Wow. Seriously scary, though clearly very old footage - I would suspect 70s.

I was particularly impressed that they got the lift running properly the next day

Re:I found this.

Austrian tv gets these reports, of course. Often seems to be chlidren who fall out of chair lifts, one did in January, fortunately survived & recovered. Adults were sitting beside her and no one seemed to know what happened.

There are new lifts with automatic safety bars.

As mentioned elsewhere on the board, I was caught with a T-bar lift hooked under my coat. Scary.

The other thing you sometimes hear about is the chair lift being switched off at night with someone still on it. The only case I can remember now is in the old cult Austria TV drama, Piefke Saga. But I am told it happens in real life sometimes.

I looked on youtube for the Bridget Jones II ski scene, which starts with a rather tame chair lift fall. Only found it in Spanish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXGl5AiYLxQ If I could ski like that and not fall, I would think I was a pretty good skier..... if you don't agree, try it!

This happened for real on lift 45 in Les Arcs. It was many years ago now, but at the end of the operating time, typically the staff take the chair number, watch that chair round the circuit twice, then switch off the lift. No-one saw someone get on the lift. It's a very exposed lift at Arc 2000, and the passenger was found dead next morning when the lift was switched on, still in the chair. The lift staff there, were very strict about folks getting late lifts after that.

Re:I found this.

A friend of mine got left on a chair lift with a friend, when the lifties were told to shut the lift down because there were no people using it (it was an extremely cold day). He and his friend were stuck for an hour just down wind of a snow canon until someone saw them. They dropped their boards to the ground, so they could huddle better. When someone eventually saw them, they were covered in ice from the canon. No permanent damage luckily.

Sm4sh,
I rather think Trencher meant they shut the lift early because of the cold weather and there was no-one using it (they thought ...). When I was in Val Thorens they shut one of the chair lifts in the morning because they said it was too cold to go up in it, but I can't remember what temperature they said it was.

I guess a mobile phone, or a CB radio would come in handy in these circumstances.

Ally

have just googled the film. people stuck for a week on a chair lift not just over night!! i might have to look out for that. dont see how they could make a film about 3 people stuck in a chair lift though. sounds like it could be abit boring, although the trailer looks intresting

Re:I found this.

In December, whilst riding the ski circus for a week, I got caught late getting back from Leogang to Saalbach because they had put temp signs up signalling the way back for late skiers, some pillock had obviously tampererd with the sign and I rode the run twice back to the wrong place. The 3rd time I ignored it in the twylight and followed my nose to end up at the correct lift to the top allowing a 7km run back, 15 mins after it closed. I pleaded with the operator to get it going which he did, but after 3 mins it stopped for over 20 mins. I was maybe 50ft from the ground and started worrying. I had given away my map to someone earlier and had no numbers! Fortunately it got going again and I was greeted at the top by 5 personell. I can only thank the guy I dealt with for having the peAce of mind he did.

Turned into my biggest day riding, 80km and huge vertical. Also the only day that Jagermeister has ever tasted good ;)

Tino,
You mean, you didn't have the emergency numbers they put on the piste map?

I was thinking about this myself the other day. For the 3 valleys area they have a different emergency number for each area, which is very confusing. It's not like one just phones 999 wherever one is. I guess it must be because it's a local service in France, not a national one. So I was thinking I need to program the numbers into my phone before I go on holiday.

Ally

it's 112 all over Europe, anywhere in the world using a GSM phone and most other countries

it's not worth remembering local numbers and they may not always work, you can use 112 when your phone is not allowed to make any other calls when it's showing "emergency calls only" on the screen.

Sm4sh,
112 is supposed to work across Europe, and not just in countries belonging to the EU, plus a few other countries like Israel, whereas 999 works only in the UK and a few other countries like Ireland.

http://www.sos112.info/

http://www.112foundation.eu/view/en/vertical/the_112/when_to_call_112.html

However, I did read somewhere that certain mobile phones will put through 999 calls when you are in other countries, although I don't know how it works or even if it's true.

And I rather think that 112 is supposed to work even if your phone is locked (or has no SIM card), and try and find another network if your own has no signal (query whether the 999 and 112 mobile roaming service is working yet in the U.K.), and presumably will work even if you have no credit. They are also supposed to be able to locate you from your 112 mobile call, in case you don't know precisely where you are.

However, it is only meant to be used for life-threatening emergencies (which I reckon would include being left on a chair lift 50 feet up in the air potentially for the whole night).

I think we should all program 112 into our mobiles. I have :D

Thanks Ise, I hadn't heard of it before you told us.

Ally

Re:I found this.

For anoraks there is a detailed wikipedia article about emergency numbers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_telephone_number

The question arises whether the international 112 gets answered as quickly as the numbers used by locals, eg. in Austria police 133, ambulance 144. If they have to use English-speaking operators, maybe not?

More relevant;y, according to Wikipedia Austria has a distnict number for Alpine rescue 140. I'll remember that....

Innsbrucker,
I may be wrong, but I rather think that the 112 number is likely to be answered more quickly than the local emergency numbers because it has priority. And it also has the other advantages already mentioned, like being able to look for another network to gain a signal, possibly being able to locate you, and working even in a phone without a SIM card etc.

I think the 112 call is automatically put through to the emergency services appropriate for that area, so that if, for example, Sm4sh was to phone 112 in Bulgaria he wouldn't get put through to Manchester. I don't know how they cope with the language issue, except that I guess the operators must speak the main languages - like English, French, Spanish and German as well as their own language.

The correct local emergency mountain rescue number for Courchevel, for example, is 04 79 08 99 00, which is a pretty long number, and there are different numbers for Meribel, Val Thorens etc. So I have programmed 112 into my phone under 'Rescue' and if I need it I will try it out (hopefully I won't need to). Should I have need to use the number, and I survive the incident, I will post a message about it when I get back :D :D

Ally

Re:I found this.

I have the local numbers on my mobile just in case of any accidents or emergencys, then its just a matter of remembering which area we are in and dialing ASAP,Fortuneatley I have only had to use it once in St G. and they were there in 15mins, which can seem like a long time when you got a youngster in the party laying in the snow :( but I will put 112 in as well, can never have enough saftey ) O/H is down in my mobile as ICE( In case of Emergency) which wouldn't be much good if I needed rescuing )
