Cheap week away, anywere in Italy.

Hi,

I have finally been able to book some holiday for this December and really fancy a week away in Italy. I have never skied here before and wondered if anyone has found some bargains. Any help would be great.

Well I would personally say leave it until the last minute, assuming you aren't going over Christmas or New Year then you should bag a bargain just before you go, see where the best snow is and then do some TO hunting.

Thats what I'd do anyway, others might possibly disagree.

Try Livigno, I know they do a free lift pass deal for early/late season and there is plenty accommodation, if your interested PM me and I'll recommend some accommodation to suit your budget 8)

I might be wary of theearly season snow conditions in Italy. This is a generalisation, of course, but when I looked at the historical averages, Italy did not really register.
I think it is because the snow streams generally arrive from a northerly direction, and therefore, marginal conditions would reach Austria and France first. Switzerland would receive a good share because of the generally higher altitudes. So, for that reason, I would agree that it makes sense to leave your choice until the snow arrives.

Never been disapointed in the Dolomites (exept for the monster queues in Madonna Di C)

Livigno and Bormio had plenty of snow to 1200m last year from the 5th December-Bormio is higher but Livigno has more pistes

Hi, as a beginner you will love Corvara, which is in the Dolomites in Italy. Great runs for novices, great place, food, nightlife etc. should be able to pick up a deal if you leave it last minute.

My point is that you cannot predict a good year. Even on the Dave Mac "This is going to be the Greatest ski year ever scale" which, by the way, gets better every year, when there is no pressure to book, it doesn't make make sense to do so.
Patrick has a point, the snow history in the Dolomites is good, but then the resort levels are high. Having said that, in Jan 2001, the Sella Ronda consisted of a strip of artificial snow set amid green hills. That can happen any year.
If you are blessed with the flexibility to wait, you can maximise the conditions and minimise the cost.
