toilets on the french slopes

yes sorry another bladder issue! lol,not that I am paranoid or anything but following on from my "shewee" debate, I was a bit worried about some of the replies that I got about peeing over holes in the ground. Is this the case? (I am going to Valmorel) do they have these in mountain restaurants or in normal restuarants? sorry to ask these questions but i have never been to France before and the thought of having to squat over one of these holes in the ground, with my ski boots, salopettes and thermals on whilst trying to hold my jacket in one hand and toilet paper in the other, just doesnt fill me with glee

is it regular to find these types of toilets on the slopes? if so, where have you found them so I can compile a list of places to avoid lol

Saw one in Tignes last time I was there. Public loos are often porcelain standers'. French restaurant loos, may have doors and seats, but quite often have coin slots or an attendant to harrass folk for money.

Re:toilets on the french slopes

Karen,
I was really shocked to see one in the newish sports centre in Val Thorens. It's a really huge modern complex of undercover shops with a swimming pool etc. but the toilets were definitely holes in the floor

I'm afraid I didn't even attempt to use them, but went off to find some other ones, which I found in the shower/changing area for the sports hall.

Ally

Re:toilets on the french slopes

I really can't stand the holes in the floor toilets. Came across one in Serre Chevalier last year, and was no amused.

Quite a few in Bormio too!

I also came across quite a few squat pedestal toilets, which are at least a bit easier to use!

I cross out the restaurant on the piste map if they don't have a nice toilet.

In fact on my round the world trip I only found hole in the floor toilets in Malaysia and that was out of 18 countries!

Re:toilets on the french slopes

Its defo more of a French thing rather than european thing, but yes Karen - get used to it as thats what you are likely to find.

Holes in the ground, small toilets with saloon doors, and people expecting you to pay for the privelage too.

Interestingly, we didnt come across any in ADH, but then we tended to use one particular restaurant and our chalet to be honest. Mrs H did complain about the hole in the ground in several mountain cafes in Serre Che last year.

Re:toilets on the french slopes

There is just a technique to using them this is what you do.......

1. Carefully drop sallos and any under garments you may be waring

2. Hook your arm through your sallo braces so they do not flap behind you or it could end up messy.

3. Slightly squat at 45 degrees.

4. Remember right arm holding the sallos braces and left arm behind you against the wall or system pipe

5. Now you should be at the correct angle for a successful number two's

6. Mission accomplished

Re:toilets on the french slopes

Karen,

I must have been very lucky as the last time the hole in the floor loos were a problem in a ski resort for us was in Italy.

You do find them in France, but in my experience they've been few and far between, though in some public loos you actually get a choice between them and normal ones.
Seems some people must prefer them!

They are at the stops off the motorways, but easier to use if not in ski gear and if you stop at the service stations you are unlikely to find them.

Japanese bullet trains have both. I always go for the sit down option!

Its a nightmare when you're skiing, its never happened to me, but imagine being in the 'one hand on the wall' position when your boots lose traction with the suspiciously wet floor......

Another tick in the box for Austria as far as I'm concerned, most of their bogs are classified blue (easy/beginners)!!!

I've only seen one in Perigueux in the Dordogne and didn't use it

*politely put mode*
I've never seen one on the mountains, but we do make the odd refreshment stop where the facilities are, I've found, quite respectable and I've never been so desperate as to go to extreme measures.
*end politely put mode*
The only 'hole in the floor' toilets that I have come across was in ADH recently. It was the ladies toilets in Les Bergers center. They had full length lockable doors I am happy to report!

I've seen alot of these in Serre Ch.....they are ok when you get used to them. Didn't think i'd ever come arcoss them in Europe until I went skiing in France. I first used them driving across Russia, and trust me the one's I found in France are alot higher standard. I still have nightmares about one's in Russia!
