Snow Report Rant

I'm afraid I'm a self confessed web cam and snow report addict, and its getting worse the season approaches.

My excitement peaked a few days ago as flurries of snow arrived across the Alps with supposedly more on the way. However, with every passing visit (take your pick as to which site) the depth forecasts diminish rapidly.

Now, I appreciate that its still early days and that the white stuff will wax and wane, but its really depressing when one day there's supposed to be 13cm on the way and the next its down to 2cm. :x

Are they just teasing us? I've never seen it the other way round!

It is just all down to fluctuating temps at the moment, as we get more into winter the snow may just stay for a tad longer 8)

Maybe it's like dieters and weighing themselves - don't check too often as it fluctuates daily! Limit yourself to once a week...

Re:Snow Report Rant

Unless you are mountaineering, it's a waste of time studying snow reports so early in the season [Apart from Scotland that is !]

Re:Snow Report Rant

Agreed Macgregor, and it is pretty much a waste of time here in Scotland too. Agreed, only to a certain extent.
Snow reports are an indicator, much as weather reports are in the UK. So you know to wear a T-shirt, and take a jacket!
Rather than snow reports, I look at mountain temperatures. Not only will a cold mountain hold the snow, it will enable the start of artificial snow making. In most places, this is programmed to start as soon as there is a stable cold temp. If you get a good base of natural/artificial, and then a few big dumps, good piste machine management ensures that the snow will be long lasting.

Re:Snow Report Rant

All of the locals here in Les Gets say, whenever there is early snow, that it is a good thing. It will cool the ground, and when the real snow arrives it will stick sooner. Keep faith - winter is coming, but it's not here yet!

Re:Snow Report Rant

OK. I'm calm now. Webcams are getting whiter and the snow reports are saying there's more on the way this weekend. If they start adjusting them now though I'll not be happy. I've got snow fever in a bad way. Damn those snow teases.
