Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

Having been on the piste for more years than i can remember,it is
becoming more apparent that the piste is getting trashed that much quicker in the following circumstances
1. After a fresh dusting.
2. On lower slopes, particuarly south facing
3. Spring skiing in the afternoon.

The above are all due to the technique that the majority of snowboarders use to bluff ther way down the piste. This is
getting to be far more of a problem due to the number of (apprentice)boarders who during there early outings on boards"are going down runs that are beyond their capability leaning back and scraping 1 metre wide sections of snow up in the air which when snow is thin on the ground is of no benefit to anyone. With boards getting even longer this can only create more problems for Lift Management Companies and Skiers & Boarders who can ride without scraping.

And as for boarding after you're 30, forget it .

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

Out of interest does anybody think that in the future at some point resorts will start tailoring different slopes specifically towards boarders or skiers? I don't mean in order to segregate or ban one from the other, more to cater for preference. For example, I can't imagine a mogulled slope is particularly easy or enjoyable on a board. At least on skis we have the opportunity to do short turns which suit the terrain better.

So, if skiing didn't exist and boarders could start from scratch and write a wish list of what they wanted from a slope, how different would it be from the pistes we know already? There must have been a time when someone said "I'm sick of looking for little jumps here and there, what I really want is a really long, steep thing I can do loads of jumps on one after the other" and the half pipe was born.

Am I talking complete nonsense (probably) or is there a tiny nugget of an idea in there somewhere?

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

I think that's a terrible attitude to have. especially with your countless years of experience.
ive seen beginner skiers snow ploughing their way down slopes clearing what little snow there is off an icy piste. fact is we all have to start somewhere and im sure even an expert like yourself took on a piste which was above you skill level at some point. why not just be tolerant of all people using the mountain then we can all have fun.

I agree with you ewan, and on the point of older people snowboarding, due to a knee injury I will never be able to get on a pair of skis, but I am able to snowboard quite well, so I intend to be snowboarding for many more years to come. There are plenty of people now, and more every year that are over 30 and snowboard.

"And as for boarding after you're 30, forget it "

I'm 48, learned to board 5 years ago. Skied all my life. Not uncommon for storms to bring in 25-100 cms of snow overnight. On days like that, SB is definitely the way to go. As for not wanting to share the mountain with boarders, better get over that.

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

I thought the boarder issues had faded away as the sport (and a lot boarders) matured. Certainly you see fewer boarders sitting mid piste than you used too.

As has already been said there will always be both skiiers & boarders who get themselves onto a piste that stretches their comfort limits and they perhaps have to revert to basics. I think that's good - pushing your limits but recognising that sometimes safety is better than style!

Certainly pistes take a fair degree of wear but isn't that why we pay big fees for ski passes? (snow making & piste bashers)

Pick your resort carefully & holiday times & you can have the pistes to yourself (almost).

What a load of tripe the alps are big enough for all of us, boarding came on to the scene when popularity of skiing was beginning to dwindle and boarding brought in a new influx of young people to appreciate the snow and mountains.
Should it be banned No and for it being just for the youth, I think trencher answers that question

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

Paulschlote, I apologize for the "back at you" rant above. There are still a few ski only resorts in the US. I actually love going to Deer Valley occasionally. One of it's atractions for me is not that there are no snowboarders, but there are fewer adolescents period. Nothing against youth, just nice now, and again to enjoy a more sedate atmosphere.

You may not know this, but there are as many kids in the terrain park, and half pipe on skis now, as on boards. So Deer Valley is not attractive to youth "period", not just because they don't allow snowboards, but because they don't have the terrain kids want. The three remaining ski only resorts are all close to other resorts that allow snowboarding. This means that the children of their guest can be bussed to a snowboard resort nearby. Taos resort recently stopped being ski only, but it did not have a nearby resort for members of families that snowboard, or like to ski in the park. Economically, ski only resorts are only viable if there is an adjacent snowboarding resort.

As others have said, if it weren't for snowboards, you would be paying a lot more, to ski fewer resorts, on long skinny skis

Thanks for your response to my Question posted last night. As some of you have gathered it was to create a debate and not have a pop at boarders. I agree that boarders have given the mountains a fresh/new lease of life and i do enjoy checking out the "Good Boarders" who can ride the half pipes and do the kind of tricks you normaly only see on the Extreme sport channel. I think we would all agree that there is nothing more annoying than a group of hoody boarders sitting in the middle of the piste just below a flat section of piste just chillin out oblivious to what might be approaching rather quicly from behind (and i don't mean Graham Norton)

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

boarding gave skiing the kick up the arse it needed, stepping away from this posh toff elitist scene it was (and in some resorts still is), skiing knew it had to catch up when boarding took over, massive improvements in ski technology, and even fashion has probably brought skiing back to the same level as boarding is currently, as regards to the condition of the piste's being worse, i would put that down to them being a lot more busy these days, some resorts are not boarder friendly, especially resorts in andorra, with endless flat sections between pistes, i think the opinion of the poster is outdated and frankly shows their age!

im a skier by the way...

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

As a skier of twenty years, I decided to give snowboarding a try (perhaps don't knock it until you've tried it would be an appropriate motto here) and loved it.
It has its limitations, only being able to have one binding fastened on lifts and having to sit in some afore mentioned less than favourable spots to get going again. Though these can be kept to a minimum very easily and the rate of learning is considerably faster than skiing.

Lets face it, skiing has its own drawbacks too, I don't recall watching any snowboarder slip on a wet mountain restaurant floor and end up covered in soup last year.... lucky skier!!

Each day my body gets older I thank Snowboarding for making skiing so much better and easier.

And reminds me to wear my helmet........

Gosh, did I say that??

Where SB ends and Skiing begins (based on your perspective) is getting blurred.....

Have any of you guys tried the Lib Tech NAS skis? They showed up an a few Patrollers and some locals in the back-country last season. NAS stands for "Narrow Ass Snowboard". Not only are they really really wide, but have a "wavey" almost serrated edge. I know two guys to took the plunge and bought some last year, pretty much the perfect all-mountain ski (from a snowboard company no-less), cause they rock in POW and hold an edge really nice on ice and crud. We can only buy them here in high-end snowboard shops.

http://www.lib-tech.com/nas/

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

The reason I got off topic in this thread is the Lip Tech ski is made by a well know snowboard company, found in snowboard shops using mostly snowboard technology.

The Lip Tech boards have a "wavy edge", so do the skis.

So while the Icelantic skis look awesome, and I would personally love to try some. it's not really the same.

Hopefully, we've blown away the guy's original argument that boarders have no place on a mountain with skiers. We're all there to slide. We do it in are own way.

IF we ant to start a discussion on what should not be on a piste run at a resort, it's those ridicules snowblades. And I'm talking from a control and rate injury perspective. I'm sure they are lots of fun.

But that's another thread......

One of the Patrollers I work with has a pair, he swears by them. They are as wide as a backcountry ski, he claims that the edges hold on the iciest runs. You have to be willing to tune them by hand, but we all do that, right? Also they are not cheap, under $1000 cdn would be a really good deal. But they are made in USA, so probably cheaper there.
Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

From what I understand Magna Traction was really designed for park rats who wreck their edges on slides, but still need to be able to carve. Real carvers who have tried it say it doesn't compare to a well tuned edge, for edge hold, but is better than blunt, mangled edges. So I guess if you never tune your skis, it might be for you.

More useful recent tech from snowboards would be klothoid side cut radius shapes, and compound cambers. The next generation of riser plates will blow your mind, again snowboard tech.

I have to admit I had to ask my kids what some of that meant. Point well taken though! Technology of Skiing has in increased leaps and bounds because because skiing had stagnated in the 80's and 90's. I have to wonder if I was still skiing on 203cm straight skis if I'd even be doing it today?

Wonder if Paulschlote is still reading this tread, Paul, you there?

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

I don't know that the OP was necessarily trolling. I am not sure about the reasons he sighted, but I have had similar conversations with my group of ski buddies.

We seek out 2 things, moguls & powder. Boarders don't have any negative effect on powder (more than skiers anyway), but on the moguls, they commonly shave them off, into odd patterns. The somewhat standard mogul is no more. It is just the way it is these days, but kind of sad for us skiers also.

The other thing I will say is that, in general, snow boarders are a MUCH more foul mouthed group. Getting back into skiing in 2008, it is common to hear kids loudly saying "f***" this or that. It is almost always a group of snowboarders. It doesn't necessarily bother me a lot but there are commonly kids around as well as older people that don't need to hear their lack of an intelligent vocabulary.

Brad

Disrespect is never alright! I'd would like to disagree with you because I snowboard myself as do my kids, however, I think I have to agree with you, that group seems to be guilty of that more than others. But, just playing both sides of the argument, "Park brats" of either sliding persuasion seem to have no problem with "f***" this or that." . Also, as snowboarding matures, it moves further away from the "skater culture' more towards mainstream.

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

Again it's an age thing, as Dave said. Teenagers on boards, and skis have this tendency to be obnoxious. The older you get, the worse it seems. It's just a reflection of the larger world, and nothing really to do with what's on their feet. I actually see a lot more well behaved kids than not, so it's a pretty minor deal in the overall scheme of things.

Re:Snowboarding - Should it be banned from some resorts . and is it just for the youth.

I have to disagree with Brad that its boarders and not skiers who use more "industrial" language, certainly in Europe anyway. However, maybe the connection is made because boarding is definitely something younger people do compared to skiing, and younger people these days do tend to be more lax with their language.
You'll also find the scene that goes with freestyle skiing is very similar to boarding, and there is a language of its own connected with both, much of which involves what you would call "swear words".

I can't obviously speak for America, but having got to know a few of my son's American friends, the use of the F word is much more widespread in America than over here, and probably not even regarded as "swearing" any more?

Hi, No boarding shouldn't be banned - Skiiers and boarders seem to be getting used to sharing the slopes now to me and don't keep boarding for the young either. What better than to do both - board on powder and also board when too slushy to ski - great fun. I'm in my 50s and enjoying boarding more than skiing when conditions suit (Skiis best when icy though).

In relation to "industrial language" I find the worst offenders to be professional drivers who pass themselves off as skiers. These individuals also bring the new phenomenon to our resorts known as "piste rage" They are easily identified as they are often seen drinking and hanging around in groups on piste with bobble hats on. If you are unfortunate enough to see them call Crimestoppers immediately.

Morning Peps

Please accept my public apology, i am not in the business of causing offence, upset or hurt in anyway but may have pushed the envelope to far this time. It was, what I thought, light hearted tongue in cheek banter and I thought it would be taken as such. I always try to keep myself cheerful and look at the lighter side of life and if I have caused offence or hurt then this has hurt me!
Sorry.
Alistair

Yep. It would be really stupid teasing someone for wearing a bobble if they didn't. Same as it wouldn't be funny posting a pic of someone in a 'dork' helmet and calling them window lickers if nobody wore helmets.

Simples.

SAVE THE BOBBLES !!!!
Campaign now, don't let political corectness rule!!
I have been banned by OH from being seen by anyone wearing my bobble :(
But ....
It lives in my gear bag and gets fondly looked at every year.
Mind you - fluorescent orange/yellow/blue with an 8" bobble it is quite visible :D
