:Dhas any body booked yet,i booked today even though i have a couple more trips this season to go , ilove skiing but it is rearly getting costly .but your only here once

going to les arc 1950 not a bad price tried to book it for this jan but it was full so we ended up in 1800 .which i enjoyed, so when we got back i booked for next year, which is unusual as i normaly go to different resorts each year,going to samoens in 3 weeks and val thorens at the end of the season

Charlie,
I've been to Val Thorens twice now, my daughter and I really liked it. There are plenty of long runs in all directions and the lift system is really fast and efficient, and we liked being able to ski in and ski out so that we could easily get back to our apartment for lunch.

Les Arcs is somewhere else we've been thinking about (as well as St Anton). Does it have any trees or is it all really high up like Val Thorens?

there are trees on both sides of the resort on the left down to villaroger and on the right to vallandry , when there you can hop overto la plagne which has plenty of trees to play in , imo its a great resort

Nae idea. I have where I 'want' to go but trying to fit it in around Uni and making it a worth while trip at a time of year I'd like to go is definitely difficult. I wanted to go all the way around stopping in Japan and then in SLC (or similar) before coming home to ski the best place in the world... Scotland. Don't get exams in January though so that pretty much limits me to early April or Christmas :(

Not had this year's yet (Mayrhofen) but Montana is looking good for us for next year. Big Sky and Bridger Bowl are on the list as they're very close to where friends live. Looking to go to one of the other Montana resorts for a few days maybe Whitefish.

My sis in law has a place in Whitefish. A sandwich bar/restaurant.
Moved there last November, enjoying life there, but has found it hard going with the recession etc.

Loves the skiing though was saying the other day that they could do with a bit more snow.

I actually didn't realise you could book this early for next year. I've got a couple more trips to look forward to this year and then will start thinking of next year.

This next 6 months may be a very difficult time for me, so not making any big plans for 2011 season just yet. Going to make the most of the 2 remaining trips this season and take it from there.
I do however plan to get to Arabba next season if possible.

Been to Grindelwald twice in early Jan. Never had snow problems. There may not be much in town but there's usually plenty once you're up the lifts.

Its not that he does'nt want ski holidays, he loves them too. But we hope to be buying a property, partly as rental/investment but mainly for a place to retire too. So all funds will be put into that if its a viable idea.

Wengen can get quite shady down in the town but up at Kleine Scheidegg and over in Mannlichen & Grindelwald there's plenty of sun

Planning my second ski hol after the success of my first hol. We are looking at Cervinia around end of Jan beginning of Feb time thoughts and views welcome.

Also when is Scotland usually ski friendly from if its early December can ayone recommend a small B&B for a short pre christmas break. Not bothered where just somewhere for a quick cheap midweek ski break again any advice welcome thanks

If any-one had asked us say two years ago it would have been Austria, but now the plan is to retire to Greece. Hence back to Kefalonia in June. It could be a villa but looking into large plot of land/small holding that could have a modest property built on it. We have done quite a lot of research.

I'm biased towards Grindelwald. I've not stayed in Wengen so cannot comment fully on the hotels etc. Grindelwald is a lovely quiet town especially in early Jan. Mens World Cup downhill racing early Jan and the Snow Festival the week after add to the interest. Few nice bars nothing raucous and some nice hotels. I've stayed in the Sunstar both times but the Derby, Eiger and Belvedere are equally good. Some don't like the transport system. If you want to get from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg it's about an hour by bus and train. But the journey is very scenic.
Lifts to Grindelwald First ski area are right outside the Sunstar hotel. This area is the sunnier side and good for wide blues and reds. Shuttle bus service runs around the town to all main lift stations and the railway station and is on your ski pass. Loads for non skiers to do. Many people go there just to walk and there's plenty of marked trails on the mountains.
Wengen is traffic free and can only be reached by train from Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg or via the lift system from Mannlichen.

I will be there on the 27th Feb, with wife, son, and d-I-l. This year, being a re-union year, there will be a large group of us, mostly centred on the Bichlwirt, at night. Which hotel are you based at?

Ok, so i am looking at France for Jan 2011. Maybe Tignes or Maybe La Plagne.

But heres the thing, i want to go the first week in Jan. This is be because 1st-7th will be good for me work wise, great for my daughter as less time off school.
However it appears that there maybe no sat-sat package deals. All the brouchers and sites seem to be offering 5 day packages that week running from the monday???
WTF? don't they fly on new years day?? Gutted.

We had the same last time NY fell on a Saturday. Transfer dates were all on the Monday. Seems like the norm.

Nope! Doesn't look like it.

Crystals brochure shows that France is normally a Saturday departure but prior to xmas they run monday to monday.
Then they switch back to Sat/Sat from the 8th Jan. This means that the first week in Jan is cut to 5 crappy days!!!

No France for me then. Looks like Andorra (sunday dept) for my Jan trip. May look at france for easter.

Maybe, but as this is only going to be our second trip i like the idea of having all my eggs in one basket and being looked after until i know what i am doing!

You're not serious - first (and IMO best) week in Jan has been cut to 5 days in the brochures? Thats an absolute outrage!!!! How very dare they.

I think it's everywhere in Europe. I was chatting to our agency, and they told me they want folks to book 2 weeks over Xmas and New Year, because they can't get the staff for the handovers work.

Gotta say Tony that my first instict was to blame the french, why wouldnt we??

But i think it is more likely that it is the TO's that are doing this so people can have a full week over xmas or new year. I know i would prefer monday to monday and not have to travel on xmas day.
Christmas week is a big money spinner for them is it not?
I think that it would be better though if they did this just over xmas and not carry it too new year.

It seems to be just the destinations that involve saturday flights, france and austria.
Andorra and Italy, sunday departures seem unaffected

If you really want to do a full week at the start of January just DIY. Accommodation and flights can be had on the super cheap then anyway.
