Hi all,

Long time no speak, how is everyone? Been too busy planning this winters holidays.

Who's already booked their trips then?

I'm off to Tignes in December (12th-19th) and to Val Thorens at the end of Feb (26th Feb - 5th Mar)

Can't wait, though I've got some serious fitness training to do before then! 20 Weeks and counting!

Also running a trip to St Anton in Jan but not going on that one.

Booked for Schiwelt at New Year. No doubt a couple of trips to Niederau. Considering a few weeks touring on the Kitzbuhel AllStar Card.

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

Ahhh. Good to be back and talking about sking, snow and wintery stuff in general. Haven't been able to face coming on here until now- it just seemed too far off.

I'm in the process of pricing up at the moment- thinking of DIY rather than a package. After only 1 week back in the er, bindings(?)I'm not all that confident in making the arrangements myself but I'll give it a bash if it saves me a few quid.

Likely to be going back to Andorra becasue it seems cheaper than other places over the Xmas hols.

And for those of you who gave me pointers about buying some boots, cheers for the advice- I got a lovely pair of technica dragons and I'm wearing them now- only to break them in a bit though- nothing kinky. :D

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

Hi,
I've finally managed to book our apartment in Courchevel for Feb half-term. It's 1020 euros for 4 people for the week (cleaning is extra though).

Going DIY I reckon the first thing to do is book the flights/train/coach and then the accommodation, followed by the transfers, and finally the lessons and ski hire. Lift passes can be done last because I've never heard of a resort running out of lift passes!

If you're going DIY in Europe then the price of the lift passes will vary according to the euro/pound exchange rate, so it's best to get them when the pound is up and the euro is down. Sometimes they're cheaper than with the TO's and sometimes not. I suppose it all depends on what the exchange rate was when the TO's set the prices.

And you need to buy your insurance as soon as you've paid out for something - like flights. It's no good waiting until the last minute to get it, in case you have to cancel for some reason. It's also supposed to be better to pay with a credit card, in case the various companies go bust.

Ally

Bandit,
I am totally confused, what do you mean?

If I book my ski train and then phone and book my insurance, how can anything go wrong?

Admittedly, the last 2 years I've bought annual ski insurance, but that's only because I've been a bit greedy and booked 2 ski holidays per year.

Ally

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

Thanks for the advice. At the risk of stoking the insurance debate fire I think i'll sort it out as i book the holiday- ie on the same day. Hopefully that will be the best compromise!

Sauze d'oulx seems to be coming up quite reasonable. Any reviews?

Other than that Arinsal is looking to be a likely destination again- DIY this time! I've priced up to about GBP1200 all in for the two of us. This includes apartment, flights, trans, ski school, lift pass and ski hire. Its the ski school which kills the price but we still have a lot to learn! That said the odd private lesson may suffice but ski school is good fun as well and my OH still isn't confident when tackling new runs without an instructor.

Right, back to looking for deals.

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

I am not sure if Bandit is correct on this, although the Bandito is almost always right! It does raise a point though. I have kept my annual Travel Insurance with the same company for about 6/7 years. They do not bump up the price at renewal time. Moreover, on the one occasion when I made a claim, they paid out without any questions. I imagine that when you submit a claim, they can see on the screen strong repeat business, with little claim history. They may then take a view that the claim generally will have merit.

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

Insurance: If you are renewing an annual policy with no gap, then you have continuity, and should be covered. If you are buying a new travel policy, then you should check the small print as I've never seen one that will cover retrospective expenditure, as the risk may have changed since purchase. If you want retrospective cover, talk to an Insurance Broker f2f.

I learned this stuff when Snowcard pulled my cover for 1 knee and any conditions vaguely(remotely) connected, as I was having an MRI Scan. They seemed a bit miffed that they were obliged to continue cover when I gave them my flight dates...which were waaay back  Not been a customer since! Bit shortsighted of them really on a GBP200 annual policy, especially as my consultant's summing up consisted of these 3 words "You're getting old", and declared no treatment needed :D

If in any doubt talk to the insurer 1st.

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

ClipperJon,
GBP600 total per person sounds a pretty good price to me :D
It's about half what we had to pay in Courchevel Feb half-term for self-catering. I reckon you'd probably get something cheaper last minute, but then I wouldn't like a last minute holiday myself. I like to plan everything ahead.

What worries me about insurance, is that, as far as I know, you have to pay up front for whatever it is, and then you get the money back later from your insurers (assuming they agree to the claim). My bank has just cut my overdraft allowance right down to practically nothing, and I don't have a credit card, only a debit card, so I would have to have the money in my current account, just in case I had an accident or whatever.

What's the maximum anyone has ever had to pay out on the spot during the holiday for helicopter rescue or whatever?

Ally

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

Never thought about having to pay up front- I bet helicopter doesn't come cheap either! Definitely worth thinking about though. (Un)Fortunately I have plenty of credit cards.

GBP600 each all in is the best I've found so far but I must admit I got slightly bored of Arinsal last year so it might have to be Sauze this time. Just found GBP660 all in- but hotel describes itself as basic and lively - sounds ominous!

You'd like to think so woudln't you? However, having worked in the general insurance market, and having friends who still do, I can assure you this is not the case. Only claims which have been DECLINED previously flag up. Many people jump from insurer to insurer year after year to save a few quid, and therefore often either forget to or choose not to disclose any previous claims history, if there is one.
Each individual claim is dealt with on its merits these days, although the down side to that is that the length of time and the trouble involved in making a claim puts many potential fraudsters off.
Sadly, I am now on the receiving end of this with my bank's gold account travel insurance (free with the account) as they are being a pain in paying out the genuine claim for my damaged skis. My guess is that they hope I will give up and discontinue with the claim.

People who renew year in year out should be given some kind of loyalty bonus, in the same way you do with car insurance IMO.

It's about insurers taking back their umbrella's at the 1st hint of rain. From your example, the timeline for your OH's claim is clear, it's an unforseeable event after the insurance was purchased. Try booking a flight 6 months in advance, buying travel insurance a week before travel and then make a claim for cancellation costs, and see what happens.

I have appealed it, but apparently it has to go to the underwriters (whoever they are!).
We didn't have to pay a penny up front and I have no idea how long it took the insurers to pay. He had the treatment, we gave the insurance details and a few days later went home. A week or so later we were sent a bill and I forwarded it to the insurers who said not to worry and then we didn't here anything else about the claim again.

Thanks Snowbandit :D
That's very reassuring. Maybe it's just the rescue services who sometimes demand payment up front, whereas the medical people are okay as long as one is insured.

I am planning on double insuring again this year, and buying the French carre neige insurance with the lift pass, in the hope that they will trust their own insurers and not demand a pile of money off me should we be so unfortunate as to need rescuing.

Ally

I'm hoping to have a long weekend myself at the beginning of September and again in Oct/Nov then onto the winter propper.

Should be able to get some slope time in January and then for the last couple of weeks of the season in April .

On a different note, if anyone is planning to be in Bourg-Saint-Maurice or Les Arcs anytime , and want to see a really good live band ( they play a good 2 - 3 hour set of top covers ) try and see Mr Orange ( Monsieur Orange ) at the Bazoom Riders Cafe/bar in BsM , you can check the live band dates on their cafes website.....it's a great night.

........oh well back to work now and , and daydreams of the alps :D

jon

Kate, do you (or anybody else) drive to ski resorts regularly or have done before?
How do you find it? Is it worth the cost of fuel and time compared to flights and resort transfers?

I've considered maybe driving to a ski resort in Europe from here (Sunny Scotland) one year - mainly because it does sound interesting, driving through the countries and all the mountains - would be great experience and all of that scenery.. yes please!

Just wondering how the cost works out in comparison to flying + buses? :)

As for the apartment - well found. Nice price for the 3 of you!

I agree with Ian. Motoring costs should include the little things like ~ extra for insuring additional drivers ~extra for Euroopean insurance cover, Typically +GBP110 ~ extra to obtain European breakdown recovery ~ a set of chains.
Some years I do travel from Scotland. If I am planning to stay for say 3 weeks. This year, I am considering the Rosyth/Zeebrugge ferry, then a 9 hour drive to Tirol.

How about the extra cost of staying overnight in a hotel en route somewhere? I should think it would be pretty difficult to drive all in one go from Scotland to a ski resort.

Ally

Re:2010-11 Winter Plans

It's working out significantly cheaper for us this time because it's half term. We got European breakdown cover for GBP68 when we drove to France last month, we've booked hotels en route for 35 euros per night (yes very cheap and cheerful but we'll be there for 7 hours max each way!) and the tunnel is GBP138. It'll be half the price of the cheapest flights and transfers I could find.

Normally I would fly but we had no choice on dates this time. Bloody kids.

Insurance aside(!) we're all booked for Sauze for a week over Xmas. I dont know if I'm allowed to promote companies on here but I'll take the risk because it may help a few people out. We (OH and myself) booked with Nielson- Xmas week, B+B Hotel with transfers, 6 day ski school, ski hire (excl boots) and lift passes for GBP1300 all in. I sincerely hope nobody shoots me down in flames here because i think it was a great deal!
Trouble is that I'm packed and ready to go! Only 4 months to wait.

My group have just booked out a newly built chalet in Alpe d'Huez for 1st week in March. Sounds rather plush with its own hot tub and sauna.

Thankfully I got to test my new CEM-fitted boots in Hemel yesterday and they worked a treat. My technique is very very bad with two years gone since I last saw a ski slope so could be an interesting first few days but at least they'll not be ibuprofen fuelled.
