obergurgl might be sticky, which turned out to be the way it was. I was fully aware of the resort height, but you cannot prevent nature doing it's work.

We did try to get accomodation in Obergurgl for late March, but a high % of the hotels were fully booked, and direct booking offers were over 1000 Euros per person.

In fact, the Inghams reps told us that there were rocks showing through at Obergurgl, and that Niederau was in better condition. We discussed this, because I didn't believe that to be the case. What was resolved was that in high resorts, in the majority of cases, the substrate is rock, while in Tyrol, the substrate is meadow. The piste machines deal better with a meadow base, rather than a rock base. Interesting thought.
