Aching feet....
I'm talking about the ache you get when you wear those horrible rented skiboots all day long. Especially if you're new to the sport. As my wife will be/is.

So...to plan in advance, I'm going to take a whole heap of 'remedies' which will enable her to get through a week of skiing.

I've read that simple things like ibuprofen gel works well. I was also thinking deep heat or ralgex.

What else can be recommended, out of experience?

Cheers....

Coop

Re:Aching feet....

Buy her some Superfeet inners, and take out the rental boot insoles, and replace with hers.. This will give her feet some support. Don't forget to change them back when you hand the boots in!

Re:Aching feet....

Sound advice.
Also, make sure that the rental boots they give you are this seasons new models. My mates GF rented beginner boots in ADH and got a nice shiny pair of Head boots with lovely fluffy linings, had hardly been worn at all.
I guess its not always the case when you rent, but you are quite entitled to reject the rubbish they might throw at you.
I'd insist on new ones, even if it means paying a few quid more, as the comfort will be worth it.
Remember she only wants quite soft boots as a beginner, 70-80 max flex I would have thought. I am sure all rental shops carry new boots with those kind of flex.

Re:Aching feet....

Coop we went to Niederau last year and we all hired boots and skis via skiset and got them from the Margreiter hire shop which is just down from the gondola. They are really helpful in that shop and I was quite surprised at how good the rental boots were. None of us had any problems with the ski boots like aches or anything, the only complaint I had was my burning feet which had nothing to do with the hire boots, but that is another story lol.

Re:Aching feet....

One thing I found useful when I was new to skiing and the associated aches and pains, was to wear shoes with 1 to 2 inch (stack not stilettos!) heels for wearing in the evening around the hotel/chalet. It meant I could walk around and up and downstairs with some dignity ) I am making this suggestion for your wife of course, but having seen your taste in skiwear, you may be interested as well :D

Re:Aching feet....

Bandit has got it absolutely right - but don't get those expensive orthotics specially moulded for her feet. The pressure in turning and stopping flattens the arches onto the hard instep of the orthotic - result, aching feet!

Re:Aching feet....

Boot fitting is paramount it can really effect your experience of this great sport if you have badly fitted boots. check for hot spots on the feet this can effect you by giving the feet blisters. take 2 pair of socks when you go to fit one thick pair and one thin pair. Enjoy !!!!!

Welcome to J2ski :D As it happens, I do have Superfeet Full Kork insoles moulded and prepared by fellow J2skier CEM. :D
What suits me, won't suit everyone though, and it's best to start with an inexpensive footbed to improve the comfort of rental boots.

Coop,
Why don't you just pay extra and get good quality beginner boots for her? We've just booked hire boots from Intersport, and they give you three price options and then 3 ability options for each price option on skis and boots. I would guess that more expensive boots means more comfortable ones and less pain :D

Ally

It's a sad fact that even really expensive boots have standard footbeds that have the consistency of Play-Doh. I have more supportive house slippers. Still, if they cost more then they must by definition, be better quality. :D
