Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast

Quote from Sky News :- Snow showers and freezing weather could hit some parts of the UK next week, the Sky News weather department is warning.

As Cornwall mops up after heavy rain and flooding, those in the east will need to break out the de-icer as Scandinavian winds blast Britain with cold air.

Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang says there will be an increasing threat of snow from the end of next week, mainly for the north and east of the country, with daytime temperatures not rising much above 4C.

The showers could be heavy as we move into December, bringing a risk of more serious accumulations.

"The models are saying there is definite a trend towards colder and wintry weather," she said.

"The wind will swing in from Scandinavia, bringing with it the threat of snow to eastern parts at the end of next week.

"It's going to be an interesting week of weather."

Long range forecasts point to a cold and snowy start to December, especially in the east, with the chilly weather expected to last until at least the second week of the month.

However, Lang said it was too early to say whether we will see a repeat of last year's record-breaking winter, which saw much of the country covered in snow.

Snow and freezing temperatures in December last year paralysed much of the UK, trapping Eurostar trains in the Channel Tunnel and hitting transport around the country in the run-up to Christmas.

With Ladbrokes offering odds of 5/1 of snow falling in London on Christmas Day, Lang said it might be worth a bet on a white Christmas.

"I would not say no," she added.

They mean we might get a few frosts. Pretty good guess for this time of year. If we get snow before Xmas, I will be very surprised. Mind you, I can't wait for the chaos it will cause on the roads to the airports.....

Spent most of my childhood praying for snow in the UK, but the thought fills me with dread now. We are completely incompetent at functioning with more than a light dusting, which means roads and airports closed, which means ski hols at risk :evil: Apparently, with everyone on the money saving trail lots of councils haven't bothered ordering much salt either so if anything the disruption will be worse than last year. :roll:

My thoughts exactly, especially when my business relies on the roads and airports being open.

Nightmare Tony, my OH in same position with delivery vans out on the roads all day every day. It's pathetic. The opportunity is there to buy equipment to deal with it, but they'd prefer to save a few pounds in the short term instead. Grrrrr :evil:

I remember that Nelly, I know someone that was in Basingstoke at the time and it took him approx 5 hours to cover 30 miles back into the Surrey area :shock:

I'm glad we don't have our dairy cows anymore, when I think about the snow.

Christmas 1981 I think it was, we were snowed in for about 3 weeks and the milk tanker couldn't get to us so we had to give away all the milk to the village, which was also snowed in. And all the water troughs were frozen over so we had to keep smashing them, we had to light a fire to get the water running to milk the cows, we couldn't get the cows out of the fields because the gates were about 3 foot deep in snow - until we dug them out, we had to drag corn and hay 2 miles over the snow on a car bonnet to get it to the cows. And then the electricity and water went off. At the end, they had to bring helicopters in to drop food to some of the villages. Boy - I was fit at the end. I had to walk 8 miles each day over the snow and slog my guts out all day.

And we lost a huge amount of money.

I love the snow when I'm on a ski-ing holiday, but I really, really hate to see it here.

Hi All,

This is absolutely smashtastic news.. :D :D :D , yes although at the grand old age of 38....where snow is concerned..yes I'm actually about 5 years old.

There is a weather forecaster called joe Bastardi ( yes it's his real name folks ) and he says that the UK will experience a winter similar to last years, but Europe from the Pyranees to Eastern European Countris such as Bosnia, Albania, and as far as Turkey and northern Greece are set to experience a right snowy, bitterly cold b*****d of a winter.

He is also predicting large snow events ( above normal across the alps ).....hopefully the winter gods are paying attention and reading from the same script :thumbup:.

Just make sure you all have good tyres , top up your anti-freeze and put a winter solution in your screen wash, a set of chains might be a good idea anyway and I'm sure all will be fine.

Checking up on elderly neighbours etc should be mentioned more also I feel.

Heres to a massive winter....right wheres my hip flask? :D

Ian, did a wee search last night and obtained some good instructions for waxing (skis not the other,thats to painful :wink:) Will give it a go however, at this rate mine will be done before you break a sweat :D Will a B&D workmate be ok instead of a specialist ski vice?

Hi,

Checked a weather forecast for the next seven days for Les Arcs......at 1600 it's going to be -18oC BBbbbrrrrr!!!!!, but then it's going to be bit of a heatwave for me on the 2nd and only -5oC....

.....so shorts as usual it is then, who said about "mad dogs and englishmen "?

If anyone needs a lift from Geneva to BsM on the 2nd ( land from Luton at 9.20am )I'll be the only idiot at the airport with shorts on :D :D

We had some snow last night - but not much, about 1 cm. Enough so I had to scrape the car off, drive through slush and got wheel spin going up one of our very steep hills, where there was a bit more snow.

What speed would you recommend then, when driving on half an inch of snow, with ice and slush? I reckon I do about 20 mph on our minor roads, depending on the conditions, how steep and bendy the road is and who's in front of me.

You can't say a specific speed, as you need to take into consideration all the factors you mention, and most importantly you need to assess the condition of your own car, mainly the tyres as 99% of road users in the UK only ever use regular tyres, all season or summer tyres, which will just spin when you hit the power or slide when you hit the brakes.
I have just had a set of snow tyres fitted to my 7 seater, and going out this morning it was refreshing to feel the extra grip they have, and whilst the majority of drivers were doing 30mph on the inside lane of the bypass, I was able to drive in the outside lane which had a thin covering of snow.
Obviously you need to consider your braking and cornering, but thats down to how the individual drives and how their vehicle handles.
It would be wrong of me to suggest a specific speed though, Ally. I am sure you have narrower and hillier roads where you are, which would mean driving differently.

Absolutely. Its the law in many european countries between November and April. I had to change all 4 on mine, and went for winter tyres. In in ideal world, I'd have a complete alternative set of wheels with regular and winter tyres and change them as and when the weather dictates, but it wasn't either practical or affordable this time round for me.
Looking ahead, when I change all 4 again, its going to cost approx GBP400 for the tyres, and you can buy a set of alloys online with regular tyres fitted for roughly the same cost anyway, so I might go for that option at the time.

Intermittent flurrys of what I call "proper" snow here at the moment - big dumpy flakes falling slowly from a dark sky. Certainly makes you think about skiing, and its also an excuse to get the ski clothes out today!

Tony, They sound ideal for your business but also open up the option of DIY drive holidays although you may need a set of snow chains also. You could also then add the money saved on your trip to the overall cost effectiveness of buying them for your business. You do knock up the mileage :shock:

You can use a clothes iron, even a steam type, but don't expect to use it again for clothes. I think the main reason steam types are frowned upon, is that if you are using specialist waxes, the holes may contaminate your new wax, with some different wax. Not a problem if you are always using same universal wax. If the wax smokes, the temp is too high. As you pass the iron down the skis, you are looking for the wax to remain wet for a few inches behind the iron. Start cooler, and increase the temp if you need to. The harder (colder snow temp)the wax, the higher the temp you will need to melt it.

Thanks Trencher that is just the sort of information I need. I can get away with a cheaper domestic iron. I am going to have a go at sharpening my edges but will need some advice on the right angles to file furthermore, to keep the cost down I will invest in a B&D workmate. I have my old skis to practice on in the first instance. :-)

Your welcome. I think an old piece of carpet on the floor might be better than a workmate. Just totally the wrong height, even if you could hold the skis in it. The little Swix benches are much longer than a workmate, and I could see it tipping as you get to the ends of the skis. As you are only going to be doing this a few times a year, kneeling on the floor, with the skis on an old carpet is not a terrible way to work on them. I've done it several times, when away from home.

Thanks Trencher, that looks very 8) Your experience has been noted and I will save some money with the bench. Two questions - How do you maintain the ski in the right position on the carpet? Are there some inexpensive freestanding clamps or vices available on the market? I will google the Swix bench in the morning.

I always go for a specialist iron as you can control the temp better, I brought a cheap bench from ebay and vices to hold the ski an edger .... sorry my bacon sandwich is ready bye

It was bitterly cold yesterday and didn't rise above 0c, -6c on Sunday morning here.
However, as the evening wore on it warmed up. I was at Stansted at 11pm last night and it was 1c, but it started snowing finely on the way home and was settling on the A14 and M11 last night.
This morning, theres been a tiny bit more snow overnight but no sub zero temps, and yet the traffic locally has gone M E N T A L. Queues from my village into Peterborough, 9 miles. Its ridiculous, as the roads are totally passable, its just wet on the surface but people are driving at 5mph and causing the queues!
Luton at 7am this morning was a different story - fine snow from Baldock and then it was tricky across the A505 from Hitchin with 1 lane totally white and a bit slippy.
But the sun is out now and its warming up for sure.
I believe more snow is forecast later in the day though.

It is thawing but lots of crunching through ice on puddles and the country lanes were hilarious in places. Luckily only met the postie and a delivery tanker.
So far this year I haven't had to pull anyone out of a ditch!

In the interest of statistics, I've just been out into my garden & measured a snow depth of 25cm - & it's still snowing (North Notts/South Yorkshire border)! Hubby had to use his snow chains to get home from work tonight, which he was very excited about :roll:

Thank goodness we could get to Sheffield last night to see the Warren Miller film - I'd have been miffed if the weather had stopped us getting there!

Should read Standstill Britain. Snow still about 3 inches in our part of Surrey with 10-20 cms forecast over the next night and day. Its the ice thats causing our problems at the moment. I have never seen our service roads so bad! sheet ice. The main roads are not too bad its just trying to reach them thats the problem.

We haven't had any snow since the sprinkling we had (page 4). So I am very pleased - thanks Nelly for sorting that out for me (page 2 I think).

But it is extremely cold, especially for our location and time of year. We are using the electric blanket, wood stove, and central heating (had to order some more oil) to keep warm. And I am back to breaking ice in the cattle/sheep water troughs again. Fortunately the car I have now is petrol so it starts okay, in spite of the cold.

The minor roads are pretty dangerous because we had a lot of rain before the big freeze and there are several minor streams crossing/going down the roads which are now hazardous ice rinks, particularly on the hills.

That figure would be quite respectable for the upper slopes on a well known ski resort!

I hope everyone manages to get away for their ski holidays. After worrying for months that there wouldn't be enough snow it would be too awful to miss it because of too much snow here in the U.K.

Definitely a worry. Mr EmmaEvs came home last night and calmly told me that there was no way on earth he was missing this holiday (he hasn't had time off since Feb). Apparently if the plane is cancelled we will be using any/all other means to get there. Trains, planes and automobiles springs to mind. I suggested off the top of my head a train to London, Eurostar to France, hire a car and drive the rest of the way. He didn't bat an eyelid. We may or may not succeed in our mission but it's likely to be memorable!

Ally - yes we still have a few weeks left so it's not an immediate concern. Can't help wondering that if it's like this now, what will it be like further in to winter. I think we're both preparing ourselves just in case. I do feel for those who are going in the next week or so. I think it was last year that we had the 'it's opening, no it's staying closed, it's opening etc' drama in the days running up. I read your update - good to know that the worst hasn't hit you. Funny enough I was thinking of you having to bash through the water troughs (it might have been the news that triggered it off) and was racking my brains trying to think of some way that could make that easier. Failed so far. Sorry. :(

Are you suggesting diesel cars don't start when its cold?
I've had diesels for years, and never has one not started in cold weather - thats why they have glow plugs.
Funnily enough, 2 of my old cars (going back a while now) never used to start when it was cold and they were both petrol.

I'm glad to hear that your diesel cars have always started okay in cold weather. It is, however, a scientific fact that it's much harder to start a diesel engine in cold weather. The engine will use a lot more battery power to get going, because the diesel fuel will be colder and thicker, and the block and battery will be colder, and diesel ignites using the heat of compression unlike a petrol engine which has an electrical ignition system.

I agree, modern diesel cars do have glow plugs (small heaters) but these wear out with age and require quite a bit of battery power to work. In fact, a couple of days ago my husband had to come to the rescue of one of our friends by fitting new glow plugs for him because the cold weather resulted in him having difficulty starting his car.

If you're not careful the battery of a diesel car will soon run down in very cold weather, especially if you're doing short runs, because of the extra electrical energy required to start it plus run the rear windscreen heaters etc.

In the past I have coped with this by using hot water bottles, blankets, bringing the battery inside overnight and re-charging it, bump starting or towing, aerostart (on the tractors) and even hot water.

It is of course more of a problem with older vehicles (like the sort I usually have!).

Petrol cars usually have more of a problem starting in damp wet weather, especially if you do something daft like leave the bonnet up when it's raining, because of the electrical ignition system.

I just asked Mr Emmaevs (who supplies car parts) and he said what AllyG said.

For those of you who have diesel cars and may have difficulty starting them in the cold he also offered a tip. Normally when starting the car you only heat the plugs once before turning the key fully to spark the ignition. He suggested following the 'glow plug heating process' three times before trying to actually start the car. He said if that doesn't work you need a new battery and/or glow plugs. He also said "and tell them glow plugs are available from us by mail order!" :lol: :lol:

I for one do not expect either of my diesel cars not to start just because they are diesels. Like I said, its the petrol engines that gave me more problems in the past, but thats going back a while, and all engines have come on since then, particularly diesels.

Yes Ally, diesels can drain the battery more because of whats needed on start up, but if the car has been looked after and things like the glow plugs have been replaced as and when they should have been, or the cambelt for example, you should not expect a diesel NOT to start just because its cold.

It is, of course, a scientific fact that diesel has a lower freezing temperature than petrol.

I have winter tyres fitted to the Land Rover. They were offered, after negotiation, at the same price as standards. Our local conditions are almost 2ft snow, and the LR takes this in it's stride. Uphill, no probs. Towed out quite a few cars this week. Keep a shovel, and emergencies in the LR, just in case.

Don't you love the quiet though. During a good dump, every sound is muffled. I was outside this evening with 2.5cm/hr coming down, and it's just so peaceful. When you lie in bed, there's no distant traffic noise. Lucky for us though there is the loud roar of the occasional snowplough, now and again. It's also nice to be able to start up the snow blower in the morning, instead of wealding a snow shovel :wink:

We have rain here now, with a few icy patches still hanging about, and last night I skidded a bit out in the car (couldn't stop coming up to a roundabout) but I was okay :D

It's supposed to freeze here again Sunday night so unless the roads have a chance to dry up first it's going to be really lethal :shock:

We've filled up our tanks with central heating oil, and I've brought a load of seasoned firewood into the shed, so we should be fine. At least I haven't had to smash any more ice in the drinking troughs today, and they're running okay.

Agreed Trencher, its that sort of feeling that started our pre-christmas skiing trips. Its hard to explain being up the hill when it snowing with few people around. It sets the scene of peaceful sollitude. A minute being in a massive universe, great :-)

Went to bed last night -4 outside woke up to +1 and the snow starting to melt, all the back roads are now clear ..... I suppose I just gotta wait for the next lot to come :lol:

Bumped for phase two of the "winter Blast"

Snow on and off most of Today in Surrey. With more on route on Saturday and Sunday. -4 at the present time, roads looking dangerous again!

Well, in keeping with the Alpine spirit I've been out this morning and cleared the fresh snow from the pavement outside my house (and my neighbour's door). I wonder if it'll catch on. My only regret is not doing it yesterday too. Stupidly listened to some scaremongering that if I did I could be liable for anyone falling. Now yesterday's snow has compacted into ice overnight so I've had to salt that to break it up.

I'm quietly miffed though that snow was forecast last night and the night before and yet there was no grit whatsoever on the roads. I'm on a main road used by everyone for access to the nearby M4, and it's a bus route so really no excuse.

What a coincidence. I've suddenly realised I don't have enough in my budget to pay my council tax. I'm sure they'll understand though. I'll just refer them back to their Tough Poo Policy.

12-15 cms of snow in our area of Surrey yesterday. Just got the OH's car out of the drive (incline and icy)and she is making her way to work. Next snow indicated for tomorrow. I hope the Christmas skiers get away ok with the disrupted flights and weather etc.

Mayhem on the A421 in Beds today, it was like driving through the arctic: minus 11, freezing fog, no visible tarmac, rutted ice, vile.
Chaos at Heathrow when they closed T1 and sent all the traffic through the T3 drop off zone. Insane.

I don't envy you or Wickers, Tony it must be very frustrating with some of the d**** on the road. Just started snowing in Surrey again. -9 this morning with the inside screen of the car Frozen :roll:

Thats the worst thing, how badly the other clowns drive. I have decided that people who drive in fog with no lights on are one of the lowest possible life forms.
