Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Was not wearing a helmet the cause? Probably just speculation and the govt.s way of dealing with it looks like a knee jerk reaction (similar to Italy's after the avalanches a week or two ago).

Until more facts are established I doubt it could be 'yet another reason to wear a helmet'.

You can give one star if you think the post is poor and up to five stars depending on how good you think the post is. I don't see the point really.

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Without doubt, ski helmets are the latest fashion icon on the slopes! Ive just returned from a trip to austria and id say 80% of people were wearing helmets. Seeing kids skiing without helmets is a thing of the past; got myself one and I have to say they are much comfier than I ever imagined. They keep your head much warmer :) yet have good ventilation, and I skiing without a helmet will soon be illegal - you couldnt get on a motorbike and travel at 40km/hr without one, but then again i skied for years without a helmet and Im still alive to tell the tale

No, what you mean is that because more people are wearng helmets, the designers have made them more fashionable.
I doubt you'd see anyone wear a ski helmet to pop into town in back here in the UK.
But they have become more fashion conscious for sure.
Doesnt make me want to get one though.

I'd never look down on anyone without a helmet. I vary rarely, if ever, look down on anyone.

Out of 18 adults, none of whom wore a helmet last year, I'll be interested to see how many decide to wear one this year. Three of us have bought one so far. There'll be no pressure from me though.

I mean, whether or not someone else wears a helmet doesn't affect your own safety, unless of course they forget they're wearing it and stand too close and turn round quickly and klonk you with it

Ally

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Tony,
Maybe he's not being sarcastic, and he really does mean 'heroes'. I knew an old WW2 fighter pilot once, and you wouldn't catch him wearing a seat belt (before they were compulsory I mean).

And I'm not exactly a hero, but I simply can't stand wearing a bicycle helmet. In my time I've biked hundreds, if not thousands of miles around London - including round Hyde Park corner, Marble Arch, even accidentally once on the M4 (a long story) without one, and without any sort of accident. I love the feeling of the wind on my hair, and the sense of freedom I get from being on a bicycle. If bicycle helmets ever become compulsory I might just give up riding a bike. It wouldn't be the same at all.

Whereas, for some strange reason, I don't object to my ski helmet at all - in fact I've become quite fond of it during the course of my week's ski holiday. Maybe it's because I've always skied in a woolly hat, whereas I've always gone bare-headed on my bicycle.

Just do what you want to do, on the ski helmet issue, Tony, and don't worry about everyone else. Unless helmets become compulsory the choice is yours.

Ally

At the end of the day, bobble hats are cool, helmets are cool.
Peoples choices are choices at the moment.
Not injuring yourself when falling cannot be guaranteed by wearing a helment (depends on how and where you fall).
The amount of deaths on the slopes that are attributed to not wearing a helmet are a small %age out of the total.

Afterall, it is funny to wear a helmet.
Look at SS Schnitzeldork in Serre Chevalier

It's about a year since Natasha Richardson died and the helmet debate came up on the radio today.
Sounds inevitable it will become law & apparently sales of helmets are up 60% since her death.

I think it's a shame - people should be allowed to make own decisions. They always use the bicycle helmet argument - but they aren't compulsory and I think cycling is more dangerous.

No - don't have any stats, just makes sense when roads/concrete/cars involved that you're more likely to get hurt.

Aw b*******s I thought this thread had died, obviously it has it's helmet on.

The day they make helmets compulsary is either the day I change destination, or the day I give up. I am considering a helmet cos I'm getting into my jumps, but if some eurocrat in Brussels tells me how to protect myself against myself I will be mighty peeved. I will be horrified if I can't slide down a deserted glacier in May in a t-shirt feeling the sun and wind. If my not wearing a helmet would potentially endager others, I would look at it differently. I simply won't do something just because I'm told to. Everyone, be they helmet heads or not should oppose a legislative change, it's simply another example of nanny state-ism.

Pah!

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet
Yes,its me again just got up, another sleepless night with my right shoulder
in agony. A week now since I crashed out onto the icy pathway to the lift at
Big White. I collected no one and yet my skis were 20 metres away and i remember
my face, crashing and sliding into the icy snow. Yes, lucky i had my helmet on.
The right side took the full brunt, no memory of what happened with my right arm.
Just two days off and then finished last two days skiing very slowly.
My brother, the Bowens masseuse took me to see his sports injuries workmate yesterday.
No, not the AC joint, just ripped up my biceps upper and middle. 2 weeks of more pain :(
The helmet thread, i recall reading it a while ago, so thats why i added to it
with my observations of Big White, Canada. I was there for 12 days and was amazed with
the locals high uptake of helmet wearing.

I also defend peoples right to make their own decision with helmet wear.
Wow, my careless use of the word "heroes".
Oops sorry

Vince

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Vinci, no need to apologise for your post, made some sentient points. I think Tony's point is, if I may "why is this a debate?" helmets are available for those who want them, and severe brain injury is a possibility for both those who do and don't want to wear them. Nobody here is so naive to think there is no risk, however some are prepared to push risk-benefit further. Anyone who challenges that is somewhat foolish as it's personal. If my lack of helmet increased the chances of a small child being chopped in half then we should debate and reach consensous. As it is, my decision will only harm me and that's up to me. We've had this year on year and it never dies, question is why are we discussing it in the first place????

So personal pleasure is not benificial then, personally I find it exceptionally tangible. Using your logic, I could ask the question why go skiing at all? I mean it's a lot more risky than sitting on the couch watching others do it. Oh, I know, it's because we enjoy it.

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Hi guys, I have only read the last 2 pages of this thread and I can see it is starting to get a bit heated.

I think that whilst the choice to wear a helmet in resort is there it should be exactly that, "a choice". Some people prefer to wear one for whatever their own personal reasons.

We choose to wear helmets. One of the main reasons I chose to wear a helmet is because I expect the kids to wear a helmet and I want to lead by example. That is my own personal choice, I am not saying that all parents who have kids wear helmets should wear a helmet themselves, that is up to me and no one else.

To be honest, I never really took any notice about who was wearing helmets on the slopes or not and certainly wouldnt look at them any different if they didnt have a helmet, that is entirely up to the individual.

Anyway I wanted to lighten this up a bit and as I like my kids to wear helmets I thought I would make them stand out from the crowd, and they certainly got a few comments and while their kids, they can get away with it, I refrained from getting me and hubby a mowhawk for our helmet.

I have embedded a pic as I think they look cute, (but I am biased ) Not only that though, it helped me identify them on the slopes straight away when I went into panic mode when they zoomed off without me lol.

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

I read an article yesterday in a local paper about the avalanche deaths this year. Partially due to a very big accident where 7 people died there has been a very large increase in the number of people killed. Initial reaction is "freeriders" young people going out and getting themselves killed off piste. But the newspaper actually researched deeper. A lot of the deaths occurred in the back country a long way from controlled areas, a lot of these deaths were people who did not carry Avalanche transcievers, a lot of these people were older more experienced ski tourers... NOT Freeriders!!! The article actually went on to say that many freeriders are very well prepared, trained and carry as much safety equipment as they can get their hands on!!!

What has this to do with helmets?

Well the argument these people use for not having transcievers in the back country. I never used one before so why should I start now. They look down on the young whipper snappers who buy the equipment and get themselves trained up, and think because they never had an accident before they won't now!!!

Does that attitude seem familiar?

P.S. Saying somebody looks like a numpty for wearing a helmet is highly irresponsible in my book. Firstly its your opinion, secondly it has the potential to put someone off buying a helmet who would otherwise get one because of "not looking cool". I personally happen to think that these days its the people without the helmets that look like "Numpties". I put them in the same basket as the people I see going down 40+deg uncontrolled runs with no backpack and no clue!

I believe Benny from Crossroads wore a woolly hat (on and off the slopes) and he wasn't exactly the chairman of ICI, was he?

I think this argument has run its course - time for the mods to put it out of its misery!

Re:Yet another reason to wear a helmet

Is a numpty a beginner? It is where I come from.

So, helmet or not, it is clear whether you are just starting out or not.

What's the matter with being a numpty anyway? We all gotta start somewhere.

(ps I look like I am on day release in mine so Tony right in my case) ) )

Just thought I'd add - up to the individual in my opinion. I don't care if others wear them or not I just decided I would.
