Your poor sod, that is bad news  Only your consultant can give you the all clear, and you may have to be prepared to wait until the New Year. Perhaps static cycling might help you to keep up your fitness without stressing the newly knitted bone.

An interweb skiers forum is not the place for medical advice )

I've heard it said that fractured bones heal to become stronger, which is something positive. Don't know how long that takes.
Here's to a speedy return.

Re:broken legs are rubbish!

You poor thing Rossyhead.

I think it's very difficult to be sure when you're likely to be fit enough to ski again. But if I was you I'd definitely wait a bit before booking anything, at least until after the screw comes out in 4 weeks time. I expect you will need physio as well after the break has healed (usually about 6 weeks). My daughter broke her arm and it was about 3 months before she had the full use of it again, my toe only took about 5 weeks, but my shoulder took about 9 months.

Realistically, I think you might be safer thinking about Easter instead of Christmas to go ski-ing.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

Ally

Re:broken legs are rubbish!

That's a bummer,Rossy, 2 winters ago, my OH broke her leg in October. She was in plaster for 6wks, and skiing at New Year ~ in a fair bit of pain, and mostly on gentle slopes.

She was skiing again in late January, able to come down anything.

However, ~ this is only by way of encouragement, every incident is different. You have a good attitude to the Italian!

the best after a break is to go swimming, so after they take the screw out and you are starting to recover swimming will do the best for you

Rossyhead - Ouuuccchhh

Looks exactly like the same scar I saw once from someone being knocked off a motorbike. You seem to be healing far more quickly though. They had a plaster on for months, and the screw wasn't taken out. I can't believe you've been trying to squeeze it into your boot already you complete nutcase

Fingers crossed for you.

Im off to Italy Ally on boxing day but if I cant ski i will pretty much be drinking while watching the world cup so not a bad alternative! docs say I should be able to ski though, maybe just ski to the blues!

havent actually tried the boot yet-i think ill leave that a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down and stitches to come out

this is it now though so it has got better!

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2387732&l=c6dff2f73e&id=223000559

Hi Rossyhead,
I'm glad you've got somewhere booked, and you've got a back up plan just in case!

Your leg looks a lot better in the second photo than in the first (the stitches have healed really well), although it still looks quite swollen.

I went on a ski holiday 2 weeks after I broke my shoulder, knowing that I wouldn't be able to ski, and it was rather frustrating, but not nearly as bad as I'd thought because there were still things I could do.

Best of luck, and take care of your leg :D

Ally

Is it your ankle? Fibula fractures are generally painful but not too significant unless it's the ankle.

As your screws out you should be fine if not as well conditioned as you might want.

Re:broken legs are rubbish!

it was a spiral fracture of the fibula-goes down the bone and then across the ankle, unfortunately had ligament damage too across the bottom of the bone and inbetween the fib and tib. Had my ski boots on yesterday though and was comfy enough so hopefully christmas will be more fun than initially thought!! hasnt stopped me booking my 3rd holiday of the year for easter too!!!

You'll be fine - just make sure your insurance company is aware that you are OK to go (run it by your Dr) and then let the insurance company know.

That way they can't weedle out of paying up should you get unlucky & hurt yourself again.
