Scotland?

Hey guys, just a quick question..
Anyone planning going up north this Monday coming? I've checked some weather reports - looking cloudy and not so promising.. Was hoping to go up on Monday as I have access to a car then, but not any other day during the week - Due to the weather not looking so good I think I might have to miss Monday;

The actual question I'm posting to ask about though, how can one get from Glasgow to the likes of Cairngorm, Glenshee or any other of the 'resorts' (other than the Lecht) via public transport?
Anyone any details? :)

Shame you hadn't said earlier, I could have hooked you up with a lift from Glasgow today (Sunday), it is probably going to be epic although unfortunately I can't make it. Looks like the next day I will be trying is Thursday if the forecast holds, not going to waste my time before then unless things change. Keep an eye on mwis.org.uk for forecasts.

If you are planning on going for more than one day then public transport becomes an option, other than that it is not totally practical. I'd say Fort William/Glencoe are probably the most accessible. For the Coe you could get the train to Crianlarach and go on their ski and stay deal which includes transfer too and from 'resort'. For Fort William get the train to FW and then a taxi/bus to the hill. Not sure on details about buses.

A shame indeed! Sorry to hear you can't make it.
Thank you for the information Pablo - Hopefully the snow will continue to fall and the sun finds its way to the hills of Scotland soon and when I have time off!
I haven't skied since January in the 3V's.. I need to get that skiing feeling - that fix!

Also, winterhighland.info have a forum section 'lifts to the hills', I'd post there + in the respective thread for the hill you want to go to saying you are looking for a lift and will give petrol money.

Always willing to pay petrol money for a lift, of course.
So tempted to ready to ski stuff just now, stick it in the car and wait for the early morning to roll on and disappear - got the car sitting outside but I start work at 6.30pm tomorrow - life sucks sometimes

6.30pm and you are not skiing? Wot?

Glencoe takes at most an hour and 15 from here (say 2 max for you, depending on where you are in Glasgow). Leave at 6 to get there for 8; ski 9-2?! and you are back in Glasgow for 4.

Just get a half day ticket.

You to make a good point Pablo, however I've never gone skiing myself before - anyone that could have came with me are all out tonight and drinking, so can't really phone up and demand they leave to go skiing in 5 hours!

One more little question (Instead of making a whole new thread for it)

Equipment hire at Glencoe - Can one hire this equipment at the Glencoe Ski Center or must you stop at a place before the mountain?

Possibly heading up to Glencoe tomorrow as today sounds promising for them, so hopefully keeps the weather going!

You (and I) are definitely missing out today, things are just starting to clear up at Nevis Range with 4 inches of fresh last night.

From MWIS for the Western Highlands tomorrow...

Southerly 40 to locally 50mph, gusts 60 to 80mph; generally the strongest winds will be on higher western summits and major ridges.

Gales will make walking/skiing markedly more difficult with increasing height, and mobility very difficult on higher areas. Severe wind chill

A little snow (maybe) but mostly rain...

Heavy rain

Rain will fall more or less constantly all day, most patchy north of Glen Spean. Snow melt will lead to rapid rise of burns and rivers.

I wouldn't waste my time, there is no forecast that suggests it might be good.

Deary, deary me.. Life sucks!

I checked out Glenshee for a little hope - but they too according to MWIS have the same precdiciment as the rest (they say the entire of the mountains will be the same)
Can that be possible?
Regardless; if it even were to be decent weather.. Would they be open tomorrow (bank holiay Monday)?

Anybody know anyone going tomorrow?
I feel i'm about to cry.. :-(

I wouldn't waste my money or my time going tomorrow. They would be open but the winds, if they come as forecast, will probably shut uplift.

Reports coming in that today was the best day of the season at Nevis and a guy backflipped in to Easy Gully.

just to follow up on my moaning abotu scotland being so good and italy not-we have had about 50cms of fresh in the last 24hrs and it hasnt stopped yet!!
tomorrow will be epic as was chest deep in the steep today!

I'm endlessly looking for the forecast to change..

I've established that Glencoe will have high winds and rain, but yet their snow coverage is excellent and they're expected to open every lift - how does that work?

Glenshee's weather seems OK - but their snow coverage is horrid after looking at their webcam;

and not many lifts are open..

Do I;
A: Go to Glencoe and hope it doesn't rain
B: Go to Glenshee and hope the webcam is showing a wrong image (wishful thinking..)
C: Not go at all

Option C seems the most obvious, but I guess i'm looking for someone to say "I'll flick the good weather switch and all will be well"

Glenshee's skiing is usually by the fences anyway, cover looks good to me + you can't see Glas Maol from the webcam, it is my understanding that the links are still in place. The weather is still going to be terrible and you will spend twice the amount of time driving there as it would take to Glencoe.

It is possible that the lifts at Glencoe are sheltered by the wind coming from a certain direction.

By all means go but prepare for it to be miserable.

Cover looks good?! You did look at the link above, yes?..

As for travel times, according to Google maps - From my location;
Glencoe = 1 hour 53 minutes
Glenshee = 2 hours 7 minutes

They seem practically the same
So desperate to go skiing, but i'm pondering on whether its the desperation or not which is making me want to risk goin up there..

Yes I did look at the link above. Have you ever skied Glenshee? I have ;)

My experience of the drives is totally different although in fairness if I am going from Glasgow it is the West End (I don't know where you are...).

Google Maps/Sat Nav take you the totally wrong way for Glenshee along a horrific road btw, if you are going go through the centre of Perth and take the A93 through Old Scone.

I have skied Glenshee once before - Just last year infact and I can tell you just now - there was no way as little snow as I see in that webcam view :P

Thanks for the tip on the route to drive Pablo and thank you for your other information too.
I'm more the Kings Park area of Glasgow - At Hampden Park essentially;

I have come to the conclusion - Wake up around 0830 (when the 'resorts' open) and phone both Glencoe & Glenshee Ski Center's and ask for a live weather report..
If good/decent - Leave pronto
If not - No wasted journey and I can be happy not having wasted time/money

Yeah.. I got up at 0830, looked outside and it was chucking it down.. So just went back to bed, got up not long ago and checked the webcams for Glencoe/shee - Horrible! :)

I feel better now.. I'll be off to the gym today instead ;)

thats a shame - i was up in Aviemore at the weekend and the conditions at Cairngorm on Saturday were brilliant! Mid station was reporting depths of 210cm, and a few cm forecast for tomorrow or the next day.

If you can make it that far north in the next couple of weeks, the conditions should still be pretty good. Got my fingers crossed for one last trip up before the end of April

Yeah i'm keeping an eye out on the conditions over the next coming weeks - last year i'm sure it was reported that the best skiing weather Scotland had ever seen was in May - so there's still hope!

yeah and there is the end of year party in june/july time up the back of one of the corries, not sure what its called-bbq and a kicker
