For those flying out this weekend....

best of luck to us all.
Conditions in the UK are set to be testing at best, and tonight the M11 is partially closed due to heavy snow so those heading to Stansted look out.
Gatwick is due snow tomorrow too, and European airports are closed or possibly might close if things dont improve. Its going to be a testing day, but hopefully an epic week. The snow forecast in the UK on Sunday is serious too, be careful.

The end of the 10 day forecast just now is calling for warmth and rain which can only be a good thing because I fly out in 2 weeks. Never thought I would be hoping for warm weather in winter :shock:

Looks like I'm the first victim. Flight to Chambery cancelled due to adverse weather there when we were about to board. Flight delayed an hour and then cancelled as airport has night restriction on flights.

Think I'll go sledging tomorrow!

Out of curiosity, which flight were you supposed to be on, and from where? And have they guaranteed you a seat on a replacement flight tomorrow? Was the sledging a joke? Surely you're still going out there?

It was Jet2 Newcastle to Chambery. Was due to land around 4 but the airport only operates in daylight so had to be cancelled today.

It's supposedly going tomorrow at 7am but we can't get to the airport at 5am. The Metro isn't running at that time and the roads here are really bad - if it snows again which it looks like doing, the roads won't be passable at the time for a taxi.

It may have been possible to go but it's really tricky so we've decided we'll get our refund and maybe try again later in the season.

To be fair to Jet2 they've done the best thing in the circumstances, getting the flight out early so people should get tomorrow afternoon in, just unfortunate how much snow there is here for us.

You poor things - it must be bad out there to cancel your flight so the transfer would not have been too good either. You have already lost a day so you have probably done the right thing if you are able to take the holiday another time. You could always get down to Weardale tomorrow!!

I'm really, really sorry you've missed your holiday. I hope you get another one later on.

The British weather forecast is pretty bad for the next week or so. I'm getting pretty worried about it, especially as they say there might be blizzards. And people here have been panic food buying in case we get totally snowed in. Living in the country is no joke when you get snowed in.

They did say they were all going out for a drink when they arrived, so I expect they did, and they've all collapsed into bed now.

Maybe they'll let us know tomorrow how many of them got there okay, and what the conditions are like.

Chambery also it seems. The flight from Newcastle that was rearranged for 07.30 is still at Newcastle with an update at 11.00.

I'd be so diasppointed if i'd been up at 4am and spent a fortune on a taxi and still not know if i was going anywhere!

Might try again in April.

Absolute nightmare!!...We arrived in ADH 2 days late, now seem to be stuck here airports closed everywhere.

Tony and his party have not arrived yet, were diverted to Geneva and put into a hotel for the night. All their luggage is missing. He is currently in a taxi on way to ADH and not very happy at all!

Clairebo is still stuck at Luton, was on plane for 2 hours then tqken off again§

On a slightly brighter note the powder here is fab and its blue skies.

What an amazing journey, just to get out there :shock: Poor Claire!

I can just imagine what Tony is saying about them losing his luggage and missing a day's ski-ing! Maybe it's not just Britain that's having trouble with this snowy weather.

That's why I was saying that I hoped they'd postpone your interviews, because I was a bit worried you might not get back in time.

There has been quite a bit of talk on the news about my particular snow worry - that the AS exams start on Monday and I might not be able to get my daughter in to town for them because of the snow. I have fixed that problem by getting my neighbour to take her in now, in their 4x4 (because our road is too snowy and icy for my car), and she's staying with a friend who lives right next to the school. The school says they will go ahead with the exams, whatever the weather.

It's snowing here now, and the weather forecast says light snow today, tomorrow, and then heavy snow and blizzards for Tuesday.

Tony and Mrs Tony had brand new skis with them. I hope all their luggage arrives! This is the 1st outing for the Neo's!

I just found out that my friend is still stuck at the uk airport, has been put in a hotel last night and now has been promoised that the plane will leave today @ 4.00pm but rerouted to grenoble!

I hope they hire some skis while they are waiting for their own to turn up, unlike whoever it was who kept waiting for their missing baggage and lost several days of ski-ing.

If they hire the top quality skis they should be okay, and it will be interesting to hear what Tony thinks of them, compared with his own. I really hope the missing skis do turn up though, it would be awful if they were permanently lost.

I don't know what they can do about the rest of their clothes though, other than buy more. I don't suppose they hire out ski jackets and salopettes (let alone underwear and shirts etc.!), and I shouldn't think Tony was wearing his ski jacket on the journey because he doesn't approve of doing that.

Most insurance policies will allow purchases of essential kit if your bags are delayed. That could well include ski clobber.

I don't remember any shops like that in Val Thorens. They were all selling touristy souvenir stuff like clocks and plates or else ski gear.

We are going by train and even though the service has been disrupted the Disney and Ski services are still running, lets hope it stays that way!

We came back from GVA yesterday evening - transfers were fine, but just under a 3 hour delay on the flight. There were quite a few cancellations and loads of delays all over the place.
Our flight to Bournemouth was due to leave at 1705, was initially put back to 1725 then 1750.
We were called to the gate at 1735, and loaded onto the bus to the plane but went nowhere for 20 minutes, before proceeding to the furthest point of the airport to find our plane. We boarded only to be told that the plane needed de-icing (for which there was a queue) and the runway had been closed. We took off at 1955 in the end!
The plane was heading back to GVA but with no idea whether they'd get out again.
Last Saturday there were baggage handling strikes at GVA which also caused fun and games.

No, I haven't heard what happened to Sami and his OH.

I checked on what I thought were both his flights, his original and his secondary one. As far as I could see, his original Ryanair one was cancelled, so he should get his money back, and then the new flight said it was delayed by an hour and a half, and when I looked again it must have taken off and landed because it wasn't on the list of flights waiting to go or still in the air.

But I have no idea what happened after he landed, and whether he got transfers or not. I expect he will let us know, at some point. I hope he's not snowed in on the road somewhere in a bus, or stuck in a hotel in Geneva or somewhere.

Edit - Ise, you wear lycra underpants? really? Me, I always stick to cotton :D

Tumble dryers are destroying the planet :) cotton doesn't dry too well, that's really the point and why people say "cotton kills", lycra does which is why you get running gear made from it. Much better on expeditions where you're washing your stuff in a stream and drying it on the side of the tent.

Great news that Sami and his OH have arrived safely. There is a report in a Dutch paper today that 1000 travellers spent last night in Lyon airport. Chamonet says 800, of which 500 were British. It was also claimed in the newspaper that Lyon turned around arriving planes back to their origin. I'm thinking that Sami was pretty fortunate to be travelling independently, and able to make their own arrangements.

Well it looks like many people have had an adventure doesn't it! I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I took the refund at the first opportunity when I saw the problems, but a disastrous coast-to-coast bike ride involving cycling until 2am and sleeping by the side of the road taught me to bail-out at the first sign of trouble.

Man this weather has been chaos, fortunately it was not skiing related in my case but it took me 16 hours to get home From Glasgow on Sunday!! Had a lovely few hours in Copenhagen paying nearly 9 EUR for a pint of Carlsberg :shock: However they say eerything happens for a reason and all I can say is I am very pleased it did happen :D

Thoughts going out to those who have had valuable ski days robbed by the total breakdown of lowland Eurpoe in the face of a few inches of snow. Makes me realise how lucky I am to live where I do and being able to use trains rather than planes to go riding.

Was re-routed there as Heathrow cancelled all the Frankfurt flights. I love Copenhagen though, wouldn't mind a visit there again sometime soon. I'll give you a shout if I do!
