Songs to Ski to

When the pistes aren't busy and you're having a solo session it can be nice to put a soundtrack to your skiing.

I was just wandering what songs you guys like to listen to when on the slopes?

Not really a fan of listening to music, i find myself focusing more when I'm actually listening to the turns and everything else around me; however when i do i like to listen to a bit of Kasabian

I havent played music whilst skiing as i'm still not really confident enough to do so, but Kasabian by Kasabian would work well, also most rock/metal :)

Personal favourites of mine to ski to are

Kasabian - Reason is treason
Arcade Fire - Laika
Doves - Pounding (funnily enough being used on Ski Sunday right now)
Stone Roses - I am the Resurrection (album version)

Well i love my music and always have my iPod on.
i found the Black Eyed Peas latest album worked well on the piste.

I don't think I could ski with earphones in ... I need to hear what's going on around me.

at the moment, Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro are getting the most plays on my Ipod...they make you go faster!!

Now you see you can't just name a group and say they are good to ski to. They may be your favourite artists, but I certainly wouldnt want to ski to Fake Plactic Trees or the accoustic version of Times Like These, as great as they are in their own right.

Arctic Monkeys - Dancing Shoes, Perhaps Vampires is a bit strong but..., Crying Lightning, Still Take You Home,

Charlatans - Over Rising, The Only One I Know

Interpol - PDA, Slow Hands, Roland

And almost anything by Pixies.

I've got an iPod shuffle I always take skiing, with c.200 songs I love skiing to. Also because the new shuffles are so small they're less inconvenient and less likely to break. I wouldn't risk a big iPod touch on the slopes, or at least not until I get better at skiing!

If I'm looking for speed then "Nu Metal" gets me going everytime, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Sum 41.

If I'm concentrating on form then I tend to go for Stereophonics or Travis, something about them just seems calming and suits the views of the alps, in my opinion.

I've skiied with my iPhone 3G for two seasons now and as long as its in an inside pocket I've never felt it was in any danger.

Agreed. My iPhone (in hard case) felt pretty safe.
You should look at jailbreaking and installing 'Glove Pod' as this allows you to change tracks by clicking the volume up and down buttons. Taking your gloves off to use the touchscreen can be a real PITA.

I have a similar option on my shuffle: there's a small volume control device a few inches below the right headphone. You can press it to skip tracks forward or back. That's if you're confident using one hand to change song instead of controlling your descent... But I suppose the value of having a 250 song shuffle is that I only have songs I want to listen to on there!

I have a pair of Motorola S9's for my iPhone which I cannot recommend enough, although they do make it hard to find a hat that covers your ears.

Last season they allowed me to skip tracks without touching my iPhone, but unfortunately, since they updated to OS 3.0, the fwd/back functions don't work! Hoping (unrealisticly) that this'll be fixed by another update before my 6th March ski trip!

I always thought the S9's looked really uncomfortable and to be honest i dont trust the BT to be that reliable for streaming.

that's a bit extreme really, all you need is different gloves :)

Well, i know you can get gloves like the 'e-tip' that will work the iphone but to be honest i didn't want the expense as i already have decent gloves.
I have good playlists set up but sometimes just want to skip or repeat a track and 'Glove Pod' does just that for free. It also means i can do it without taking it out of my pocket and blind.

I would recommend anyone with a iPhone to Jailbreak it. It is so simple and perfectly safe. The additional functionality you can get is great, not mention free apps! But lets not talk about that.

that would be useful, I can tell you that definitely my Craft gloves work fine as I use them all the time, I think some of my Mammut, Marmot and Black Diamond ones do as well. It might be some of the materials used in mountaineering and nordic gear just works though.

The S9's are surprisingly comfortable. They grip the side of your head like a pair of Oakleys rather than all the way round like a headband (I can actually get my hand between them and the back of my head.

You do have to put them on before a pair of Oakleys though otherwise they try to overlap.

The signal quality is fine as long as you put the iPhone in a pocket that doesn't get covered by the movement of your arms (less of a problem if you use polls I'd imagine).

The one (big) downside with them is the inability to skip track, as I mentioned. I plug a Sony BT adapter in and pair with that instead which provides full functionality.

I've never jailbroken my iPhone but am tempted if I can get the Voice Control feature from the 3GS on my 3G.

As i said Tony, i do have playlists.
But sometimes you just want to Skip or replay a track when the mood takes you.

Sometimes, depends on where you are, and how busy the area is. I do sometimes find it off putting if there are a lot of people about and need to concentrate harder than normal, in which case I dont use the ipod.

I'm sorry buddy but I gotta disagree, I really think it is dangerous not to be 100% focused on you're skiing, you need your wits about you with so many idiots around, remember it's a jungle out their :wink:

Jungles are hot, Ian! However, I agree with you about not listening to music, when skiing. Or rather, staying alert, and being fully aware. Skiing is a wonderful way of life, but there are dangers.

I have twice been wiped out, on both occasions there was a split second of sound, which allowed me to brace against the impact. One of these would have put me out of the game for a good while, as it was, the other guy needed treatment.

I'm with these guys. Furthermore, in addition to the importance of having your wits about you when skiing, I just love the peace and quiet at other times, such as the gentle quiet rise on a chairlift or the beautiful silence of the mountain when you take a breather in a quiet spot. Oooh! I went all poetic just there :mrgreen: .

Apart from that, this thread just makes me feel old :evil: I hardly recognised a single band named on the thread and don't own an iPod, MP4 player or any other such device :shock: :shock: :shock:
