What would be on your list?

As some of you may be aware, I am going to do a season in Morzine. I am so excited, there are only four weeks left until we go and I have started compiling a list of things that we should take with us like Marmite, Heinz beans, tea bags etc. We are driving so we have no baggage restrictions.

If you were going for six months what would be on your list?

We won't need to take any household items it's all there.

I was thinking more along the lines of things I will need to buy that are cheaper in England or unavailable in France.

Once a week a drive down to the nearest large town "Cluses" where you will find more or less brit prices, there will be some variation but last time I visited it was 50/50, some products cheaper others not, but you will certainly not be paying ski resort prices.

Absolutely, but there are some things which will always be more expensive like English tea bags and six months without a decent cuppa is uneccessary. Not for me, I don't drink tea, but I couldn't go without my marmite on toast.

Thank you for your input Ian.

Re:What would be on your list?

Marmite would be 1st on my list too, but I see you've got that one!

What I thought of was painkillers, medication.

A few years ago in Chamonix my son had a throat infection.
We weren't prepared and had to buy some painkillers. What we got were some kind of minty chewy ones which cost almost Euro4.

Things like that are so much cheaper in our supermarkets and recognisable too.

Have a great time, my nephew has done the last 3 seasons in Morzine and loves it.

If it was me, I'd need my French grammar and dictionary, and about a hundredweight of my particular muesli brand.

We found an English shop somewhere, possibly Bourg St Maurice, selling all the things demanded by expats, but they were very expensive.

Maybe a French cookery book, written in English?

We never seem able to find any cheddar cheese for our sauces, but we generally make do with whatever alternative hard cheese they have available.

Ally

How about a bottle or two of that Nikwax (other makes are probably available) re-waterproofing stuff for washing your salopettes and jacket with? If you're skiing loads my guess is you'll need to re-do them a few times while you're out there and it's cheaper than buying new gear.

Taking a car, I would take guitar, banjo, oil paints ~ you can't take these on a flight, so hence the restriction to watercolours....I digress. Loads of tools. French grammar/tuition books, even if you are fairly fluent. Loads of good music.

With apologies to the long term J2skiers, who have heard my stories before,....all true.....

In my first season, heading south in my old Transit van, en-route to Niederau. I gradually picked up my 5 co-passengers, none of whom I had met before. We called in at the cash and carry, easy, 6 people, 100 nights, 600 meals.
Thats 200 tins of Irish Stew, 200 tins of cooked chicken, 200 tins of Spam. 300 packets of Smash powdered potato, 300 packets of Rice. A few 5 kgm cans of powdered soup, oxtail was the favourite, it had some taste.
On day 2 of our arrival, it was discoveredI had bought packets of Rice Pudding instead of Patna rice. We had no spare money, and it had to be eaten.....

While adjustable edging tools aren't the best, one would probably be be good for your needs. Something like http://www.jonsskituning.co.uk/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,137/category_id,15/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,72/

You would need to figure out what angle the side edges of your skis are (it may very between skis) by using a marker pen on the edge, then lightly passing the tool over, and adjusting the angle until you can clean the marker off the whole edge. If you are getting your skis tuned before you go, it would be easier to have them all set at the same angle, and then buy a single angle bevel guide. If your edges have been set, you may only need to maintain them. A course (100 grit), and a medium (200 grit) diamond files would do that.

It might be worth while having your skis hot boxed before you go. This will go a long way to help stop the bases drying out. You would then only need to top up the wax every two or three days http://www.jonsskituning.co.uk/content/view/50/72/

It would be well worth while investing in a waxing iron. It could be a cheap one. Waxing to just maintain the bases is very easy, and cheap. Just crayon the wax over the base, pass the iron along the skis (with just enough speed to melt the wax), and brush off. There will be so little wax on the base, you won't need to scrape. I would get a fine brass brush. Finish up with a plastic scouring pad. Unless you need to go fast, this will keep your bases sliding well. Universal wax works just fine.
You can melt the wax into the base with a hair dryer, but an iron is faster.

That kind of maintenance shouldn't take more than about fifteen minutes per pair of skis. You can do it on the floor (an old piece of carpet is perfect), if a bench is not available.

Some thin work gloves will protect your hands from the occasional slip.

I would only use a spray/wipe on wax if desperate.

Unlike Trencher, I really like using Zardoz Notwax. A quick wipe over, with their pocket puck does seem to keep the wax on the bases longer :D

I wax my skis in a different way too. I drip the wax on, iron in, then iron again with a piece of kitchen paper under the sole plate of the iron. This absorbs most of the excess wax. I don't have a brass brush, I use a nylon bristle kitchen brush for the grooves 8)

I use the same brush to scrub my spuds )

Re:What would be on your list?

Not so much a 'what to take' tip but something I found quite handy in resort....

When you get there, make the most of the first few quiet weeks in resort to get to know other seasonaires and locals.

There are freebies to be had out there and its good to know the right people. And of course its always nice to have something to offer in return.

As I was working in a chalet we often had extra dinner to feed people that had given the odd lesson/ski tuning/free beer.

Its quite surprising how everyone helps each other.

Re:What would be on your list?

Whether to, and how much to detune depends on what type of skiing you are doing. For carving you might not detune at all.

Once you have detuned the tips, and tails, Maintaining the edges with a diamond stone will likely not resharpen them. If you detuned each time you did maintenance sharpening, you might end up with the edges too rounded off. The best way would be to just feel the edge, to see if it needs detuning or not.

I beg to differ. I don't believe that it is necessary to detune the tips of modern skis at all. Mind you I don't suppose I could be described as a fairly nippy skier. It all depends on the context.
