Re:New skis :D

They are now the oldest of my 5 pairs (c2005?!). I've always wanted a pair (well, actually the design slightly newer than that) but the deal was too good to say no to. A helmet cam could be interesting for my first time on them to document their attempt to kill me.

Re:New skis :D

Here's my new skis. Hand made in Austria, designed by Kessler

total length………..1.55 m………….1.63 m…………….1.71 m
tip width…………….114 mm………..120 mm………….128 mm
waist width………...66 mm………….68 mm……………70 mm
tail width…………….101 mm……….107 mm…………..115 mm
side cut radius…….10.5 m.……….12.5 m.…………14.9 m

Two sheets of titanium alloy, decambered tips and tails, clothoid side cuts, low profile tips, and I would guess there's some carbon nad rubber in there too.

These are the 171, and 155. I didn't think there was enough difference to justify the 163 as well, but if I could only get one pair, that would be the best choice.

They carve up ice like it's hero snow :D

Well actually not. A combination of lack of promotion by Palmer, and that many people wouldn't think to buy skis made by a snowboard company. The fact that the snowboard company dominates the podiums at WC snowboard racing, the Olympics, and boardercross has escaped them. So these things are ending up on sale. The 155s were $312 w/ free shipping. The 171s were $400 w/ $20 shipping. I picked up deals on the bindings Tyrolia carve binding for $65, and Tyrolia demo bindings (not the cheap ones) for $65 again. I never thought I would be able to buy these skis, but at those prices I couldn't pass them by.

Re:New skis :D

I used the 171s in great corduroy conditions for a couple of weeks. They are a very easy ski to use. Aside form the tenacious edge grip when carving, you really notice how little effort it takes to use them, and how less tiring they are. I used them for a GS practice session, and although, I didn't see my times change much, what was immediately apparent was how easy the transitions were. I don't race enough to be really good at gates, and always feel rushed to make transitions. With the Palmers, I felt I had a lot more time. The clothoid sidecut is a smaller radius at the tip end, and a longer radius at the tail. This isn't a totally new idea, but is much more exaggerated on these skis. the smaller radius at the tip hooks into turns easily. The larger radius at the tail, releases the skis easily at the end of the turn.

I had both skis out on very icy conditions last weekend. The combination of decambered tip and tail, with the double sheets of titanium alloy, hold an edge on ice like nothing I have skied before. Irregularities that would have had my other skis bouncing around, had no effect on the Palmers grip. The decambered ends mean that instead of the pressure being concentrated at the tip and tail in a carve, the pressure is redistributed along the entire edge. The low profile tip turn up blends with the sidecut when carving to give a longer effective edge, and the titanium stops flap and vibration on unevenness, but also adds to the torsional stiffness.

Later in the days, when things got soft, and chopped up, both skis cut through the crud better than anything I have used, including the Metrons, which excel in those conditions.

I found this on youtube

I think that especially for the pcl, a narrower ski, that doesn't stress the knee laterally is going to be best. These skis are less tiring and very easy to turn. I quickly found that these skis don't need to be muscled, and that my race boots were too stiff. I now use a softer flexing boot with them, which is again less tiring.

Re:New skis :D

Alastair and Huard, If you do end up buying these, a word on bindings. Any Tyrolia, or head binding should fit the carve plate, except the rail types. I put the SL 110 on the 171s. It's a carve binding with a 30mm stand height. It ends up rather tall, which I like. On the 155s I put SP 120 demo binding, which is 31mm stand height. I wanted to able to let other people try the 155s. For a demo binding it is very solid, and I didn't notice any difference in feel from the SL. Huard, you might want to go with less stand height for your knee, the LD 12 is 21mm.

Re:New skis :D

Hi All,

I'm John Springer-Miller, Chairman of KneeBinding. I thought I would jump in and try to provide some information regarding knee injuries.

Most ACL injuries on skis (70% - 75%) occur when a skier's hips and knees are both bent and their ski is pulled directly sideways. Your leg can't bend that way, and the knee takes the hit. This is often the result of simply catching an inside edge, or getting caught up in a pile of crud. It is easy to simulate this - simply take a seat (hips and knees bent) and pull your pant cuff directly sideways to the outside. You can generally feel it right away.

The ordinary "toe-twist" release mechanism of your bindings works well when the force on the ski is a twisting one - for example when the tip of the ski is pulled to the side. But when the lateral force is in the area of the heel of your boot (even slightly in front or behind it) the toepiece of the binding does not detect any force at all - so it does not release.

The only proven way to mitigate this injury is to have the heel of the binding release directly sideways, with no other release occurring. Note that the Tyrolia "Diagonal" binding does NOT do this. In oder for the heel to release sideways, it must first release upward. Since most knee injuries happen when you are rear-weighted (i.e. hips and knees bent) the Tyrolia doesn't help.

Also - don't confuse this with the traditional kind of "turntable" bidnings. These have a rotating plate under the heel. These, also, are designed to help facilitate the toe-twist" release. Turntable bindings have side lugs/bars along the heel of the boot that absolutely prevent any lateral heel release whatsoever.

Kneebindings were created because knee ligament tears and ruptures now account for 1/3 of all reported ski injuries. This includes 70,000 ACL injuries on skis every year, worldwide. KneeBindings have a third dimension of release - a "PureLateral" heel release that can let go of the boot just before the force is great enough to injure your knee - all without pre-release issues.

By the way - women ARE even more at risk of the injury than men are - and there are five or six very interesting reasons for this!

I would be happy to provide any information about this topic that you all want - either through this forum or through emails.

Thanks for giving me space to share this information!

Re:New skis :D

A couple of questions for JSM.

It seems to me that when someone is in the position (that all the articles and videos show) of being at risk of acl injury (falling back to one side), that the only release that would be truly effective, would be a vertical toe release. Is that possible ?

I also wonder if wider skis have had any impact on the incidence of acl injury. It's easy to actually feel the extra stress that wide skis put on the mcl (pcl). That being the case, is the effect the same with a typical acl injury fall ?

Would appreciate your views this

Re:New skis :D

My friend - who skis since she was 6 - had the most horrendous knee injury, after which she needed an operation (probably another one as well) and could get back into skiing so she's learning the board now. And it happened after the most innocent of falls, which would normally leave only your ego bruised. She was going almost straight downohill at the end of a big slope turn and hit a litte dimple. She fell straight forward on her face, but her binding didn't release as she wanted to set it tighter earlier in the shop - we went for the long mogul run where you can't afford to lose your ski.

Re:New skis :D

Trencher - the position you mention is the classic "Phantom Foot" position - often described as a rearward-twisting fall (mostly to distinguish it from a forward-twisting fall). But the fact that you are "falling" backwards doesn't hurt you. Nor does the twisting. These simply put you at risk. It is the abduction that causes the damage.

Think about it as simply catching an edge in such a way that the ski/boot system is pulled directly sideways to the outside. This happens all the time when you are skiing, and that's ok. If you are standing, your foot can move sideways - away from the other foot. But if it happens when your hips and knees are bent ("falling backwards") your leg can't bend that way, and if the force is great enough, it will injure your knee. If you are twisting INTO the abduction ("counter rotation"), the lateral abduction force required is even less, and you are at greater risk of a knee injury.

Once again - try this: sit down (hips and knees bent), face forward, and pull your right foot straight sideways to the outside (to your right) until you feel the pressure. Then, twist your upper body to the right, and pull your foot the same way. You'll feel it in your knee even sooner.

Upward toe releases have never been shown to affect knee injury rates. After all, think about being back in that sitting position. Your hips and knees are bent, but there isn't any "upward" force on your toe!

I have never seen a study that compared knee injury rates based on the width of the skis. However, people often make the mistake of thinking that SHORTER skis reduce the knee injury rate. We do not see any evidence of this. If anything, the opposite may be true.

John Springer-Miller

Re:New skis :D

I Can speak from first hand experience on this topic...

Having snapped my ACL in January on day 4 of a 12 day hoilday I wish I had known about Kneebindings before!

I was skiing on XWings on an unpisted red, not moving too quickly started a left turn and at the moment of weight transfer caught an edge. I heard a crack In my right knee and felt my knee joint pop out and back in....oh then out again! Ouch!!
Blood wagon, helicopter, doctors, insurance company's ete etc.

Prof David Barrett has now reconstructed my ACL and did a bit of house work to my knee whilst he was poking about. I am now going to physio 5 days a week and can start driving from 7th April!
I am hoping to return to work around the end of April...Yahoo

I am going to miss my season of water skiing, trekking and my planed trips up Mont Blanc and Ben Nevis.

I return to skiing in January 2011 and will skiing on kneebindings and suggest to those of you that own your skis to fit a pair too...

Good luck everybody

Huard.
