Re:2 Days To Go

Bandit and Ally G who post on here have skied VT. I learned there about 8 years ago, but dont remember too much about the place, apart from it being wide open and awful in bad weather, with limited nightlife, a good Italian restaurant down the hill towards the P&V apartments, and ski in/out mainly.
Oh, and being charged GBP25 for a single brandy.......damn the French!

Hello,Long time reader, first time poster!

Went to Val Thorens in '05. Very good place, loads of ski area, but a little bit limited in terms of scenary, no trees due to the altitude!
I believe the highest pub in Europe is there too, spotted Tim Healy of Auf Weidersehen fame! All inall, guarenteed snow, fun runs, and a decent-ish nightlife.

Re:2 Days To Go

VT has lots of very high skiing. Should be very enjoyable if weather is nice - very exposed in bad weather.

On one previous trip to Sauze, we took a day trip to VT via Val Frejus, as I recall. One thing to note - at that time the run down from the gondola was either a black or a pretty demanding red. Definitely not beginner territory. However that was a good few years ago and they may have opened up some easier links in the interim.

Enjoy your trip.

Matty

I am assuming you mean the Orelle access to VT is close. You can get an extension on your VF pass from the ticket station at Orelle and there is a bus provided on Wednesdays for 7.50 E's. If going over I would advise you to check the weather forcasts as the link up can be closed in high winds and the drive back would be 160 km!!

Also if going with nervous intermediates take the Cime Caron Cable Car down as you only have a Red (with a steep road section at the top) or a Black down into VT. The skiing is great once down with lots of cruisy blues but there are challenging reds and blacks too of you wish. You could feasibly go across to Meribel and back if you get up early enough but would need a 3V Pass.

I love the Mauriennaise red down to Orelle which is long and steep in places but the views over the southern alps are fantastic.

Enjoy Valfrejus - it looks a lovely village.

Re:2 Days To Go

We were ski-ing in Orelle once, and it was incredibly foggy, so that you could hardly see your skis, let alone where you were going. I nearly fell over because I couldn't see if I was ski-ing uphill or downhill
We'd come over from Val Thorens, where it was nice and sunny, so it was a bit of a shock. I guess the weather in the mountains is very variable and unpredictable. I also seem to remember a bit at the top where it was very windy and flat and you had to pole your way along.

But I thought the Orelle valley was really beautiful - nice and quiet, and Val Thorens was great, plenty of ski-ing of all sorts to suit everyone.

Ally

Re:2 Days To Go

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the tips and hints

I think a trip to VT and La Norma will be on the cards and I might be able to grab some off piste in the afternoon once I've finished teaching a five year old to ski. :D

Judging by the weather yesterday the hardest part could be getting to Dover to catch the ferry lol

Here's looking forward to a busy half term week's skiing

Matt
