Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

Better off at TK Maxx buying better quality brands at cheap prices mate. D2B is not great, although a lot better than it used to be, and Regatta is not ski stuff really, although some of their gear serves a purpose such as fleeces and waterproofs.

I may well be wrong, but I think Regatta own D2b. My daughter has D2b ski trousers and has no problem with them.

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

I like d2b. I have a d2b ski jacket, which I bought in Austria 3 years ago. It has loads of pockets, including one on the sleeve for a ski pass, zipper air-vents that you can unzip for extra ventilation under the arms, a big, roomy hood which can be removed, it's really warm and waterproof and has a snow skirt. What more do you need? :-o

Allie

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

Allie,
I'm glad you like your D2B jacket. I had a look at their sale (thanks Sm4sh) and I've bought some new larger ski trousers (in case I can't slim down in time - if I do I'll send them back) for GBP39 after a 40% reduction, and base layer leggings for GBP10 after a 60% reduction, and a base layer top for GBP10 after a 66% reduction.

I'm ashamed to say I've been wearing some ordinary leggings and ordinary cotton T-shirts under my ski stuff for the last 6 years  :D

Ally

Ally - me too. I know what people say about proper base layers blah blah, but when money was tight we spent it on outerwear. And we wear the much-maligned tube socks, shock horror!

I've been wearing tube socks for the last 6 years as well, without a problem, but this year I've bought a couple of pairs of the merino wool fitted ones to see if I can notice any difference.

And my first few years back on the ski slopes I wore my ordinary jacket, with a zip in liner/fleece, because it is a perfectly good jacket - Peter Storm - and I didn't see why I should buy another one. The only reason I bought a new jacket was because my daughter said I was embarassing her, and actually I don't think my new ski jacket is as good as my Peter Storm normal jacket. Maybe when she leaves home and I start ski-ing without her I'll go back to my old jacket

Ally

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

My new ski trousers I bought from D2B in their sale turned up today, and I'm really cross. My old ones were 'Animal' size 12 and I'm a bit fat for them at the moment, so I ordered some more from D2B in their sale, size 14. And I've just tried them on, and they're exactly the same size as my old size 12 ones!

And what's more, I've always worn cotton leggings underneath, because nylon etc. makes me itch, but after listening to everyone going on about how bad cotton is as a base layer, I thought I'd better get some proper thermal leggings from D2B and I only had them on for about 2 minutes and now I'm all itchy!

So, tomorrow I will have to work out how to return my shopping. Honestly, what a waste of time

Ally

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

My advice? Buy second hand. I recently bought a Gore-Tex XCR Eider ski jacket for GBP60 from ebay. I'll be looking in to salopettes too, since I managed to slice the ankle of my trespass ones to pieces with my ski edges (yes, yes, I know my stance was too narrow). My experience with the cheaper makes has been anything but favourable, but then again I think I get warmer than most when I'm skiing so it's breath-ability rather than insulation that's the big factor for me.

I did manage to grab a bargain in TK Maxx the first time I went there though, obliviously picking up a Killy shell for GBP70, not really knowing they were such a decent make. It's definitely possible to strike gold there, but not a common occurrence I would say.

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

Ally - always try on before you buy. If you are buying online, go into a shop that stocks the brand to see how their sizes come up.
Looks like you've got a bit of work to do on the fitness regime yet then if you can't get into a 14 )
Animal tend to come up large as well
As for base layers, I'd love to have Merino wool but my skin doesn't agree with it. I have to admit my thermal bottom layers are 50% cotton as thats nice and soft, and I wear breathable polyester base layers normally, something like Adidas Climacool.

Gooseh - the Killy stuff is fairly good, and I saw the shell jacket you were on about, so you've got yourself something smart there at a decent price.

Salski,
It's okay, I don't really mind, but thank you for defending me

It's entirely my own fault for eating too much Christmas pud, chocolate, crisps, etc. etc. I can't pretend that anyone has been force feeding me :D

And Bandit, I'm just airing what I imagine is a pretty common problem - people having difficulty getting into their old ski wear. As far as I can see, there's only two solutions to the problem - buy bigger stuff or go on a diet. I'm particularly annoyed about the sizing problem. I mean clothes sizes should be the same whatever brand of clothes one buys. The bigger trousers were supposed to be an insurance policy in case I can't get comfortably into my old trousers before my holiday. I can actually put them on, and even bend, but I'd like a bit more free space in them. It would be terrible if they split while I was ski-ing

Tony,
I'm actually doing okay with the fitness regime, thanks, (I shall post something about it on the fitness thread), it's the fatness regime I'm having trouble with at the moment :D.
You're quite right about the way I should have checked out the size of D2B clothing. A size 14 is normally still too large for me (even at the moment!). My daughter's ski trousers are D2B and she said she could have told me they were a size smaller than they're supposed to be if I'd asked - so I was exceptionally stupid
I don't know what the D2B thermal base layer clothing is made of - I can't find it written anywhere, but it feels like some sort of polyester. I think I will go back to wearing my cotton T-shirts. At least I know I won't get itchy then.

Ally

Sm4sh,
As Tony said, the thing to do is to go into a shop and try on the different brands, to see how the different sizes fit on you. It is all very irritating. And sometimes it depends on the cut of the clothing, which is something you can't tell from looking at a photo on the internet. I suppose this is one of the major disadvantages of buying on the internet. I will now have to pay GBP3-50 to return the D2B trousers.

Ally

Smsh,
I don't really know, but my daughter got her D2B ski trousers in a surf shop a few years ago. I would say small sports shops and possibly even general clothing shops and very large general stores. I think the specialist large sports shops might be full of the more expensive makes like North Face and Helly Hansen. You can pay GBP400 for a pay of ski trousers if you like, in one of these shops

As others have said, they also sell cheap ski stuff in Lidl and Aldi and TKMax, but you just have to be lucky and buy when you see it, because you never know what they're going to stock next.

Ally

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

I'd suggest if you are going to buy D2B skiwear and pay ITRO GBP90 for a jacket, you might as well pay a little more and invest in something mid range like North Face, as not only are they better made and higher quality, but they look a lot better too.
Blacks currently have some good deals on some North Face stuff.
I paid GBP75 for North Face sallopettes from the USA, retail over here was GBP150 for the same pair so thats half price, and the fit, comfort and style are top drawer.
I also paid GBP30 for a brand new pair of ladies North Face sallopettes off of that Ebay  because the daft woman who bought them got the wrong size and couldnt get a refund as she left them too long, so wanted to get rid of them. GBP130 retail new.
You really do need to spend some time on the net and you will come across some really good deals.
Buying new stuff like D2B from a shop to me is like going out and buying a new Ford Fiesta, you just wouldn't.

Re:Secret Sale.com ski wear sale

TK Maxx buys in big bundles of remaindered (ie they did not sell) clothes. So delivery is lumpy - feast one minute, famine the next. But it;s now online too so all that checking if they'd had stuff delivered is a bit of the thing of the past - even tho you will find one or two things in branches that are not on the web.

Re base layers - 90% are made from polyester as it gets moisture away from the body ('wicking'), and dries quickly. Merino is the answer, but is quite expensive - that said, Decathlon now stocks merino base layers. It's a good investment as they don't wear out for the average skier; I've had the same HH merino base layers for four years - four years x 2/3 ski trips a year = just a few weeks of wear per item, less than your normal smalls I bet!

Re 'is D2B a good brand' etc - probably as good as they need to be. Dunno about skiwear, but I feel it;s highly likely the same factory in Taiwan or PRC make skiwear for lots of brands... bear in mind that some Armani suits are made in the same place as M&S suits.

I think the answer is end-of-season sales - get what you want at half price. My Eider Specialist jacket was such a purchase, and my Fischer Soma Progressor boots. Prior to that I was wearing a North Face waterproff jacket with a zip-out fleece - which was fine, even if TNF zips are a bit hinky.

I think what Sm4sh wanted to do, was to go to a shop that sold D2B stuff, check their sizes, and then buy it on the internet in their current up to 60& off sale, so that he wouldn't get caught out like I did with buying D2B trousers too small.

I bought my Animal ski trousers in a sale (in a 'proper' shop), half price, and I really like them (I just wish I hadn't been so gluttonous lately).

Trencher,
I am off to TK Maxx today to see what they've got, and then I'm going to see if I can buy myself a ski helmet.

Ally
