Why is Lapland so cheap?

Just been going through a brochure to see what's about. Lapland ski hols seem cheap in comparison to other places with most being in the low GBP400's. Is this because it's not considered a 'proper' ski country? I noticed that the actual skiing is limited compared to many other countries/resorts. Perhaps it's more of an all round snow experience country rather than being strongly geared towards skiing? It doesn't have a category on here under Ski Resorts which maybe says a lot.

Any thoughts?

Emma,
I should imagine that if you want to see Santa, its up at the top of the must do list however, if you want to ski/board then it is very limited in relation to the well known resorts. :-)

Thanks Alistair, I do get that impression. Great if skiing is one of several activities you want to do whilst there (obviously including Santa :wink: !) but not necessarily for skiing alone. Hmmm... can I make the compromise? There's a cracking deal on a little catered chalet with lovely sounding meals, husky rides, skidooing, the northern lights... hmmm. Fair old walk to the ski bus though :? It's probably all academic anyway. MrEvs would promptly poke my eyes out if I proposed diluting his skiing opportunities :lol:

Lapland/Finland.....if you're a skier I think you'll find it dreadfully limited. Plenty to do away from the skiing, or you can do cross country, but if you want a ski holiday, look elsewhere. Its also very very cold.
Friends of mine went there last year, first time skiing, and they are going back again this season. I have suggested they look elsewhere once they have got to grips with the basics.

As the future Mrs 11 has a 11 month contract in Finland I think I am gonna give it a blast for a long weekend. I quite fancy Levi to see what it's like. If nothing else I bet they know how to have a bevvy or twelve. It opens next weekend.

Its also very very cold.

Tony_H - Aha, that explains the heated thermal suits they give you. I just thought it was a bit OTT for the wimps :oops: Doh!

Tino_11 - could you let me know what it's like? If I remember rightly one of the resorts has a respectable amount of skiing. Will have to check the brochure again to find out if I made that up or not.

Definitely coming to the conclusion it's not a ski hol, but more a general winter fun type thing. Made the mistake of showing my Sis-in-law in the meantime though. Now she wants to go see the reindeer :roll:

I have been to Lapland the last 3 years at Ruka. At face value it appears to be cheaper than say Austria. But when you get there..........so expensive, the most expensive place I have ever been. Having said that I will go back again.
The skiing is limited, its not mountains but fells. I can uually get by some days without a lift pass. There is so much extra to do, husky sledging, reindeer sleighing, ice karting, snowmobiling, nightime excursions to see Northern lights and visit Russia, ice floating, snow shoeing, but all these things cost a lot of money. About 50 euros per person per activity. Beer and wine is 12 euros per glass. Evening meal for two will be about 100 euros.
But as I said, I love it and will def be going back. Oh and the temps when we were there in January were -35 degrees.

12 Euros per glass, so thats GBP22 a pint, so 12 pints, Tino is er, GBP262! Per night.

Wow. Thanks RoseR. Lapland has suddenly slid much further down the list :shock: Still sounds like fun, but I'll wait until I have more money to spare! And -35... yes Tony_H I think it's fair to describe that as very very cold!

Hmmm, that does seem a bit excesive. Duty free Vodka may help.

Its more of a winter fun holiday than a serious ski holiday. It suits us as we want the log cabin in the woods experience, own sauna log fires etc. Plus we ski and board and like Xcountry. It can be done a bit cheaper if you HB at a hotel and dont get involved in so many activities. Plus try and buy duty free alcohol. They have Alco shops which are very expensive, as its controlled so the only cheap alcohol you can buy is beer and cider in the supermarkets. Supermarket food is a lot more expensive than this country but not bad.
You can make lunch a bit cheaper also by taking some sausages/rolls/breads etc and toasting them on many of the firepits about the resorts.
As for the temps it varies day by day and providing you have good gear and layers its fine. Although did have frostbite last year from a snowmobile safari.

I'm with you on the log cabin/general winter fun theme. That's what appeals to me. The catered chalet deal is sounding better by the minute as other than extra drinks outside meals (this is where the duty free could kick in), and excursions we'd have nothing to pay. Conclusion - not a ski holiday, but definitely a fun holiday and one for the future. And we'll definitely be taking advantage of the heated suits! 8) Happy days :D

Oh the suits are not heated suits, they are thermal suits you make your own heat and keep it in. Will try and post a few pics on this thread later on to-day for you
