Well done! Do a good job, and you will open up future opps. And then maximise your skiing, it is the best chance you will have to get to your highest level.

Is the whole of J2Ski on the move? New jobs, new businesses, a brewery, it's all happening.

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

2010 is a good year for all of us it seems Dave Mac!

Anyways, minor question to those of you who have done a winter season working abroad - or even to those of you who know about such things..

I am wanting to take my mobile with me, obviously.. Although I phoned my service provider (Orange) and they offer no holiday plans or anything of the sort thus rendering my phone useless abroad for 5 months.

Does anyone know if it'd be a better idea to buy a sim card when I get to Austria and stick with an Austrian network for the time i'm there? It's merely to text back home - nothing else.
Or should I fish around in the UK for a service provider who can offer me a working sim abroad for the period?

Thanks guys! :D

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

Well, Orange does operate in Austria. It almost certainly will be cheaper to get a local sim card. But~ is it not the case that you will be supplied with a mobile for your work operation? You can check on private usage.
Do you know which resort you will be in?
Your current mobile will operate from Austria, and text costs have fallen rapidly.
I just used to send a post card once a month to my parents!

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

Hmm I see.. I have heard nothing of being issued with a mobile for work use and as for the resort - I have not yet been told which resort I will be placed it. They sent my contract out earlier today and I will recieve it over the next coming days.

Post cards will work for sure and I intend to do this every month also but I would like to send a text every now and again for some instant communication!

Have you worked in a ski resort before?

Thanks for the info Dace Mac, much appreciated!

I have had four seasons in Austria, predating mobiles by some decades! Hence the postcards. In my second seaason, I took my girlfriend with me, it cut the frequency of evening outings, but I saved a lot on stamps!

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

Ahh nice one - The more I think about doing this season the more I get excited and the more I just want to get out there now.. It's immense.

Unfortunately my girlfriend has to stay here in sunny Scotland while i'm away as she's in 4th year of uni now so she can't find the time to come with.. Nor does she ski/snowboard so that doesn't help!

But still.. I want to experience working in a ski resort before I get too tied down with life in general - other jobs, houses etc :)

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

That is the same position that I was in, so after my first season ended, as I drove back, I collected my GF in London, and drove up to Scotland, briefly pausing to say Hi to my folks in Manchester, and to take the opportunity to steal several days worth of food.
My GF then was introduced to skiing on Cairngorm. The following winter, we both went for the season on Niederau. By the time we got there, I had totally mixed up the finances, so, erm, later that year we got married. Result, innit.

Except, that she now has a much better ski style than I do!

Life is hard on guys....

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

Ballie, congrats on the job. You'll have a blinder!

For the phone, stop off in a big city and go to a large electrical retailers (Media Mart or Saturn). You can pick up a crap hanset with local pay as you go SIM for about 30Euro. Beware however, you will need proof of address in Austria to register the SIM for security reasons. I am sure you could use the resort HQ. Then you can either dump the phone and put the SIM in yours or have two. You'll need one to keep up with the movements of your colleagues, and I mean out of working hour ;)

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

That's a nice story Dave Mac - Congratulations on building such a life - sounds awesome!
I am hopeful that one day I can get a pair of skis under my girlfriends feet and she takes well to it.. I'll get there!

And thank you Tino - I am familiar with Saturn electrical store, they have huge ones in Germany - been many times!

And Dave Mac - I can speak and understand fluent German - my mum is German and every year since I was as young as I can remember we have visited family over there and from that I have picked up so much and I also studied it in school to prove it on paper getting an A at Higher.

At the interview they also tested my German abilities by handing me a piece of paper with two paragraphs written on it in German and I had to translate.
The interviewer didn't know any German herself but she did have the same text translated in English infront of her and I managed the first paragraph just rolling it off the tounge and I could make out 3/4 of the second paragraph.
My weak points in German are reading and writing - I can do it, but not as well as what I can speak it and naturally, I don't know every single word in German so there were some words in the text that made the sentence but I couldn't translate.

I did turn and say to her that I couldn't translate some of it and told her why - speaking being my fluent side and she totally understood and was happy with my performance :)

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

Congrats on the job! It will be hard work but well worth it.

I would recomend you getting a sim card for your phone once you are out there. I went travelling last year and had both my UK and a sim card from whatever country I was in with me. Whilst it was a pain the reason being so that everyone back home could text me on my UK mobile and it doesn't cost them anymore than usual but I replied on the foreign sim card which was much cheaper for me.

The other thing for you, if you are taking a laptop or netbook, is to get Skype. Skype is the best invention for staying in contact when travelling. You can either make calls home for GBP0.01per min or (if you set it up) you can send texts for GBP0.08 and it shows your own mobile number. It will make life cheaper for your GF too...!

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

There is now a local (to the country you are in) phone number that you can call and then connect to the UK through skype so all you are paying for is the local call and I assume the nominal Skype charge. This is a new feature though and I haven't looked into how it works I will confess!

Can't help you on the iphone app but have to say that so long as you have a reasonable wifi connection I found skype works great through a laptop.

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

As much as the Skype idea sounds really good and all, but as Tino pointed out - it does have its drawbacks with not working very well for some people.

I've settled more for the MSN + Webcam option, MSN is very reliable and gives the same experience at the end of the day.. and it's entirely free.. Win win really!

Let's just hope the hotel has wifi.. If not, then i'll be looking into these internet anywhere contracts from the phone companies! Only like GBP5/month which seems reasonable - provided it actually works in Austria!

Re:Result from Interview for resort job..

If you get MSN working then Skype will work to and it if you have a webcam you can actually talk and see the person which, in my opinion, is preferable to typing a conversation....

I have to say that I used Skype in 18 different countries last year and only had problems on a handful of occasions.

We use Skype to talk to our son in America and its never been a problem, except when running things in the background on the computer or if the webcam is playing up.
If you are using msn messenger, you might as well use Skype as its a better screen etc.

Great news about the job! I'm very jealous, I chalet girled for several seasons and still miss it now (12 years later).

You will have an amazing time with plenty of time to ski/board/recover from the night before. Well I did anyway. Its hard work, but you will play hard too, and hopefully your GF will visit and you can introduce her to skiing!

Let us know where you're off to when you know.
