Re:Anyone been and any good?

Hi mfc,
Bandit is quite right (she has an amazing memory!). I did go last October. My daughter and I both really enjoyed it, and I'm in the middle of booking to go again.

The only snag in going for 3 days is that it's a bit risky in case you lose a day or more because of a white-out or whatever.

This is what I said about it in my report:
http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/6855.page

Ally

Re:Anyone been and any good?

i don't see why a white out would mean you lose a day, unless they close the lifts of course?

Its something I am mulling over doing this year, as my ski time is going to be a little restricted from now on, and grabbing a short midweek break would work for me. I like the idea of going when most other resorts are shut as well. I have not been glacier skiing out of main ski season.

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Tony,
Whoever it was who went out after us (I'm sorry I don't have a memory like Bandit's), said that they'd closed the whole slope for I think 3 days, because of very heavy snowfall, but she was okay, because it was just before she went. Maybe it's in my thread - I haven't re-read it.

There was pretty much no snow apart from on the pistes when we went, and that was pretty icy, but we still had a great time.

Ally

Re:Anyone been and any good?

I know I sound like a parrott, but if you want 3 or 4 days on a glacier at that time of year then Hintertux is a better bet, more than twice the amount of available distance and mainly chairs or gondolas. Okay Tux is a little quiet, bit this can more than be made up for by the deals you can get on 4* spa accomodation with good eating. I rode the Hintertux on the 4th of Oct 2008, 80cm of new snow the night I arrived, sun for 3 days and about 70km of piste open. There are also a lot of equipment testing weeks up there.

Tino, the big pull for the Tignes event is the lead price for the package of GBP99. Everyone loves a bargain. Hintertux may be way better, but it's unlikely to be cheaper.

Exactly. I'd go to Tux any day rather than Tignes, but those prices are very good.

Re:Anyone been and any good?

I have worked out what it would cost us to go to Tignes at October half-term, and it is considerably more than the headline GBP99 each.

Basic price = GBP125 (because it's after the 23rd October)
En-suite extra = GBP12
Currency extra = GBP18 assuming the pound stays low
Flights = GBP85 return with EasyJet to Geneva

Total          = GBP240 (plus insurance)

However, this is still pretty cheap, because it includes transfers from Geneva to the chalet and back, breakfast, tea and supper, ski and boot hire, ski pass, shuttle to and from the funicular, and free use of their facilites like their computer with internet connection.

And they say that if the ski slopes shut they will sort out some other activites although these will have to be paid for.

Tino, if you can find me a better price for Hintertux before Monday I will go there instead :D

Ally

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Ally, your price is only CONSIDERABLY more than the headline price because you have built flights in.
You cant do that. And its GBP99 only if you go earlier in the year, you have chosen a date when the headlince price is only GBP125pp.
Your only extra cost is the room supp, and you have factored in the currency adjustment which they MAY add in.
I dont think you are being fair in your assessment, as you know full well you have to add in travel costs.
Re:Anyone been and any good?

Tony,
You have to pay the currency surcharge of GBP6 per person per night if the pound stays below 1.15 euros to the pound, and GBP3 pppn if it is between 1.15 and 1.35 euros to the pound. I can't see the pound getting above 1.35 euros to the pound.

And it costs even more than GBP125 per person basic price if you go later again (can't remember right now and can't be bothered to check).

I am just giving people the benefit of my calculations and costings, so that they can get an idea of what it will actually cost them, without having to read through all the small print, go on the Easyjet website, and work it all out for themselves.

As I said, it is still pretty cheap, but the cost for me is actually 2.5 X the headline price

Ally

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Nonsense Ally. Your cost is GBP30 above the headline price, which is GBP125. The GBP99 is only for earlier dates. Your additional charges are the room supp and this potential curency charge, GBP30 in total.
You are still building in the cost of flying and it is quite clearly exclusive of travel.

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Tony,
Never mind arguing about my description of the cost, the cost to me has just gone up

I got the early e-mail from them, because I pre-registered, and I e-mailed them straight back, and then left them a phone message, but I still hadn't heard anything from them.

So I phoned them again just now, and the only room left for us was one with a balcony, which costs more again

But at least I have booked it now :D

It is very busy because it is half-term.

Have you booked yours yet?

Now I will get the flights. They have probably gone up as well

Ally

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Tony - Ally's been perfectly clear about how she's working out the cost to her, and her total costs are likely to pretty similar for anyone who doesn't live in Tignes!

Re:Anyone been and any good?

Thanks Admin :D

I have booked the flights now :D
And my flight costs include one bag each plus carbon offsetting but none of the other extras.

Total extra cost - GBP6 each for the balcony, and GBP5 more for the flights, so not too bad at all :D :D :D

I haven't included transport costs from home to/from the British airports, because obviously this is going to vary greatly from person to person depending on where everyone lives.

I just hope that there is plenty of snow and the sun shines. It will be great to try out my new boots and see if I am any better at ski-ing.

And we will probably book another coaching session with TDC like last time (cost last year 90 euros for 3 hours for the two of us). If it's the same guy, I hope he thinks we've both improved since last year.

Ally
