skiing as a couple

Hi, Me and my other half always go sking with a big group, but this season it will just be the two of us. We usually book it all independantly to save money, but this doesn't seem to be working out too well as everything seems quite expensive when there are only two pepole; can anyone recommend some cheap deals/ self catering accommodation in Morzine/ Avoriaz?
Thanks!

Re:skiing as a couple

We too, usually ski in a group, but when we go just the two of us, we enjoy an organised trip, in that we always get to meet a lot of new people. The best price opportunities for two people often are lat minute bookings ~ provided that you are not too limited in a choice of airports.

We always ski as a couple, we are planning on booking last minute this year which can work out very cheaply.

We usually set ourselves a budget for the week and then do lots of research with all the TOs.

Re:skiing as a couple

When we ski as a couple we go catered, lot less hassle and in my opinion cheaper, you only eat out once. You also have the choice of ski hosting if you want to ski with a group, we have gone independent, Ski Amis / Sixt Alpine Chalet as well as with a TO Silverski / Ski World

Not really been one for big group holidays, I like to spend quality family time when I am on hols hence I'm not a great fan of apres ski much prefer a good restaurant a chalet, log fire and a bottle of plonk.
But I do prefer DIY hols much more fun...

I always manage to get good value holidays, half price equipment ( I never rent), discounted clothing and find a bar with a happy hour.
Lift pass is the only thing I cant get cheap!
I have also found I have been spending quite a bit more money when skiing in France, both because it is more expensive across the board for everything, and also because of the exchange rate.
Skiing does not have to be an expensive hobby/holiday.

Re:skiing as a couple

How about some prices from everyone? How much do you budget for?

As I've said before, we spent GBP1100 per person on our last ski holiday, not including groceries we bought for our self-catered apartment. But this did include lessons and ski hire and it was Feb half-term in Courchevel.

I would have said myself it would be difficult to do it for less than GBP1000 per person per holiday if you were totally honest about everything - like adding in the cost of gear (new ski boots, socks, jackets whatever) and incidentals like airport parking, food and drink bought during the holiday etc.

I think ski holidays are very expensive - but I'm still going on one

Ally

Well I have never spent anything like that for a ski holiday to be honest. Although I have just spent GBP900 on going club med to St Moritz, but thats all food, drink, lift passes and lessons as well.
I have been paying around GBP500 for catered chalets, and have found deals to get lift passes for GBP10 in ADH and half price in St Anton, so make it GBP600 and thats everything covered.
Without causing offence, if I paid GBP1100 for a ski holiday self catering, I would be seriously upset.

Re:skiing as a couple

This year costs GBP960 includes flights, food, booze and transfers which works out GBP320 per head, I still have Little W's lessons and all of our lift passes to fork out for so if you shop around there are still some good bargains to be had.........I think I might be able to make a hell of a dent in the chalets booze budget

No I have not given up driving, normally I would not worry too much about costs, but with
a new start up business I'm trying the sensible option and control my costs, by doing this I might just be able to run to ski holiday number two in March.

Re:skiing as a couple

My better half hasn't taken to skiing (well, she says she will ski but not all day and not everyday...what a waste!) so this year it's just me and the kids. This year is costing me GBP1500 for all 3 of us with EVERYTHING included.

Skiing is a damn expensive holiday but so much more satisfying than decomposing on a cruise liner or on the beach.

Currently there are offers on such as half price lift passes, buy one get one free ski rental and free child spaces as the holiday companies are trying to tempt us to book early. I have fallen into that trap but feel I have a fab deal ! Do shop the net in the unexpected places and the deals are there ! )

Just remember to add at least GBP60 per day for a bite to eat at lunch time on the hill as there is nowhere else to go and they charge whatever they like
