Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

My daughter and I are going skiing for the first time at the end of January and we don't want to spend a fortune on ski wear. There are some very reasonable deals on ski clothing packages, ie jacket, pants, gloves and under layer but is this false economy? Any advice would be appreciated.

HI and welcome...I am sure you will enjoy your holiday and my advice is look at what you might wear again ...for instance..jackets which you would wear at home also gloves and underwear ..these you can at least get some more use out of if you don't go again but trousers ..don't buy expensive ones as you might not use them..try TKMax x ...they have some cheap gear in ...there is a thread up at the moment...enjoy your holiday

Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

With the UK currently suffering under a blanket of snow its probably worth buying, and as already suggested TK Maxx have decent kit at reasonable prices, although if you don't want to fork out too much (you may hate skiing, but I very much doubt it), there are places to hire kit (apart from thermals / socks - eeew) if you wanted to get decent kit just for a week - for example http://www.ski-west-skiwear.co.uk/Hire.htm or just google ski wear hire.
Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

Hi Pauline, My wife and i are off on our first ski trip in 2 weeks and we've had some great advice from many of the regulars on here (my thanks to them all again)

We've been to TK Maxx this week and it is a good bet for value stuff it seems. The trespass gear seems the cheapest and looks/feels quality too. i just got jacket and sallopets(i'm sure i'm spelling that different each time i post a message! lol) for GBP50

My advice would be (not that i feel in any way wualified to offer it!) try it all on in their fitting rooms, buy it, try it on at home...you've got 14 days to take it all back anyway. The only problem we've found is we're both a little bit between sizes and the womens stuff is mostly sized just S,M,L etc and not 10,12,14 though there are some sized in the numbers so we've have struggled to find what feels like a really good fit.

Good luck, hope you enjoy your holiday

Whilst I endorse totally using TK, we have no idea what kind of a "package" the original poster has been offered.
Perhaps they could fill us in first?

Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

We saw some 'package deals' in a local sports shop and the kids deals were great value. Something like 55 quid for jacket, sallos, thermals, hat, gloves and socks. Great value as they probably need new clothes every year as they outgrow them so quick.

Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

Thank you all for the really helpful replies. The ski wear package I have seen is on the Ski & Trek website, Trespass or Dare2b are the manufacturers. Some of the packages are currently half price and range between GBP99 to about GBP50. They include as a minimum jacket and ski pants but some also include gloves and a base layer. It seems like good value but I am not familiar with the manufacturer and want to make sure that we are warm enough (praying there will be lots of snow). I will head to TK tomorrow.

Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

Depending on where you are going, January is generally fairly cold. I would count on needing at least: thermals (top and bottom); a mid layer and jacket/sallos. Gloves/Hat are essential and a Buff-type-thing might come in handy too. Remember and price up the 'packages' on a different website to see if you are actually getting good value for money.

Re:Is buying a ski clothing package good value or not?

Answering your original question, no. A package is probably not the best option. The UK is currently the cheapest country in Europe for ski wear, you just need to know where to look.

As others have said, TK.MAXX is without a doubt your best bet for trousers, tube socks and jackets. I'd use Primark for thermals, and I just picked up a pair of Airwalk gloves rrp-GBP40 from sports world (formerly 'Sport and Soccer') for GBP9.99 this afternoon! Sports world are also very good for hats and ruck-sacks...

Do not buy tube socks, they will just lead to discomfort. Socks should be foot-shaped.

Everyone goes on about this, but I have worn tube socks since I re-started ski-ing 7 years ago, without any sort of discomfort. However, Father Christmas has very kindly brought me some very expensive heeled merino wool ski socks and I am going to see if I can notice the difference when I'm ski-ing.

Ally

That is because in most rental boots there is enough space for 5 pairs of tube socks

Hmmmm .... I haven't actually tried wearing more than one pair of tube socks in my rental boots.

Oh well, it will be something to try out on our next ski holiday. My daughter will still be wearing tube socks (because Father Christmas didn't buy her any new ones) and I will tell her that my friend Pablo, who is a qualified ski instructor, assures me that there will be enough room in her hired boots for 5 pairs of tube socks

I will let you know what happens ...

Ally
