TK Maxx are really cheap and have some good past season jackets and sallopettes. Hope this helps!

I have managed to pick up a few bargains on ebay. There are people who are going skiing for the first time that buy all the gear and then don't want to go again. There are also people who change their ski outfits everytime they go. So you can often find stuff that has hardly been used.

Last week I picked up a pair of Degre 7 sallo's for GBP30 they are as good as new, in fact if they had a label on them I would think they were.

Snowboarding gear is baggier than skiing gear...That's all I know! lol

I tried on a pair of sallos last week, given that my current pair have 60 weeks experience. They have a distictive errm, gluwein, gulashsuppe, zipfer,rotwein hue. At GBP30, they were obviously class gear. That's my current ones. The ones I tried on were GBP250, and they were not as good as mine. I feel 80 weeksa coming on......

My ski jacket is White Rock and is still as new after about 12 trips/washes/Nikwaxes. I ski but really feel comfortable in boarder pants. Used to wear my son's cast offs but now buy proper ladies boarder pants. Have just replaced my old ones (Tog 24) with No Fear ones from Sports Direct - reduced from GBP99.99 to GBP29.99. Tried TKMaxx but nothing I felt comfortable in.

My ski jackets last for years the reason ....... I wear them for skiing not for Apres ski or wearing through our winter. 8)

My next point is I brought some cheap sallo's last year "Dare2be" don't bother they are rubbish, only wore them for three days and a small hole developed at the bottom of one leg.
I tend to buy the cheaper sallo's as I tend to get too hot in the more expensive ones, but on this occasion I brought too cheap.

I normally buy all my gear online including Jackets, Amazon for my last jacket at GBP80 and about GBP35 for Sallos, I normally buy the Sallos from skiwear4less have always got a good service from both parties.

TK Maxx has been kind to me in the past. I have bought Nike, Bailo, Alpine Lowe and Columbia gear in there, as well as Reusch gloves, all at greatly reduced prices. But you do have to visit a few times and sift through some rubbish.

TK Maxx do have a lot of Trespass and Dare2be. This is pretty much low and of the market, but for GBP100 you will kit yourself out with sallos and a jacket for sure. Not the nicest stuff by a long way, IMO.

Ian, my guess is that the hole was created by you pulling your sallos over your ski boots.....several pairs of mine have done the same. Its very annoying, and not necessarily a problem with any certain brand of sallos.

Firstly, in thirty four years of skiing I have never had a pair of sallo's rip or hole in that area, mainly because I buy a size larger than I need as I do like a bit of room so normally my sallo's are not a over tight fit at the bottom of the leg. So in my humble opinion I really do think it is a quality issue, I paid 19.99 + pp for them so not a lot lost but then again you do get what you pay for. I have found in the past about GBP35 buys me a good pair of sallo's, so I have got my eye on a pair of 5 seasons which are on offer for GBP30. :shock:

Wouldn't a hole at the bottom of the leg be likely to be caused by a sharp ski edge or boot clip?

This is what I was getting at, as I do not believe that Ian's problem is a quality one. The reason I say this is because I have 3 pairs of sallos which I currently use: North Face, Nike, and Quiksilver. I understand what you were getting at, but it is defiantly a quality issue, to understand that you have to realise that I have to ski with a wide stance because that is the only way I will get my bases flat to the snow.

I have to disagree Ian. Stance is irrelevant - you can slit your sallos easily when picking up or carrying your skis, and my boot clips seem to do any quality sallos a fair bit of damage.
I do agree that for GBP20 you probably haven't got the best ones in the world, but I don't think the quality of material can be the issue here if its holes.

Stance is relevant as you are less likely to catch the boot area on sharp turn, and how on earth can
you damage your sallo's taking off your skis or picking them up, the only way I can see that happening is if you detach the binding by using the base of your other ski, I spend too much time preparing my bases to do that. So I don't really know where you are coming from on this one ??

The best pair of ski trousers (not salopettes as they didn't have the Farmer Giles bib) I ever had were made by SOS. Lasted really well, superbly made, sad when I outgrew them!

Now I have a pair of trousers from Columbia for very. very cold weather and a lighter pair made by Rossignol. Both are excellent, neither cost me more than GBP75 within the last 18 months or so.

Yeah I've found Columbia a good make. Hammered mine, sliding down slopes on my backside and everything. They're still good as new. :thumbup:

I didn't know it damaged skis either, taking them off like that. I'm sure I've seen ski instructors doing it, and my daughter always does it in our group ski lessons and no-one's told her off yet (or made her stand on the naughty step). I use a ski stick myself, but it's just because I find that easier.

Ian - do you think it could be moths, or perhaps you've been welding wearing your sallos? :lol:

The cheap sallos I got from TKMax for GBP30 seem to be fine. I can't see the point of spending loads of money on them.

Gotta agree with TK Maxx too. I've bought stuff there and had no probs. Can't go wrong if you're either on a budget or just don't fancy spending loads.

I now have 4 pairs of ski trousers :twisted: I've tried cheap pairs and they are naff. It feels so much nicer to wear a decent pair that fit really well. So I got a few more :D

It does not wreck them but can cause damage to the bases ...... The idea Emma is to have a smooth base e.g. minimal scratches to cut down on friction underneath the ski, which then lets you ski a bit quicker.
I wouldn't worry too much there will be loads of pep's on here who do a similar thing thinking it's cool.

I've scoured the dark depths of my mind and am pretty sure I've never walked across a car park in my skis :wink:

This is going from bad to worse! I've upset Alistair, Ian has won the debate (I'm still gonna be right about the resort snow) now you too Trencher! :shock:

Right ok I'll never undo my bindings with my ski again. But I need a substitute that my OH can't do instead. Come on help me out he's whipping my butt... just one little thing...

Broom, you are right, Surfanic are a really good brand and what a lot of people don't is that they are really technically good. I bought myself and the kids a couple from Two Seasons, they still have some of last years stuff in the sale. Shredz is a good one too.

My Mrs has had Surfanic sallos in the past, they were ok, and did the job. But hardly at the 10 end on the stylometer

I've got some really good base layers: Kalenji. They were from Decathlon and were only GBP7 and are designed for running or cycling, but they are perfect for skiing.
I have also bought a couple of merino base layers in TK this season for GBP10 each, result!
