Long weekend - Where to go

Hi all,

Next January its my 40th and my darling wife has told me she'd pay for me to go away with the lads skiing :D

We're pretty clued up as skiers we've been a few times before but not that experienced to find something within a decent budget where we're used to going to Meribel as families and as you know its not cheap , so looking for somewhere relitivly cheap ei accomodation, food and of course beer so France is ruled out I reckon.... Any advice ?

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Come on guys/gals, there must be some great value resorts that you can recommend ??
There will probabley only be 4 or 5 of us aged between 38 - 45.. But we're all young at heart really !!
Narrowed the dates down to the last 2 weeks in January, why not Meribel ? Because 5-6 guys drinking beer at GBP7-8 a pint is not a cheap weekend !!

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Snapzzz and Stamford,
That chalet hotel I stayed in for the ski and board camp in Tignes last October specializes in short breaks as well as longer stays. They have their own bar too, but I don't know what their prices are like.

www.mountainsunltd.com

e.g. 3 night stay in chalet Melezes Tignes in January around GBP140 including meals and transfers from Geneva but not flights.

Ally

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Austria, beer under 3Euros. Soll or Ellmau on the Schiwelt is a good shout. Under 2 hours from Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck. 250km of skiing, and you can link with Kitsbuhle.

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Good question Charlie. Season before last, Admin & I skied from Hopfgarten to Going in a couple of hours, managing to get lost twice, (it is the world's worst piste map!)
From Soell, up the Hohe Slve, ski down, up the Zinsberg, down the Filzalm to Brixen. Gondola to Westendorf, Gondola to Kirchberg, Ski over to the Hahnenkamm.
Not that long in ski time, maybe half and hour, but Gondola transfer and queuing, ~ would not like to guess.

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Keep the sun on your right cheek, Ian, (on the way there), and yodel if you get stuck. Nothing will happen, but you will feel better.

On the transfer, I should add that I have been from Soell down into Brixen, and from Kirchberg over to KitZ, but I haven't done the link. The Gondolas are fairly new.

Re:Long weekend - Where to go

Stamford, if the Mrs is paying, you'll get better value for a week away and not a weekend.....in which case, Europe is your oyster.
I'd recommend Austria if you haven't already been, just because for a lads week you'll benefit from a better night life and cheaper beers generally.
Mayrhofen is a good shout, as is St Anton (albeit more costly) from the places I have been.
You might also like Sauze d'Oulx in Italy with the lads, great ski area often uncrowded, and good bars etc in the town.
Sauze and Mayrhofen are always available on cheap package deals.
