And what a fantastic week we had

Weather was fantastic, Snow was great, food in our catered chalet was to die for and the staff were top notch. A big up to Nielson for organising everything for us again this year  And and even bigger thankyou to Olly & Alyssa our chalet staff for looking after all 16 of us.

I'll post some pics later once I've uploaded them

If anyone has thought about staying in Meribel, I wouldnt hesitate in recommending it... The best skiing in Europe

"The best skiing in Europe"

My, that is a sweeping statement.
Any particular reasons why?

I have to be honest and say its a place, along with Courchevel, that I have deliberately avoided because of the reputation of rip off prices and the rah rah brigade.

That was a very polite version of what a mate of mine said the place was full of last Feb. I think it sounded like chuck up flankers.

Re:We're back from Meribel

The 3Vs certainly used to have the best lift system of any resort I've ever been to, to the extent that I'd reckon you'd get 20% more skiing a day than in somewhere such as Tignes/Val D'Isere.

There's a fantastic range of slopes - not surprising for the biggest ski area in the world (it used to be larger than the largest 6 north american resorts combined).

Expense wise it will be no worse than any other major Tarantaise resort and the lift pass is better value than in many resorts.

Go in February, especially around half term and you're likely to find lots of plonkers in other Tarantaise resorts, plus Verbier, St anton and Zermatt.

Meribel has the biggest choice of chalets of any resort, with loads of long established small specialists who knock spots off the mass market guys.

The 3Vs is certainly high up in the top 10 ski areas on the plant, but as with any resort, might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Re:We're back from Meribel

One gondola ride from either Meribel or Mottaret to the top of Saulire - c.20 mins then a blast down the bowl to 1850 - 5-7 minutes.

From 1850 to the top of Saulire is two lifts (gondola + cable car), c 25 mins, and a blast down to Meribel: 7-9 minutes. :D

Looking forward to your pics Stamford - have stayed in Courchevel 1650 and in Reberty. Ski area is fantastic. Thinking of a last minute deal in March to link up with son and boarder chums who have a deal in Meribel/Mottaret.

Re:We're back from Meribel

Stamford,
We are staying in Courchevel 1550 for Feb half-term. We've been to Val Thorens twice before, so we have actually skied through Courchevel before, but never stayed there.

There must be some decent people in Courchevel - after all, we're going there :D

I'm looking forward to your photos, thanks very much,

Ally

Re:We're back from Meribel

I stayed at Courchevel 1650 a few years ago and loved it!! I don't remember it being any more expensive than any other resort.

I still haven't booked my trip in March (too many options - still researching!), but Courchevel is now on the cards!

Re:We're back from Meribel

Have been to Courcheval area a few times, mainly La Tania Le Praz would say no more exspensive than any other major resort. If you choose to eat slope side towards 1850 or in centre then you will pay heaps, those places are not set up for people on chalet holidays or in appartments.
Had a look on website and found a chalet for 27million so a few people
are not bothered what the cost of anything is.But you can get cheap food in the centre of 1850 from the take away next to the Kallico.
Superb slopes, off piste, and lifts will be back this year.
Goff

Every1 to there own i suppose. Ive been to Meribel and didnt like it, then just been to Les Menuire and had a great time. The best skiing in Europe up to now for me has been Arabba. A beautiful place, cheap (compared to 3v) friendly people, lift system excellent. Most of all my better half loved it and if the boss is happy Im happy!

Re:We're back from Meribel

Hi all,

Just came back from two weeks in merbiel and it was fantastic skiing. Chalet was great fun with a group of friends and highly recommended.

Would i stay there again? Probably not. I found the slopes are not as well looked after as in Val Thorens and Courchevel. Even with a dump of snow the slopes back to the village were preety poor. I would ski that area again though and stay in VT probably. The lifts make it so easy to get everywhere and only a few are slow.

Pub prices were high...but exchange rate doesnt help and probably the same in any resort with a captive crowd. i found pints ranging from 4 euros in Cactus at happy hour up to 6.50 in Barometer. Food wasnt too bad as long as you dont eat in the mountain restuarants. And the burgers in 'Scotts' were great!

Ninder
