Theft of skis Meribel

Hi

New skier just back from my first weeks ski holiday in La Tania in the 3 Valleys.

Had a great time (once I got out of La Tania as not beginner friendly slopes) until our last day when my partners skis were stolen from outside Le Sporting restaurant in Meribel, 50 yards away from the police station. We had spent most of our time in Courchevel as the slopes were kinder there and my partner had never been to Meribel and didnt know what it was like.

Skis and poles left everyday along the fences, on the ground etc and no problems at all. We had split the ski's on occassion and I guess we got complacent. We went for lunch for 40 mins to return to an empty spot where my partners skis had been. Totally gutted. Put a dampener on the holiday big time. Went to the information office where we were told it didnt happen often.....were directed to the police station, you have to go to the Gendarmerie and not the municipal. Susprisingly all the shop keepers have an excellent hold of english yet the police cant speak english at all, my french wasnt very good either mind you but I dont work in a tourist area.....The officer told us it happened everyday and handed out a form for us to fill in..... I take it it happens so often they have no interest in catching the perpetrators??? No CCTV??? No details asked for us to show where they were placed or anything. Perhaps the cops are helping thierselves, who knows.....they certainly did not seem interested at all.

So, if you are new to skiing and have all the new kit etc dont find yourself GBP400 out of pocket (depends if insurance pays or not, quick enough to take your money but hate giving you it back) swap and lock your skis.

If you are offered an almost brand new pair of Nordica skis and Leki poles without the wrist strap as its still attached to my partners gloves then please give me a shout......

A sour taste has been left in my mouth after this....as did the GBP5 bottle of coke from Bel Air lol....

Moan over....hopefully have something more positive if I ever go on another skiing hol....may just pray for good snow in Scotland every year.... :-)

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

I know it must seem a complete pain in the neck, but it seems sccording to reports it happens a lot in the three valleys area, in thirty years of skiing I have not experienced theft of any kind.
i hope the insurance company pays out.

Hi Dixiefee,
Best of luck with getting your money back - and keep an eye on Ebay!

We've always hired skis, and it seems they don't bother to nick hired ones (at least we've never had ours nicked) and this time our skis actually had 'rental' or something like that written across the length of them.

I'm glad to hear you had a good holiday apart from this. I was in Courchevel a few weeks ago and I reckon it's a great place to ski.

Ally

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

I think ski theft in Meribel featured in another thread so it does seem to be an increasingly frequent problem. On my recent trip to Flaine, I heard of two people having their skis nicked so the problem is not confined to Meribel and at least one of these were hire skis.

In fairness to the police, you cannot really expect them to get excited over opportunistic thefts of gear left lying around unsupervised. However, perhaps it is time for resorts and businesses to provide more secure facilities though whether we would be prepared to pay for them is a whole other question

I guess we all need to be more careful with our gear, especially as insurance companies unlikely to pay out if skis left lying around outside bars and restaurants. Apart from ski splitting, I am not sure what you are supposed to do - bringing the skis into a restaurant is obviously not a runner.

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

It happens everywhere, don't let it put you off a particular resort. Keep an eye on them or lock them up - I wouldn't be surprised if your insurance doesn't pay out on the basis that you left them totally unattended for 40 minutes.

Resorts should start installing the skikey system - it really is great and gives me the illusion of security.

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

What if a restaurant/bar had a ski check outside, with an employee to watch skis. From the sounds of it, they would clean up. Maybe the towns Chamber of commerce could operate ski checks near bars/restaurant/shops.

Trencher

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Hey

Thanks for all the posts...

The skis were within watching distance but like I said we did perhaps become complacent and when nature calls sometimes you cant watch them 100 % of the time anyway.

The restaurant we were in did not have anywhere to put skis and there was nowhere safe to put them within the restaurant so obviously we followed suit of everyone else and put them against the fence line.

Perhaps it is time for these busy resort areas to take a bit of responsibility and install something where skis can be left securely, being new to skiing I dont know what the options are.

I do think in busy areas like the area of Meribel should at least have CCTV, they have it in Courchevel and I know from speaking to people there is not as much of a problem with ski theft over there, perhaps it is a deterent and extra patroling from officers during busy spells would perhaps work. I saw some officers in Courchevel and the only ones I saw in Meribel were in the office asking each other if they wanted a coffee lol...

Its happened now and we can only hope the insurance pays out. It has certainly put me off a little bit but perhaps this is only while it is still fresh, will keep taking lessons and probably pop to the slopes a few times, artificial and indoor snow ones and see what happens next holidays....

Oh and I have my beady eye on ebay already. Not that it will make much difference as we still have to prove the skis were ours, our little scottish flag stickers would no doubt have been pealed off by now...

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Just get a simple cable lock. If someone is determined it won't put them off but it can act as a deterrent to the opportunist.

Next time you buy skis you should record the serial numbers (they are a unique identifier) which is the only real way of telling if they are yours.

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

I have to admit I was worried going to SC last week and leaving desirable skis like my Neo's lying about. I bought locks but never used them in the end. Talking to seasonnaires over there, the only problems they have come across were people staying in bars at valley level late at night and leaving their skis outside unlocked or unattended, and sometimes they walked. Up the mountain, not a problem and I happily left my skis lying on the snow or in a rack outside a cafe where I could not watch them.

Opinion suggets that the 3 Valleys is much more likely a place to experience ski theft, it seems to be a professional business as oppose to mistakingly picking up the wrong skis.

Bottom line - make sure your skis are insured or get a lock for them. Meribel appears to be making more headlines for this kind of thing than anywhere strangely.

Simple really :D

If your skis are insured, then your insurer will expect you to behave as though they were not insured, and be able to evidence this if a claim is made.

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Tony,
I am no expert on this matter, but I would think the insurers would take into consideration normal practice regarding whether skis are locked up or not - and I haven't noticed any locked skis on my holidays. My instructor didn't lock his skis when we went in the cafe for a short break.

One thing that surprises me about all this ski theft, is how do the thieves make off with an extra pair of skis from a mountain cafe without someone noticing that they are either arriving without skis or departing with two pairs of skis. I have hardly ever seen anyone with two pairs of skis - only the odd instructor carrying a pair on his shoulder, presumably after something unfortunate has happened to one of his pupils.

Ally

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Someone tried (and failed) to break the lock securing my skis in the cafe rack at the top of the Trans-Arc in Les Arcs. A little retractable cable lock, I think they were after getting at the metal catch inside the plastic casing. I was sitting outside too, but there were so many folks around it was quite hard to keep your own kit in sight all the time.
Years ago now, but I do lock my skis :D

We never used to have a problem with theft in New Zealand but with growing popularity it is getting worse. security cameras are becoming more widely used at ski resorts here and there are full time security guards on duty on some hills now. damn shame that people have to ruin such a good thing!!

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

I was looking at my NFU Mutual travel insurance policy (for a non-ski holiday) and I happened to notice what it says about ski theft.

In the list of what is NOT insured it says this:

Theft of skiing equipment unless it is:
from a locked building; or
securely locked to an immovable object; or
from an attended vehicle; or
from an unattended motor vehicle, unless it is from a locked boot, concealed luggage compartment or glove compartment and force and violence has been used to get into the vehicle. Where there is no locked boot, concealed luggage compartment or glove compartment and there has been forcible and violent entry to the motor vehicle we will pay up to GBP1,000.

So, in other words the NFU Mutual wouldn't insure anyone for the theft of their skis from outside a cafe unless they'd locked them.

I wonder what the policy from the ski hire shop says?

Ally

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Ski locks are quite small and pocket sized, but most of the cables can be cut through with a Leatherman type of tool. The retractable cable ones can be cut quite easily, and as they are plastic cased easy for someone to break the body of the lock. A bicycle shop might be a good place to look. Consider getting a small chain and a padlock, just as easy to carry.

It's quite normal for insurers to not insure skis left unattended and unsecured.

People in Europe generally have a better grasp of English than we do of their language. It is not ignorance on my part but generally when I visit Europe I fully expect others to have some understanding of our language.
When I go on my hols I would not expect anyone to speak English, I tend to find with the French if you make a little effort they will always help you out, But on saying that with the car breakdown in France last January my Insurance company facilitated a three way conference call with the French police as there was no english spoken by them and my French was not up to scratch.
I wouldn't expect one particular person to speak English but I have never come across someone that has no English ability whatsoever. Always try to speak to local language but usually when they realise that I am not getting anywhere they attempt to speak English and are often grateful of the practice.

Quite a lot of the cable locks are 0.9m, which I've found a bit short in the past. Many bindings have a slot on the heel lever, this is a good place to thread a cable through, or through the brakes as an alternative. Anything which will resist a casual thief.

Year after year ski resort thieves find an endless supply of holidaymakers who have checked in their common sense along with their luggage when they set off.

Probably the same folks who ask where the resort stores the moguls in summer..... )

Back in the early 1990's I was warned about not leaving my skis unsecured in Arc 1600, by my ski teacher. His words were "If you don't like your skis, leave them here, and they will be gone by the time you get back" (from lunch).

The only recent development I know of, is the organised theft using vans, of racks full of skis outside resort bars.

Why should insurance companies refuse to insure skis unless they are in a locked rack? That could put some mountain huts out of business, because they can't lay concrete for a stand base. Many are in protected areas.

But that doesn't seem fair if the locks aren't provided outside cafes.

I would have thought the ski lift companies could pay for the racks out of the money they get from the lift passes - I bet the passes would only have to go up by about 10 pence to pay for them.

Ally

Sorry Bandit,
I meant the insurance companies might all insist that the skis and boards were locked up, not necessarily in one of Pablo's lovely-looking racks, so chains/cables and padlocks provided by the policy holders would also be okay but much less convenient.

Ally

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

Yes. Don't quote me on it but the company makes the majority of their cash on the locks. If not free they are heavily discounted.

They don't need a cashbox. Click AllyGs link to the ski key and find out more about them.

If I was a restaurant I would take the initiative and install a secure place to leave skis. If people are aware of the issues then I bet they would pick the mountain hut with locking racks over the other one (assuming they are fairly similar).

There is a reason all the major resorts in North America have these.

Pablo,
I agree with you on this - we are always looking for the next thing to keep one step ahead of the other holiday cottage providers. Like, for example, we now provide free broadband in our cottages and I am thinking about trying to buy a seasonal ticket so they can park for free in our local beachside car park.

I hope Snowbandit is reading this, so she can keep one step ahead of the opposition in the Alps :D

Ally

Re:Theft of skis Meribel

They are a Canadian based company so I guess it is natural that most of their business in Canada. With the strength of the CND I doubt they are so hot on exports right now.

A single ski rack would cost a European mountain restaurant about 100 euros (5 pairs of skis). If I owned a restaurant I'd be putting money in to buying 5 lots of racks and selling the keys. You'd pull your money back fairly quickly (assuming 'ski key' offer wholesale pricing). It makes great business sense.

I have to admit that the skikey racks have been at all the Canadian resorts I've visited and my friends out there were really surprised I didn't have a lock already. I have to admit that they are really easy and quick to use and at least you then don't have to worry about your skis.

Think I will struggle next time I ski in Europe.....

What I mean is:

• be sensible and minimize your risk
• accept and be comfortable with risk you take
• decide what risk is acceptable for you as an individual
• learn that if you are gonna master this, that you have to embrace nature
• that marketing is the bigger risk in all your lives

x

See Bandits answer, that is exactly what I mean. It's thought about, rationalized and decided. Stop worrying, puck up your skis and get on with it.

If you chose to leave them outside a bar till 2.30am, then understand the risk and move on.
