Mostly should depend on the fit of your ski boots. The sock thickness should make a noticeable difference to how tight your boots feel. Go for whatever thickness you are finding feels right now. If you are using a med/thick sock at the moment, it is nice to have a thin pair for the first day, or two of the season. The foam in the boot liners will have expanded a little after not being used, and your feet are not used to the boots, so a thinner sock makes things less cramped.

Sorry, reread your post. Most sock manufacturers have similar designation of thickness. The thin should be about the thickness of a mens shoe sock, maybe just a little thicker.

I now have 3 single (but different) Smartwool socks. I seriously need to stop losing things.

Skied today in some 'old' ski socks, still fitted, and they were horrible. The difference is unreal. Glad I have new ones coming this week 8)

I buy loads of pairs of identical socks at the same time, so that if I lose some it doesn't matter. I think the washing machine eats them - or maybe it's the tumble drier.
Re:Good deal on Smartwool socks...

Pablo,
I was really thinking of my ordinary cheap socks. My poor ski socks never get a chance to 'escape' because I wash them very carefully in a wool wash and then hang them in pairs in the airing cupboard and then put them (again in pairs) away in my ski drawer. They are too expensive to just sling in the washing machine all mixed up with everything else :D

Tony,
Why do you always lose the left socks? I would have thought there would be an equal probability of losing the left or right sock - unless the probability distribution is skewed for some reason (like you prefer to hop about on your right socked foot for some reason, allowing the left sock to 'escape')

As long as you buy enough pairs of socks the numbers should eventually even up.

Ally

Re:Good deal on Smartwool socks...

Ally, you said you buy loads of pairs of identical socks at the same time. I didnt say I lose left socks or right socks, but I said IF YOU WERE TO lose all left socks, you'd be left with a load of right socks, and vice versa. Therefore, buying identical pairs of socks does not solve the issue, unless you are buying useless tube socks which are not foot specific of course.

Re:Good deal on Smartwool socks...

Thanks very much, Dave Mac. Do you think Pablo has that many?

The only problem is that one wouldn't normally take more than 7 pairs of socks (because most people don't ski for more than 7 days at a time). So that's probably not enough pairs to 'even out' the left and right sock loss, unless you go on plenty of ski holidays and keep lots of spare pairs in the drawer at home to renew the pairs.

I do know where odd socks go to, though, because I'm always finding them when I'm cleaning up after my holidaymakers. I find them under the sofa cushions, stuck at the top of the washing machine, at the back of the airing cupboard, under the bed, under the sofa, and at the back of the wardrobe. And I would guess the holidaymakers also lose them in the car and on the beach etc.

Ally
