Campervan ski trip?

Hi Guys,

Myself and a couple of mates are toying with the idea of taking the campervan down to France for some skiing in Jan 11.

Haven't even got as far as what resort as yet and I wondered if anyone here had done something similar before and could suggest where and why?

Any comments/suggestions(other than don't do it)please?

Are you talking VW camper? My first question would be do you know if your camper can make it that far and does the heating work. And of course you need to think about things like snow chains and all the other guff that goes with driving.

If I was you I think I'd be inclined to find a campsite in a valley (I don't actually know of any campsites in a ski resort that would be open in winter but there must be some) where there might be less snow and perhaps a bit more warmth. I know there's a campsite not far from Tignes/Val D'isere, and they are more valley based.

A friend of mine spent a whole season living out of a camper in Chamonix, fortunately for them there wasn't much snow in the valley that winter and they lived to tell the tale.

Most resorts that I have been to have had camper sites open,I think it is becoming more popular
driving the alps in a camper.

As you go up the Gondolla from Brides Les Bains to Meribel there is a car park right next to the second Station Les Allues i think that has a lot of camper vans there. Some live in them all season.
I also seen those camper vans Jonah! I was there in January.
The idea is very good - works out much cheaper i'd imagine than booking some accommodation - or maybe not.. Work out the fuel costs etc - other bummf that will come with it. IE - Snow chains as stated above, insurance abroad etc - and do make sure the heaters work.. Especially for every night you're there..

It does sound interesting though - I'd like to give it a shot myself sometime!
