Is it me?

Is it me or is this forum alot quieter this season. There are the normal 'regular reporters' but on the whole the news and reviews about the resorts is very QT!
I have to say I have found over the last couple of years the comments about Mayrhofen and Soll for instance very helpfull prior to arriving in relation where to or sometimes where not to ski or drink etc. I hope I have returned the favours in relation to comments i have added.
Pre warned is pre armed as they say!

I'm very depressed. We have had something of a heat wave. the weather system has stalled, and we have had a week of rain, not even dipping below freezing at night. May get one week of slushy skiing before it's over :(

It's made worse by having had an incredable February - Sun nearly every day, -teens at night and around zero for highs :D

Trencher

Let's have one here

The second of the two photos is taken from behind, and exaggerates the inner ski lead. The first photo would be a good one to discuss. What could be done to reduce inner tip lead ?

There are three contributing factors to inner tip lead. Hip (or body) counter, the distance between the skis during the turn, and the angle the legs are inclined. The last factor is not something that can be changed. People need varying degrees of hip counter in order to angulate. Inner tip lead is often a sign of excessive hip counter. In this case, the hips show little counter. A framing (legs not parallel), will show up as excessive distance between the skis, and cause exaggerated inner tip lead. Lastly, the angle the legs are inclined produces inner tip lead as result of the limited flex of the ankle in a ski boot. It is unavoidable as the inner leg has to be flexed during a turn.

The real issue, I think is what ski, and edge pressures changes as a result inner tip lead. If the inner ski is actively pushed forward during the turn, it will result in loss of edge pressure at the front of the ski. Actively pulling back on the inside ski will keep the ski tip and edge engaged. So while it may not be apparent, the inside skis is being actively pulled back in these photos.

Pabs, I'm glad you mentioned it, I just love to think about this stuff :D

Trencher

Do you find when you are really inclining-->angulating towards the end of the turn that if you have a small error it becomes more pronounced?

It is something I am quite conscious of and can fix but it is a lot easier for me just to correct whatever mistake I am making rather than go in to too much detail (for me).

For sure, the forces are greater, and so any movement that causes instability, or reduced edge hold will have more effect. I think it one of the reasons you don't see many people hanging on to their turns too long, and in part why instruction models discourage it. However, that's where the fun is (at least for me).

The problem I see happening most with people carving (at the end of the turn), is that they allow their speed to increase, especially if the slope drops off a little more. They then loose the balance between speed, skis inclination angle, and the properties of the ski (radius, but also stiffness). As the skis start to feel chattery in the second half of the turn, they release earlier, and end up building even more speed.

Trencher

Re:Is it me?

Thanks for that, I really like railing a long turn especially if you can use the turn to try and preserve as much of your speed as possible (especially with powder turns) but it is almost too easy to lose most of your momentum if you get carried away

Do you get to ski much powder Trencher? If so, do you adapt your technique appropriately for it?

Take lessons, and/or keep practising.I didn't have powder lessons, just threw myself in at the deep end, took some massive wipeouts, laughed a lot, and went back to do it again without falling over. My technique is probably far from perfect, but I am at a stage now where nothing phases me and I am happy to have a go at anything, within reason (before Pabs posts a pic of some 90 degree narrow couloir surrounded by rocks.....)
And you shouldn't be affected if your skis disappear, as you shouldn't be looking at them anyway.

Re:Is it me?

Tony,
I WAS in a lesson, and all the instructor said was 'don't snowplough' without telling us what TO do. And I don't know what I did, but it must have been something pretty bad because I got thrown forwards through the air in something like a cartwheel and one of my legs really hurt and all I could think about was that post where whoever it was said you can bust the ligaments in your knee by over-extending your legs (which I'd just done).

Anyway, my leg was okay after I lay there for a few seconds, and after that I just did the sort of turns where you pivot your heel round and keep your skis flat, like you're ski-ing on egg-shells and I didn't fall over again. I certainly didn't try carving, which I can only do at speed, because that crash I'd had was quite enough for me. And, of course, I already had a broken big toe on my right foot, although I didn't know that at the time.

I realise you're not supposed to look at your skis, but it is rather alarming when they totally disappear out of sight

Ally

Re:Is it me?

'Carving' works but it is a totally different sensation and requires a different technique. I don't think I am qualified, nor do I have the technical knowledge, to tell you.

Look at videos of a couple of my favourite skiers... 'carving' isn't the only way to deal with powder, most skiers adapt their turn shape according to the terrain they are faced with.

Eric Hjorleifson

Ingrid Backstrom

Re:Is it me?

Thanks Pablo,
Well, if it's as complicated as all that, I'm glad I didn't have a go at carving in the deep powder.

I will have a look at the videos later, thanks very much :D

Tony,
I don't see what people have against the humble snow-plough. I find it very useful, even now. I use it when I'm trying not to slide into the person in front of me in the lift queue, when I'm going down a very narrow, icy, blue run blocked by masses of people, in the boarder cross park to cut my speed down a bit before going parallel over the jumps, and in fact it does work in powder but only if you use it to turn and then go parallel afterwards (I tried it out myself when the instructor wasn't there to tell me off). I even saw my instructor in a snow-plough while he was talking to another instructor, and I noticed that the pipers in kilts were doing the snow-plough in Scotland the other day.

Ally

Re:Is it me?

Ally, you almost address what is wrong with using a 'wedge' in your own post. The instructor was probably just trying to discourage it for use in powder where it is more of a hindrance than a useful tool IME. I doubt the instructor meant that it was useless at all times, no one can doubt its use in certain situations - even the pros use it to kill a little speed in skiercross.

Just because you see someone else doing it doesn't mean you should.

And I'm very glad to hear that even the professionals sometimes use it in the skiercross. I did a very sneaky snow-plough behind my morning instructor in the boardercross park so that he couldn't see it and tell me off - my nice afternoon instructor didn't mind me doing one at all in there.

I had an instructor in Val Thorens last year who wouldn't let us do one in that boardercross park and I hadn't been in it before (neither had he because it was brand new - not even finished in fact) and I shot out of that one at the end like a cork out of a bottle - much too fast - and I didn't want to do that again.

Ally

Well,
While we're highlighting this issue, what's wrong with what I said here? I was just trying to be nice to GadgetGirl. And I do think that the issue of ski-ing while pregnant is a very important one, worthy in fact of a whole thread on its own. I mean, we discuss the difficulties involved in ski-ing after a fracture, for example, so what's the difference?

I admit the bit about our dairy herd was a bit wibbly (which was why I flagged it so people could miss it out if they wanted), but it was only a couple of lines, and I haven't had a ski-ing accident whilst I was pregnant to illustrate my point.

If you're reading this, GadgetGirl, I hope you had a great holiday, and you're still needing childcare for next year's ski holiday :D

http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/32/8159.page
(Half way down the page)

I would be more comfortable myself, if they just got rid of the star system altogether.
Re:Is it me?

It's not the actual rating that ticks me off, but that I am genuinely interested to hear another view, or a different understanding of something. The star system lets one disagree without providing a reason. I can see that it works to highlight something that is not appropriate, or something that is especially well liked. It's when it is used as a counter view, with no need offer an explanation, that it's a little frustrating.

Oh well

Trencher

Re:Is it me?

Either that or there really are some stupid t**** about.
A couple of things here:

1. People really shouldnt get too hung up about the ratings
2. The person going around one starring posts has clearly had a sense of humour bypass
3. We are wasting a lot of thread time discussing this
4. I have been one starred on several times, usually by a certain person who no longer posts on here, because they don't like my opinions, which is a little sad. If I came on here and said "Skiing is for losers and you are all imbeciles" I would expect to get one star.
5. I get the impression that some people rate one star to people who post stuff they simply don't like or agree with, not because it is incorrect.

I would like to suggest a new system to our Admin man:

Get rid of the rating system, so people cannot rate any more, and introduce a rating based on the number of posts you make.
Someone who posts rarely would therefore be a beginners, whereas someone who has posted 2500 times for example would be a black run skier, etc etc.

I think other websites use something similar?

Re:Is it me?

I would like to know if anyone here, who regularly posts, is actually in favour of keeping the present star system.

The only benefit in the current system that I can see, is to those members who read posts but who don't, for whatever reason, make posts themselves. So that if they agree, or disagree, with a post, they can anonymously make their feelings known, but without explaining their reasons for the grading.

Those who do post, can simply post a reply.

As someone who has posted quite a lot during the last year, I would like to say that I find it upsetting when someone gives me a one star grading and I don't know why. I have no way of knowing if I have unintentionally hurt their feelings and hence no way of apologising, and likewise no way of improving my posts since I don't know where I went wrong.

Also, the system is quite clearly open to abuse from members grading for a reason which actually has nothing to do with the quality of the post.

Tony,
I don't think we need a new system based on the number of posts we make, since this number is already recorded and available to view.

As I said before, I don't think we need the star system at all. Perhaps then, those members who have previously graded anonymously might actually post their response, positive or negative, which can then be debated in the open forum in a transparent and democratic manner.

Best wishes to everyone - those who post and those who don't :D :D

Ally

Re:Is it me?

Sorry Scarlet Fez for hi-jacking your thread

If you look in the right-hand bottom corner of a post (when you're logged on) you will see a little rating box, where you can give a post from one to five stars, depending on what you think of it. As far as I know there are no rules, or guidelines, for how you rate it, so you could give it 5 stars because you think it's very funny, or one star because you disagree with it. And no-one will know who rated the post.

Posts are very rarely rated, but when they have been rated the number of stars they've been given appears above the message. And this rating contributes to the number of stars that you personally hold, shown by your screen name, or avatar. In theory, the number of stars you hold should be directly related to the quality of your posts. However, as we have been explaining, it doesn't always work like that...

I hope this is what you wanted to know,

Ally

Edit
I forgot to mention, that the same post can be rated a number of times by different members, so the rating can change, as it averages out the number of stars. Trencher's infamously rated one star posts on this thread, for example, have currently moved up to 3 stars, presumably because someone has re-rated them 5 stars.

Re:Is it me?

I like the star system. For one thing, it is a check and balance against persistent abuse ~ as long as it is used correctly. There are other ski web sites that suffer some awful interactions. Many people join J2Ski because, by and large it is a friendly site.

I particularly like the ability to five star someone, when they have made an outstanding constribution. This may have been a good bit of humour, a technical item, good local knowledge, and so on. By doing so, we are encouraging positive and knowledgable contributions.

There are some individuals who give strong and knowledgeable info, some on technique, some on info for a particular resort, when requested, ie they are adding value to our group knowledge.

I do not see a benefit in a 2,3 or 4 star.

The main area of contention seems to be the one star. I have read some awful postings, verging on the dangerous, to which a one star would be inadequate. Added to which, as seen by some recent postings, some individuals are trying to work on anothers star rating. Three examples have been quoted. The star posters should be aware that there is a higher god on this site, who has the power to smite!

I have thought about differing reward structures, but they all seem to have a downside.

Re:Is it me?

Hi Scarlet Fez,
Three stars is not a bad rating - it means you are 'okay' - not poor or excellent, but okay. So I'd keep going with your comments, if I was you :D

You rate other people's comments by clicking on the box in the bottom right hand corner of their message, once you are logged on. It gives you the option of rating their post from one to five stars.

And the rating you personally hold is a moving average of all the grades you have been given by other people on your posts. So if, for example, you have only ever been graded once, and that grade was 5 stars you yourself will be rated 5 stars etc. etc.

Ally

The sooner the better, please Admin, I have discovered another disadvantage of the current system - it makes one quite paranoid

I have been downgraded from 4 stars to 3 stars this morning, and I wondered why, because I don't think I've said anything unpleasant, technically incorrect, or even very wibbly just lately. It seems I was given one star for saying I liked Snapzzz's joke, and 3 stars for explaining how the star system works to Scarlet Fez, and this was enough to push down my star rating.

So, I think some improvements to the system would be an excellent idea, thank you very much, before none of us have any stars left, and the whole issue becomes irrelevant :D

How about giving a person the option of opting out altogether? I mean, it's not that I like having lots of stars, I just don't like losing them, or wondering what I've said that could be so bad

Thanks,
Ally

To help you out on the paranoia front and since people seem to be demonstrating their wibble in stars rather than constructive comments I just gave you those five stars Ally.... 8)

I'm afraid I don't really care too much about the starring system and don't even understand why I'm on 5 but sure that will change after this post has been read. There are a lot of people on here who contribute regularly and whilst I may not always agree with the opinions expressed I'll chuck my twopenneth in or just let it ride however the starring system to me is being abused by some for no apparent reason. I can't understand why trencher has been given abuse on this thread for no justifiable reason. Plus all because AllyG likes a joke and tells us she likes it doesn't warrant 1 star!!

Anyway my mini wibble over and I'm sure this post will now be rated low for giving my opinion but hey ho

I think people are rating people just to wind them up, and it seems to be working. Personally, if you dont like what I say, I would prefer if you said so. I always post from the heart in response to anyone, and if I disagree I say so, and if I think Ally is wibbling too much, I tell her.
Ally, you are wibbling too much.
Re:Is it me?

Hi Everybody,
Is it just me, or has that horrid rating box really gone?

A few days ago the 'latest ski chat' went haywire on my computer and I only had old threads, and now it's come back but the layout is a bit different and no-one has any stars any more and the rating box has gone.

This suits me fine. Has everyone got this, or am I the only lucky one?

I did look up the software systems that do rating, and I can see that Admin would have quite a problem altering the system, because he'd be confined by whatever system he's using. For example, the one I was looking at (for university students) gave the moderators (tutors) the option of only allowing the students to see their own rating, or only allowing the moderators to rate the posts etc.

Ally
