I am sooooooooo excited!!!

On sunday I filled out several applications for 'childrens activity staff' positions with various ski companies. I have already had a response from one company inviting me to an interview for the position of Resort childcare manager...Woo hoo!!!!!

I just feel the need to say it again...WOO HOO!!!!!!

If I'm correct in remembering your a teacher so great qualifications to do the job which is good news. As Pabs asked which resort is the job at?

Whats the short/long term plan? Living abroad 52 weeks a year or play it by ear?

Ally, the plan is to spend 6 months looking for a small business...If I can get a job for the season it will alleviate the hurry to sell the house. If i sell the house in the mean time that will be even better. :D

It might be a good idea to try managing a business, cafe or whatever, for someone else before you actually buy one.

I cleaned holiday cottages for several years before I built/converted my own one, and it was a great help because I knew exactly what I needed in it/which way to design it, and how much work was involved before I started.

If you decide you don't like that sort of work, having tried it for a while, you can then walk away without any capital losses. And, if you do decide you still want to buy your own business, you will know exactly what to look for, and you won't get ripped off by the seller.

Anyway, getting a job to tide you over while you look around sounds like a great idea. I hope you get it - it sounds like fun!

Already done it before...And it's much, much, much easier and more fun/less stressfull than running a school with 350 kids, 50 staff, a budget of GBP1.6 million and an authority scrutinising everthing you do to make sure you meet their many targets.

I know exactly what I want to do and I am a very determined lady Ally. :lol:

Pablo, I don't know what resort but I think it will be either France, switzerland, Austria or Lapland.

Brimster, You're correct I am a teacher and I have been a deputy and a head which I must admit I made very clear on my applications. I'm not counting chickens yet though, got to get through the interview. Still excited though! :D

Th plan is to eventually have a house without a mortgage in England (need to sell current house first though...we have some interest now), and a small business with accomodation in a ski resort. Ski season running business/home for the summer.

Overriding plans are to ski as much as possible and not have to work in the UK education system again!

That seems to be a loss to the UK education system, but for very good reasons!

I have looked at ski workers a lot. I concluded that at one time, I had one of the best season jobs in skiing. Now, I finish my days skiing, and look at who is just starting work. It seems to be the small drink/music outfits at the bottom of slopes that are close to a village. They have opened at 3.30pm. Close before midnight, and get up for the early morning lift.

Tempting innit?

I didn't know you'd done it before.

I wouldn't like to be a headteacher either. I know teaching is very hard. I tried to train as one once - PGCE - and I only lasted for one term before all the kids rioted, most of the other teachers were horrid to me, and I spend 3 days crying non-stop :cry:

I am much happier being self-employed, even though I earn a lot less money than I would have done as a teacher.

And keeping a home here in the U.K. as well sounds very sensible to me.

Sounds so exciting.....so envious. Whilst I love Lapland I think your plans for a bar/cafe would be quite limited there. Their licensing laws are strange.

Rose I doubt I'll be posted to Lapland (if I get the job) and I really want to buy somewhere in France...Not to far and I speak a little french. (When I say little I really mean little! lol)

Oh yes, it so is!

My hubby is a sound engineer and musician so a music venue would be no problem at all, he's done it all his life. I also have a growing list of family and friends who would like work so eventually my plan is to swan around with a pen in my hand looking busy for a couple of hours a day making sure all is ship shape. Lol!

Thanks Ian and Tony. The interview is on the 13th May and I have to prepare a presentation...

'Staff appraisal - present the elements you feel should be included when reviewing one of your child care staff for the first time'.

Any tips or advice welcome!

Good luck .... I want to join everyone in wishing you luck.

So many people would like to make life changes and I admire anyone who does so. It's great that the time is right for you and it sounds like you'll make a success of whatever you venture into.

Re your appraisement - wracking brains for 'business speak' that you would need to include.

These appraisements - or elements of them must be pretty generic
You'd need all the usuals
Time keeping
Team working
Flexibility
Measures to improve on (performance improvement)

Is this the sort of thing you think would be required? plus measures that apply to the actual job -but I've never worked with children. I bet there's someone out there who can help out....

Would you be allowed to actually look at the member of staff in action? I would have thought this was the best way to judge some of their strengths and weaknesses (if this is what a staff appraisal is - never done one myself). I'd want to know how they interacted with the children - the positives and negatives.

If allowed, I'd also talk to the kids, and find out what they were enjoying/not enjoying etc. And, if possible talk to the parents (not in an obvious I'm spying on my staff though).

And I'd look at their work environment - like how tidy and orderly they kept it, and what toys etc. they were using.

And then, I'd look at their paper record - things like Dids said, plus complaints and commendations etc.

But I'm sure, as an ex-headmistress, you know far more than the rest of us about staff appraisals!

I wish they'd do an ESF staff appraisal, and ask the pupils what they thought of their ski instructors :lol:

Good Luck SB4B sounds like with your background you stand a good chance. I am insanely jealous of you getting out of teaching and starting a new life in a ski resort. When my youngest gets a bit older maybe I will too - just gotta finish that book (and get it published) to get the money first though :oops:

Ally, I'm back from Las Vegas and am still a house owner. I did have a little flutter but alas I didn't win a fortune. Las Vegas really is 'Disney world' for adults, I had a great time, but given the choice, skiing wins hands down.

I am very excited about my new job, but November seems such a long way off. I still don't know what resort I'll be sent too, but all the resorts that the company operate in are good resorts with great snow records.
