Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

Went over on my ankle in the first half hour of 2010 :( Thought I had just sprained it but the x ray revealed otherwise. Have got another ski(?) holiday booked on Feb 13th - what do you think my chances are? Could not get to the Fracture clinic yesterday due to the snow so not been able to ask the orthopeadic surgeon - I know Dave Mac's wife had a similar experience last year but I can't find the thread.

Thought I was being sensible wearing boots with a wedge heel in the ice (have done so on holiday before) but now wish I had worn flatties with crampons!!

Fed up with being on crutches and everything taking so long to do but then I think about the people for whom this is a permanent state like a boy I teach who lost his leg to cancer.

Take care out there fellow Jet 2 Skiers )

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

That was really bad luck!

I would think you have a fairly good chance of ski-ing on it by the middle of Feb, just going by the general rule that it takes about 6 weeks for a break to heal, as long as there aren't any complications.

Ally

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

That is pretty unfortunate, PSC. Hope you can get things sorted as quickly as possible.

The usual plaster cast imobilisation seems to be around 6 weeks, but I guess this rather depends on the nature and extent of the injury. Then you are likely to need some weeks of physio.

My OH was skiing after about three and a half weeks after the cast was removed, albeit, she put up with a deal of pain. (Soon sorted with appropriate administrations of gluwein!)

However, all injuies, and repairs are different. It is more important to get the injury fixed properly.

Good Luck!

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

I broke the 5th metatarsal on my right foot riding a motorcycle when I was eighteen. With no money coming in, I had them take the cast off after eight days, and went back to work as an apprentice electrician.
Working on ladders was a bit painful, but otherwise I don't remember it being too bad. Maybe it was just being young, and as Dave says, everyone and their injuries are different.

The two toes, I broke at the same time caused the most pain. I think the Docs made me suffer while resetting them, because they didn't like motorcycle accidents.

Trencher

I quite agree, afterall, a tightly done up ski boot has to be as good as a cast

PS sorry to hear the news, I hope it gets better fully and swiftly.

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

Good news - after visiting the Fracture clinic yesterday I have now been given a boot which I can walk in which means I am much more mobile than on the crutches. He wiggled my foot around a lot and there was very little pain so he thinks it is healing well. I knew it was a good idea to borrow Wayne's oxygen tent!

I asked the ortho guy about skiing in Feb and he seems to think it will be ok - for the reasons stated by Wickers & Far Queue that the ski boot will support it - he will let me know for certain in two weeks time when I go back and hopefully will be boot free :D

Thanks for the tip about the Gluwein Dave Mac - I will be sure to take that one up!

A very bored PSC

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

normally a fracture takes 4 weeks sometimes a bit longer like 6 weeks but im sure you'll be fine for youre skiing holiday + skiboots are hard so they are probably even better than normal shoes ;)

Re:Broken 5th Metatarsal - How long before I will be able to ski?

good news

I had some strange unexplained problem with my big toe one year and was really worried about skiing. As soon as I put my boots on, what with the moulding and the hard shell, the problem was completely forgotten about. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for your messages of support Ladies - I am walking on it fine now with what feels like a ski boot on it so skiing in 4 weeks should be ok

Lets hope that us jet2skiers start to have a run of "Good Luck" for the rest of the season!
