Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!
I saw reference to these by chance on ParalyticSkiCrazie's thread on St Martin De Bellville and they sound like a godsend for my OH as they are in-part designed for the larger footed and calved among us (OH is ex-rugby player and spends every evening on his Concept 2 rower)

Last time we went skiing in January it was almost mission impossible to get his ski boots on (they are his own and fitted the season before but he's obviously put on more muscle since then) so these sound ideal and neither of us knew such a thing existed. PSK said it was the comfiest boot ever and I can see no reason to buy another sort ever again!

Just thought I'd post a separate thread in case there is anyone else out there unaware of this fab innovation and could benefit from a pair.

I have to admit I'd only looked briefly on t'internet but I thought there seemd to be some sites selling new ones, why on earth would they stop making them? Is there some sort of safety issue with them?

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

I'm no expert but I just think things have moved on and they just aren't made like that anymore.

I'm sure there's no safety issue or anything.

Found this on the web...

Rear-Entry Boots
Rear Entry ski boots became popular during the mid 1990's due to the fact that they were so easy to put on. As they aren't as fashionable these days, they can often be found at discount prices selling at even garage sales, so it is best to keep a look out in your local area.

However, these boots are not ideal for professional and advanced skiers as they do not seem to be able to perform to high standards of skiing. They are ideal for cruising around and light skiing, but overall more modern boots are recommended for the advanced skier.

Why not just see a boot fitter about your current boots? Buckles can be moved etc, I am sure if they are correctly fitted boots then they can be adapted to fit growth.

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

you're quite right Pablo, having read a bit more about rear entries (ooh, matron) they do seem a bit basic and a step backwards unless your need is desperate like PSC.

I did suggest that to OH in Jan but he threw his toys out of the pram and insisted that if they fitted last year they should fit this year - we don't have our own skis so maybe I could hijack him when we go and get them!

Only 3 weeks to Val Cenis - hooray.

You are only 40 miles or so from CEM in Bicester who, by all accounts, is great at what he does. Why not make the trip? Either that or see if you can change your buckles over yourself. I moved mine and all it took was a few turns with an allen key.

It's not so much the doing it up although that was a bit difficult to start with, it was the actual struggle of getting the boots on that was the biggest problem. Can re-fitted help with that do you think?

Yes. If mine were in the cold I would need to wait for them to reach room temp. before I could get them on. Keep them in the room.

Heck yes. I have a warming box at home for my boots. After that, they go in a thermal insulated bag side by side, but facing each other. I place a very hot heat pack wrapped in a tea towel between the boot fronts. They stay warm for hours, and putting them on is a breeze. It also means the plastic comforms when you buckle them up, for a perfect fit.
I have boots that I have used 70+ times per season for three seasons, and the plastic has not suffered from the heat.

The only problem with hard to get into boots, is getting out of them when they are very cold. I see a few people using hair dryers to get their boots off after racing.

Trencher

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

Well spotted folks, cold boots appears to be the problem.

Pablo, a member of our family bought a pair of Nordica rear entries just last year, in Saas Fee. It appears that the manufacturer's production plan for these boots, is based on batch size of 5000 boots ~ and they keep getting sufficient orders.

Not only that, but the shop supplied replacement heel and toe bases for my OH's Nordica ~ 20 years old! What service! Having said that, she has regretted not just buying another pair, while she was there.

Can't find a replacement for my Reichle though. Both you and Bandit supplied me with a web site, but on neither occasion was I able to source through to Reichle.

I just love mine to bits. Easy to get on, ONE CLIP PER BOOT,so I'm usually half way up the T bar before Mel has got his first boot on. Dead comfy, like slippers. And ~ most important, for my dodgy knee ~ when it comes to taking the boot off, the rear opens up wide, and I am not wrenching the knee to get the foot out.

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

So, I went into the hardware store in town today, looking for some gaffer tape to effect a repair to the aforesaid rear entry boots. I was accompanied by the guide dog, looking very smart, in the blue coat.

A blonde lady walks across, and asks if she can help. I told her I was looking for Duct tape. She takes me by the arm, and starts to lead me through the aisles. I was thinking, "Aye, Davie Mac, you never lose it". Blonde lady stops beside some shelving, takes my hand, and puts a roll of tape into it. "Great stuff, lass, but wrong colour"

She looked dumbstruck, "Oh, you're not blind then?" -)

That's funny Dave. Kind of interesting though, as I don't think it would happen in many parts of the US. People here look each other intently in the eye when talking. As a Brit, it's sometimes disconcerting to be stared at by someone so close by.

Trencher

When I did my OU degree, Trencher, I spent a lot of time in Physcology lectures. (I was meant to be in the electronics lecture, but the Physcos had a lot of women!)

I took away from that a learning of body language, and of maintaining eye contact. These two things enabled me to move forwards workwise, far more quicker than any of the electronics stuff.

Evidently I did not make eye contact today!

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

Oh, and the funny thing was, I did get the right tape, and carried out a good repair to the upper rear of the boot liner. The foam inner had split.

And the tape? Was carpet tape. You remember the carpet story, Trencher? -)

Re:Rear Entry Ski Boots!!!

I used to have rear entry boots back in the day, when every oher person complained about how uncomfortable they were. Modren boots seem to give you so much better control, but like OH I have trouble getting them on. I've had them for years so maybe my feet have got bigger or something. My tips: definitely keep them in a warm place, try wearing ski socks with thinner fabric around the foot, push your hand in first and squidge it about before you put your foot in, pull the tongue forward as far as you possible can, ease in slowly and feel your way in. Once my feet are in, my boots feel perfect, but it's quite a performance!
