Serre Chevalier

I plan to be at Serre Chevaler at April 3rd-April 9th.
What are the chances that we will be skiing? Any snow that time of the year?

Also, plan to book at Best Western at Chantemerle. Anybody knows whether it is well located? How far from the lifts?

thanks everybody,
costas

Re:Serre Chevalier

I wouldn't worry about not having snow, Serre ch is fairly snow sure. Away they have nearly 500 snow cannons keeping it topped up

I stayed in Chantemerle. Not sure where your hotel is, but the town is fairly small, so it can only be a short walk away. 3 lifts take off from Chantemerle, a cabin lift, an old 4 person bubble lift, and a modern 6 person chair lift. Can be a bit of a queue first thing but never more than 10 minutes.

Re:Serre Chevalier

There had better be snow then, as I am going for Easter weekend, skiing 3rd 4th and 5th.
The lifts take you high up so most skiing is at plus 2000m so should be ok.

Re:Serre Chevalier

Thank you guys.
ultancav, would you recommend any other village with better access to the slopes of Serre ch or maybe high enough to be ski in-ski out in April (if such a place exists)?
costas

Re:Serre Chevalier

Chantemerle and Villeneuve have probably the best access to the slopes. All the villages are ski-in, ski-out. But I don't know about Briancon, I never skied down far enough to see what it was like. In Chantemerle you can ski right into the village centre, even seen people skiing down the streets! Again I wounld't worry to much about lack of snow the 1st week of April at the bottom, Chantemerle is at 1350 metres, but if your that worried there is Hotel's marked on my piste map at mid-station Serre Ratier (which is above Chantemerle) and Village De Frejus (which looks to be in the middle of nowhere above Villeneuve) I don't know if you can stay in these places and I didn't see them when I was there. I also don't see the piont in staying in these places as there is nothing much up there at night and no roads up, so it's piontless looking into it I think.

Re:Serre Chevalier

I stopped in Villeneucve last March, and we skied off the mountain every day to resort level. Ok, the slope off was not the best until a fresh dump midweek, but they do keep them open as long as possible. If not, you can take the lifts back down.
Monetier is the highest of the villages, and the slopes come in to resort level here more than anyhwere else in the area.
I am going to Briancon in April so will be able to report back on what its like with lifts back into the town then.

Re:Serre Chevalier

Had a day at Serre Chevalier around April 16/17th in 2003.

We had to catch a gondola down to the village (I think Villeneuve) but up on the mountains snow was fantastic still.
