They use really old 737s which convert into freighters. I sat on one to Turin last year and the seat back was broken. The stewardess kept telling me off for having my seat reclined......despite me showing her it would not stay up.
But they fly, they work ok, and if it means getting on one for a holiday, I'd use them.

If you are going for cheap flights you can't expect luxury. The price of the flights, IMO, reflects the quality of the aircraft.

Re:Jet2.com now flying from East Midlands to Chambery.

I knew the planes were old before I went, but I guessed it would be okay. I am a nervous flyer so I probably notice things a bit. Our plane was an hour late leaving Gatwick as the plane was first coming in from France but had, had technical probs that had to be repaired hence we were late. The seats were as Tony said, the lights flickered continually, the loos at the front did,nt work, the door seal was shot to pieces and the draft blew in, the inner rim of our window fell out, so Hubby being a glazier put it back in place and had to use his jacket against it so that the wind did,nt whistle through. There were paint bubbles all over the place that with change of altitude kept exploding. An old bakelite switch burnt out. The in flight meal was a package with the usual wipe and plastic cutlery with an apple which had a maggot in and a biscuit. One cup of tepid coffee, as the water would not heat any more. Bearing in mind that to Finland is a 4hr flight. Any way landed had a fabulous holiday.
On return flight when it landed had huge blocks of ice on windscreen and we were told there would be delay as the heating in the cockpit had failed. The plane was delayed for 24hrs, thankfully we were taken back to resort and put up in a nice hotel, so actually had an extra day.
Boarded the plane which was exactly the same one we flew in on, so same problems on the way back, except Hubby had the maggotts in his apple this time. But where they had fixed the heating it was like a sauna, the sweat absolutely poured off me for 4hrs. So not for me I', afraid.
Tony,
That's exactly what I was thinking, and in fact I had a good look at the Civil Aviation Authority's website just now to see what they said about aeroplane safety standards. They do say if you've had a problem with an aeroplane to write to them.

Rose,
Maybe you should write and complain.

Ally

We have dealt with TO who to be fair have been very good. They had a lot of complaints re: that flight alone. So they agreed to either refund our money in full for the 2nd holiday, although n othing for the first holiday. Or we can leave the money with them and have either another ski holiday or a Summer holiday. As for the Aviation board they say rigourous tests are done on all planes so therefore was deemed to be safe.
The problem for me is getting the time off work to fit in another ski holiday. I could have had either last week or this week off but unfortunately I am in the middle of Jury Service, which is expected to go into a third weeks, so thats out for me. I will probably save it for an extra Summer holiday.
I am quite cross as for years because of my fear of flying I did,nt go any-whereI have come such a long way in overcoming it, its a shame that just that one flight has made me feel a bit anxious again

Look at it this way - did the plane crash? No. Did anyone die? No. Did anything bad happen? No.
Job done. You wont fly on a plane that bad again.

With the greatest respect to Rose, can we get a grip here Ally?
The wings didnt fall off. The engine didnt blow up. The pressurisation didnt fail. It was a crappy old plane that is in need of upgrading, and there were some technical faults. Many flights are delayed of affected by technical faults. I agree that the Jet2 planes are pretty out of date and by a long way not the best to fly on, but they are air worthy and are not dangerous.

If you have a terrorist on board your flight, I could understand why you might reconsider flying again. Or a particularly bad flight through severe turbulence scares some people off. Or getting struck by birds and having to make an emergency landing is not a good experience.

Rose - I know about a fear of flying, as I had it for years. But having a plane with a frozen windscreen because the heating failed is a small technical issue which can be repaired. Having broken seats is not great, in fact the seat on my Monarch flight on Saturday would not stay upright, but it made for a relaxing flight home!

The food is a different matter - you really should make a complaint to the airline in writing and also to the industry watchdog, and also report in the various airline rating websites. Thats unpleasant, but not dangerous.

Rose, you need to remind yourself that no one got hurt and nothing dangerous happened. Your fear is of the plane crashing, not of flying. And despite having what you regard as a bad experience, nothing REALLY bad happened, so in a way it goes towards conquering your fear.

They have standards to meet in order to fly. Yes they may be heaps of sh1te but they are worthy of flying. They have to be tested by the pilot before each flight.
Planes that fall out of the sky do so for a multitude of reasons, not one. A culmination of events if you like. The 737 had its fair share of problems in the 80s with rudders jamming in certain wind conditions, but apart from that it has a good track record. UK airlines are subject to as stract checks as anywhere in the world. Broken seats and maggots in apples do not make them not worthy of flying.
I have flown on some old bangers in my time, but never did I feel at risk or that the thing was about to drop out of the sky.....planes just dont do that.

Flying is the safest from of transport. When it rarely goes wrong, its generally catastrophic, point taken. But planes DO NOT just drop out of the sky.

I caught the point you made. I don't think corners can be cut in those crucial areas, the bottom line is that an aircraft must be safe to fly. If the engineers/pilot/other staff aren't happy with the condition of the aircraft then it will not leave the ground because if something goes wrong it is their necks that are on the line.

Nope, not at all. As Pabs said, all planes are maintined regularly. In the UK probably more so than many other places in the world. They have stringent checks before each single flight and if it is deemed unable to fly, something has to be fixed or replaced before it can, hence technical faults and delays.
Your point was hinting that an airline who provides poor food and has broken seats is likely to cut corners in maintenance and air worthyness. I see your point, and did previously, but I dont think it would get through the checks in place.
Each accident in history has affected the way we fly today, the checks put in place, and the general increased safety.
Its not great when you get a turbulent flight, an old plane, or a maggot in your apple. But that plane will not take off if it is not safe to do so.

Indeed, the pilot would never have flown had he deemed it unsafe to do so. Tech faults are a pain as they cause delays, but you have to tell yourself that it is better to be safe than sorry and its for yours and everyones good that the flight is being delayed.

As for flight prices, I am afraid you have to accept that prices are low. Air travel is more common and heavier than it has ever been, and as a result prices have dropped. Your flight probably cost something like GBP50 return per person as part of the holiday that you paid for, as the tour ops charter these planes for the season to keep costs down.

Unfortunately, when you book a tour op package, you cannot choose the airline, upgrade to first class, or pick your seats ( to a degree). Unless you are flying to the US/Canada in which case option A is pay the quoted price and fly long haul Thomas Cook or Monarch, or pay an upgrade and go BA/Air Canada where you will most definitely receive a far higher standard of service and probably a much nicer aircraft.

Having flown Jet2.com, I wouldn't choose to do so again to be fair though.

The Thompson/Thomas Cook aircraft I flew on in to Calgary was miles better than both BA and Air Canada Long Haul journeys I have made in the past few years. In fact, one Air Canada flight is probably the worst I have ever been on. I reckon it is just your luck unless you choose to fly with someone with a properly good rep (Emirates, Virgin etc).

I have two flights booked later on in the year both with Thompson this time. I must accept that budget airlines have budget prices. I have looked at the alternative if I want to go back to Lapland. Travel Finnair, 2 stops, 8hrs travel time and twice as much as the holiday normally costs, so thats that option out the window.

Thompson are as good a charter airline as I have flown with. Modern planes (apart from a couple of old 757's which have been refurbed), leather seats with reasonable legroom, decent food (Aldo Zilli).....I had nothing but good experiences with them. They now own the old First Choice fleet as well, although they have binned a lot of their older planes.

Of course you could list off numerous incidents based on negligence (or whatever) but it is a pretty useless picture without giving some idea of the sheer amount of flights that go without incident each year, it is a tiny fraction and the chances of it happening to you must be close to nil.

Pabs, again you are correct. It is just a numbers game. But i was just pointing out that for Tony to say that unsafe planes do not fly due to 'stringent checks' is wrong. Unsafe planes do fly.

American Airlines which has the greatest number of crashes, 13, offsets that against 25m filghts. So the chances are indeed very small.

JAL123 was back in 1985 - a lot has been learned from that accident. If you know about these disasters, you will be aware that this aircraft wasd previously involved ina tail strike incident - something that VERY rarely ever happens. The repair of the rear bulkhead was botched by Boeing, at a time when the company was in financial trouble. The repair was said to be good for 10000 pressurisations, and this flight was number 12000 and something subsequently. When the bulkhead failed, it tore out the hydraulic lines - something that would not be expected, and thus the place was unable to be controlled. Boeing admitted responsibility, but it appears that JAL were not inspecting their planes sufficiently.
This accident led to a change in JAL inspections, a review of Boeing procedures for bulkhead replacements, and additional safeguards against the failure of the hydraulics. The whole rear tailplane was ripped off, yet the plane a 747 managed to fly for 32 minutes before crashing. There are not many disasters where 747s are involved, and you can always find an ISOLATED incident to show up things.

As for AA191, that was back in 1979 and involved the no longer flying DC10. In fact virtually all 3 engined passenger jets no longer fly. If I recall, this is where the left hand engined literally flew off over the wing on take off? I seem to remember that American Airlines took the option NOT to install a 2nd and additional stall warning system TO KEEP COSTS DOWN at the time - this is no longer an option available to any airline!
This was the 4th fatal accident involving the DC10, which had some serious design faults, and all stem back to the late 60s when aircraft manufacturers were trying to go bigger, faster, cheaper etc. 3 engined jets like the TriStar and DC10 were regarded as more economical yet capable of carrying up to 500 passengers.
Again in this scenario, improper maintenance was deemed to be at the cause. Yet again, the scenario involved taking out much of the hydralic system which led to a failure to control the aircraft, and something which was unprecedented at the time.
The engine in question was previously damaged and removed. The procedure for its removal and return to the wing were incorrect, and involved using a forklift truck. The airline did this to save time. This has now been outlawed, and AA have changed maintenance procedures.

I agree accidents happen, but there is ALWAYS chain of events, not one single incident. When they happen, they are usually catastrophic, but the number of accidents these days is less than ever, and procedures across the FAA are far greater than they used to be.

If I looked too closely at the A300 I flew on last week, I would worry about loose rivets, but I have confidence in the maintenance of that airline and the knowledge of that flight crew. You have to, dont you?

 TonyH, that could have been my Dad writing that last post, he knows all the facts on planes. He was an aircraft technician all his life, not big planes, harriers and such like, he said they often had to fly in them after work had been done by the technicians, just to keep them on their toes.

With my previous fear of flying, I made it my business to find out what happened to just about every major air crash in history. The programmes on Discovery are interesing viewing as they cover off these issues, and what it makes you realise is that one thing does not take down an aircraft, they have millions of back ups. In times gone by, they had not looked into the what ifs as much, and have learned by mistakes. Which only goes to make flying safer than ever.
One thing I learned recently was about Dopplar radar only hainv VERY recently been installed at many airports - this is what detects dangerous weather conditions that have been known to cause accidents and problems around air fields. It has been proved that with Doppler, a lot of accidents would have been prevented, especially ones involving microbursts.

Hard to imagine that a flock of birds could bring a jumbo down still though, isnt it?

Tony, we could debate this forever really couldn't we? And it is not my intention to do that for fear of being argumentative.
My point was simply that a company that cuts corners/cost on the cheapest and most basic repairs instills precious little confidence in me in other areas. Simple as that.

My Hubby watches all the aircrash investigation programmes and told me he had seen a plane fly off a runway and over the edge of a cliff into the sea. When we landed at Preveza airport last year, we got of the plane, then he said 'Oh I meant to tell you it was this airport that the plane went over the cliff'. At least he had the decency to tell me after

Re:Jet2.com now flying from East Midlands to Chambery.

What you dont want to know are the numerous incidents that go unreported, such as undercarriage which fails to come down, or at least a warning light telling the pilot thats the case. Quite common.
Or birdstrikes that cause emergency landings, more common. There was a good via on youtube last year about a Thompson flight from Manchester which took a bird thorugh the engine on take off causing it to misfire. They had to burn off a lot of fuel and make an emergency landing on 1 engine - all quite normal and procedural, but not too comfortable for those onboard!
A flight I was on as a kid from Tunisia to East Mids was ushered away from the terminal on landing, and we were surrounded by fire engines. It turned out one of the tyres burst and caught fire on landing, again quite a common thing to happen.

Planes are designed to withstand these kind of things. Its quite comforting to know these do happen I think.

I take your point. But you should not jump to rash assumptions. I have confidence every time I fly. As long as I avoid an African airline.
