Where to go for snow in April?

Suffering recently with a severe case of Tax Return phobia, I reluctantly bit the bullet (fine looming!)and my trepidation was proved unfounded. As a result of this I'm now getting a nice little rebate- enough to get another week's skiing in this season. :-D

Some of you gave me some advice a while ago as to whether I should skint myself to get my own boots, or go away on hols again. The general consensus was rather predictably, to go for both........ and now I can without having to eat weetabix for a month!

So, here's the question. Where's the best resort likely to be in April in terms of snow? I know its a way off yet but it would be great to get some suggestions from some people who have skied at this time in the year.

Cheers in advance

Re:Where to go for snow in April?

Hi,

April is a great time for a ski trip which many people seem to miss out on i find, once Easter has been and gone tthey seem to think the ski season is over.

Look around for resorts with skiing from 1600m - to up and over 3000m and if they have a glacier thrown in thats a sign that the area is pretty snowsure, also having slopes face in a North/North Easterly direction means they will keep the snow longer....also check out when the last skiable day in the resort is for example Val D'Isere usually closes around the 5-6 May, and Les Arcs i think is the 25th april this year.

Some good resorts to look at are below.

Val D'Isere
Tignes
Les Arcs
Courmayeur
Meribel
Val Thorens
St Anton
Zurs
Serre Chevaliere
Cervinia

Also it's not uncommon to have large dumps of snow right up to the end of the season, on a number of occasions i have been out for the last weeks of a particular season and had the pleasure of fresh powder on the last day which ends the trip wonderfully.

All the best

jon. :D

Re:Where to go for snow in April?

lucky you  that must've been a nice surprise :D

I was in Tignes in April last year and we got tons of snow. It does get slushy but a lot of people don't mind this. Obergurgl is a good shout late season too.

Bear in mind the school holidays. Ours are from 2nd April for two weeks.

Re:Where to go for snow in April?

School hols are my nemesis TBH but the OH is a teacher so i'm stuck having to pay over the odds. I keep trying to get her to organise a school ski trip- getting paid to go skiiig sounds good to me but she won't have it!

I'm torn between booking something now (and paying top whack) or waiting for a last minute deal. Last minute would mean i could pick the best snow destination but availability could be risky. Whichever way, its a nice decision to have to make!

Cheers for the advice.

Re:Where to go for snow in April?

I was in Les Arcs last Easter (early April)...fabulous time. Bit hardpack in the morning and slushy by mid afternoon..Even though it was Easter the queues were fairly tolerable ..I think the French had headed for the beaches.. lots of dutch/belgians about.. the run down to Villaroger was getting pretty worn but they managed to keep a strip of snow (3-4M wide) all the way down to the pub at the bottom
